African monkeys arrive in Atlanta

A pair of African monkeys have arrived at Zoo Atlanta just in time to celebrate the Independence Day weekend.

George and Kinshasa, two Angolan colobus monkeys, are just getting settled in among the treetops of their new homes, according to zoo officials.

The black and white animals are no strangers to the South — both come to Georgia from Florida. George lived previously at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Kinshasa hails from Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.

Angolan colobus monkeys are native to the central African area and are not currently endangered.

The long-tailed animals begin life as all white colored creatures. But within three months of life, parts of their body — including their faces — turn to black.
