Little more than a year after police said he killed a Stockbridge motel maid, a former New Jersey bank executive was convicted of her murder and sentenced to life plus 60 years.

Alfonso Mason, 57, was convicted late Thursday afternoon of the March 8, 2007, murder of Cynthia Hyman, 49.

Hyman was a maid at the Suburban Lodge in Stockbridge where Mason had been staying.

The jury took less than two hours to return guilty verdicts against Mason, Clayton County District Attorney Jewel Scott said. Chief Judge Matthew O. Simmons sentenced Mason for Hyman's murder and the armed robbery, kidnapping and car-jacking of the motel's assistant manager.

After 12 years at the New Jersey Bank of Tokyo, Mason accepted a $70,000 severance package in 2000. He rented a 22-by-24-foot corner room March 8, 2006 at an extended stay motel off Ga. 138.

Motel workers said Mason took three days to move in, converting his humble surroundings into a five-star suite, complete with a 27-inch television, VCR, CD player and crystal drinking glasses.

Exactly a year later, police said he killed Hyman during a dispute. Mason picked up a knife from a kitchen counter and stabbed her five times in the stomach where she'd had surgery for Crohn's disease.

Mason left her there, on the floor between the bed and a wall, and went to the manager's office. He robbed the assistant manager and forced her into her car, making her drive aimlessly for an hour before letting her out and taking off with her car.

He surrendered March 24, 2007 to DeKalb County sheriff's deputies.
