Michigan has a Canton, just like Texas, Minnesota, Kansas, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and North Carolina.

None of those Cantons came up, though, when Stephen Colbert, host of "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, lauded the travel schedule of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

"I've got his schedule right here," Colbert said during Monday's show. "This week, Sen. McCain is rocking through Kennebunkport, Maine ... Rochester, New Hampshire ... Baltimore, Maryland. That means crabcakes! And Canton. And not the crappy Canton in Georgia. I'm talking about Canton, Ohio! Where he is hosting a ... finance reception."

The comment riled Georigia's Canton lovers, many of whom said so on Internet message boards.

It's unwarranted, the Georgia town's mayor says. Surely, Colbert has our Canton mixed up with another?

"He's never been here," Mayor Gene Hobgood says of the comedian. "He doesn't realize it's one of the fastest growing cities in the nation."

Colbert will get quite a tour if he stops by the so-called crappy Canton, Hobgood says. And for that other Canton, where they've got, apparently, non-crappy finance receptions?

"I have never been to Canton, Ohio," says Hobgood, a Cherokee County native. "No desire to go there."
