Clayton chairwoman defends dinners with union leader

School board members are fighting ouster in court

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Clayton County school board chairwoman Michelle Strong testified before a state judge today that she went to dinner with a teachers’ union leader and other board members, a practice questioned by the agency that is considering revoking Clayton’s accreditation.

Strong told Judge Michael Malihi of the Office of State Administrative Hearings that she was a member of the Metro Association of Classroom Educators for about two years, but withdrew this summer. Strong is a history teacher in Fulton County.

  • “That’s my right to be a member of a teachers’ organization,” Strong told the judge this afternoon.

Strong and three fellow board members are before the judge today to address allegations that they violated state laws when they put the district’s accreditation at risk. If found to have violated any laws, Gov. Sonny Perdue can remove the board members.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools will decide by Sept. 1 if Clayton schools remain accredited.

SACS cited the board for a string of unethical behavior, including negative outside influences by teachers’ unions. An audit by an outside consultant also said that the Metro Association of Classroom Educators influenced board members to get unqualified people hired in Clayton schools.

There is no evidence that Strong participated in those practices.

Strong testified today that she had dinner with John Trotter, the chairman of Metro Association, about five times in the past two years. Board members Norreese Haynes, the union’s executive director, and Rod Johnson sometimes attended the dinners, Strong testified. She couldn’t remember if any other board members were present.

The board removed Haynes in March after police found he didn’t live in Clayton County. Johnson resigned last week.

The dinners were paid for by Haynes or Trotter, Strong told the judge.

“I went to eat because I wasn’t paying,” Strong told the judge. “Usually Mr. Haynes paid. He paid for dinner because he’s a man.”

Strong said she couldn’t remember if any board business was discussed.

“I’m telling you I’m not sure. There’s a lot going on,” Strong said.

Although she met with Trotter, Strong testified that she never allowed him to influence how she voted.

“I vote my conscience,” Strong testified. “I vote how I want to vote.”

Our children are our future and they are some children that are rude but they are some that want to learn and love going to school they do not deserve to lose the accreditation so they can go to the college of they choice whether they go to public or private schools.I am not knocking private schools but the children in public schools do not deserve to be pushish all schools have they problems but we do need to take our youth back and vote.BUT THEY DONOT DESERVE TO LOSE THE ACCREDITATION THE RIGHT TO GO TO ANY COLLEGE THEY WANT TO......

To be honest I feel that they did what they wanted to do because they were in power and they did not one time think about the children, parents, and teachers.I also feel that it is wrong to mess up one county and get a job at a nother county. And now all we can do is wait and pray that we donot lose our accreditation. And we have been sending our children to school for two weeks and in the back of our minds we are hoping and praying that we hold on to the accreditation. Its hard to believe that people can turn around and betray people that trust them.Because we did trust them and they use they power for they own personal gain. Now we have a week to found out if we are going to lose or hold on to the accreditation.PRAY KEEP THE FAITH.....

Most people in Clayton County showed how important this issue is to them by not showing up to the polls last month and again on the 5th of this month. I voted for a school board member and my daughter is attending a private school. Seems like I care more about the children of Clayton County than some of their parents. Thompson was right about the parents of public school children. If you don't vote, your complaints are unjustified. Let SACS take away the accreditation of the system, I bet you'll see a football field of parents lined up ready to complain. Where were you when you could have made a difference?

We understand the flaws within the ineffective School Board. Let the Judge rule! We really need help with the conduct within the schools. The children are ourt of control. The teacher's are trying to teach but with so much time spent on conduct and disrespect issues, what can be done. Administrators feel they can not send students home due to the clouds of loss of accreditation abounding. We need Police Officers walking the hallways. The disruptive students should be removed. There is the organized lesson plans for each subject and scheduled formats but how can you even get the work delivered. If you don'y knoe what is going on in these schools before you speak of the educators, check the obstacles they face. Go to your nearest school for a visit. Check on your child! Listen to the cursing, the playing, lack of attention not to mention bringing a pencil or paper to class. You feel sorry for the few and I mean few that are actually there to learn. You have so many with unstable home environments, emotional problems all in the mix. Could you handle the abuse instructors face each day? It's not because of a check, which happens to be questionably low but because this is a field they enjoy. Just take a little time and walk through your nearest school. A few people had a rude awakening when they had to vote during school session in February as they walked through the hallways and saw the wild and unruly behavior. Concentrate on what can be done to reach our children, the lost generation.

