"It may take a couple of weeks before we have final numbers," Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine said.

The $40 million, released Tuesday evening by Oxendine's office, refers to insured losses, and could go up as more personal claims are filed.

To date, the number takes the yearly total of weather damage to about $415 million.

State officials could release the total uninsured losses for the May 20 numbers as early as Wednesday.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency will use the uninsured total to request federal relief funds.
