State and federal authorities Monday night arrested a Dahlonega man in connection with a large methamphetamine bust in Lumpkin County and in East Atlanta.
Saturday, the Appalachian Drug task force in Lumpkin discovered a storage space belonging to 61-year-old James C. Wiggins that contained what authorities called a “large amount” of the volatile and dangerous materials used to make the highly addictive “meth.”
Police gained a search warrant charging Wiggins with conspiracy to manufacture meth and tracked him down to an East Atlanta home in the 1300 block of Ormewood Avenue, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said.
Task force police officers, GBI agents and a DEA agent approached the house Monday evening, but Wiggins wasn’t home, authorities said.
“He rode up on a bicycle, and was arrested,” Bankhead said.
Wiggins gave agents consent to search the East Atlanta home, and more meth-making materials were found, Bankhead said.
DEA agents and their contractors were dressed in white hazardous materials outfits to protect them as they cleaned up and removed the drug-making chemicals, authorities said.
It took agents two days to clean up Wiggins’ storage facility in Lumpkin, Bankhead said. Wiggins was taken Monday back to Lumpkin to face the original charges.
More charges are pending, and the investigation — and clean-up of the Ormewood home will continue, Bankhead said.