I am a member of the Atlanta Association of Educators (of GAE/NEA). We have a huge Teacher of the Year Banquet at Atlanta's swankiest hotels, honoring dozens of teachers. It is a beautiful affair. Many family members attend, as well as the Atlanta School Board of Education members. I don't believe that we charge them for their meals. What is the big deal about who eats with whom? Guess who's coming for dinner? That scary John Trotter! Yikes! Ms. Strong is now contaminated! Didn't Mark Elgart and the two State Liaisons, Bostic and Bryant, as well as Cobb County School Board attorney Glenn Brock all meet with the Clayton School Board members in executive session and discuss matters which are prohited by state law? Woe to you lawyers, SACS officials, hypocrites!

My daughter is attending private school and my husband and I still plan to be on the first thing smoking as soon as we can sell our house. We are currently paying school taxes into a system that we cannot utilize. What a rip off! 400 new teachers hired....not impressed. Seriously, who would actually voluntarily sign up to teach in a school system in danger of having its accreditation revoked? It's like accepting a job offer at FannieMae or Enron. The majority of Clayco's teachers are in their first year and many hold provisional certificates. The 400 new teachers hired are probably not the cream of the crop, just folk trying to get their student loans forgiven or laid off mortgage workers who fell into teaching as a last resort.
Education standards in Georgia are subpar and Clayco is at the bottom of the heap. A lot of things must change in this county before things actually get better. The elections are just the tip of the iceberg; however, Bell is still in power. We are looking at another encroaching wave of project dwellers that will relocate here when the City of Atlanta "sprays the Raid". All of these vacant foreclosed houses will still become Section 8 housing and the nightmare will continue. Sure, the police and DA will just lock them up and prosecute them faster but they will still move here.
This county is in dire need of an extreme makeover in order to attract quality educators and quality residents. Quality educators value their talent and the investment theyıve make to their profession. Quality educators desire employment in quality school systems with interested students, and active, interested parents. This county must attract a totally different demographic. Until that happens it wonıt matter who is in office.

Having observed this hearing first hand, for at least part of the day, I can say that I haven't seen in a long time such tap dancing around questions and selective memory for what was stated in a board meeting but no recollection at all of what happened in a "free dinner" that someone paid for because he was the man! I'll call it "So You Think I Can Dance, but I Don't Recall Talking To a Trotter"

I lived in Clayton during the decade and a half that it was a peaceful, prosperous, and diverse. I moved out of state and was shocked when I came back. It was unsafe, filled with massage parlors, gangs, and people motivated solely by race when entering the voting both. I heard the Afican-American neighbor of a friend on the phone in his driveway several years ago on election day saying "We are going to take over this county today." Now, he might have been talking about democrats, the Jaycees, or people who like brown shoes, but I doubt it. He got what he wanted and now there is a school board loaded with people who are too stupid to accept that they have failed in every possible manner, and too arrogant to step aside. While I was out of state, I watched white people vote for stupid white people in Mississippi - because they were white. They got similar results. Get a clue, and start asking if the people you are voting for have good sense and whether they want to be elected to serve, or because they couldn't get a real job. One hint: people who will go to lunch with anyone if the lunch is free, are probably leeches and/or idiots.

A bunch of worthless parasites, not fit to run a fruitstand moreless a school board.

Strong states ate with MACE just because the meal was free, no influence on her vote. She think people are really that stupid, that alone should get her thrown off.
