Lockhart was still breathing when rescue workers arrived at the Lockharts' home at 1605 Jodeco Road, but he died at Southern Regional Medical Center.

Janice Lockhart told police that her husband told her, "I'm tired of living like this," before shooting her and then himself. Police found a .45-caliber handgun on top of a trash can in the driveway.

Janice Lockhart wrote about her husband's May heart attack in the newsletter of their church, asking the congregation for prayers for her husband. She said he was depressed over his health and mounting medical bills.
