A 6-year-old kindergartener brought a loaded handgun to Heritage Elementary School on Monday and showed it to a classmate at lunch before it was taken away, Fulton County school officials said.

“We think he just found something at home that he wanted to show off to his friend,” school spokeswoman Susan Hale said. “I can’t stress enough, we don’t think he planned to harm anyone or himself and he didn’t threaten anyone. It was just a foolish thing for a child to do.”

The classmate told a staff member at the College Park school, and administrators immediately confronted the boy, taking away the gun.

The boy’s father was called to the school and met with administrators.

“They discussed what happened and where the gun might have been found,” Hale said. “We think it was found somewhere in the home.”

The boy will be out of school at least until he and his parents appear before a school system tribunal.
