A Clayton County sheriff's employee is under investigation after local police found a stack of sensitive material inside her car during a traffic stop early Sunday morning, Clayton police said.

Police said convicted felon Brandyn Keith Mathis, 22, of Jonesboro was driving a Nissan Pathfinder owned by Genevieve Prejean, 36, of Riverdale.

Prejean works for Sheriff Victor Hill, Clayton Police Officer Sonja Sanchez said. Sanchez said Prejean was formerly an administrative assistant to Hill but police are not sure what her current assignment is.

Prejean told police she took home the stack of documents generated from Georgia Crime Information Center. Prejean told police she left the documents in a bag inside the car but officers found the papers inside her glove compartment, Sanchez said.

Neither Hill nor his spokesman returned a message for comment. Since January 2007, Hill has routinely declined to comment to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Sanchez said Prejean could be charged with unlawfully disseminating the sensitive materials, which contain names, phone numbers, dates of birth and Social Security numbers.

"Those documents are not supposed to even leave the building," Sanchez said. "She could be fined $50,000 and possibly receive up to 15 years in prison. The sheriff's office can also be sanctioned for allowing the documents out in public."

Police also found two handguns inside the SUV, she said.

Mathis was charged with speeding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and driving while unlicensed. His passenger, Jacques Cortez Smith, 19, of Jonesboro, told police his uncle is Prejean's boyfriend.

Smith was locked up on an outstanding probation violation warrant, Sanchez said. Smith has a criminal history in Clayton that includes arrests for drugs, weapons and assault, according to court records.

Both men are being held without bond in the Clayton County Jail.
