Carter Center closes to revamp

This is the last weekend for visitors wanting to see the Carter presidential library and museum before the facility undergoes a

$10 million renovation.

Starting Monday, the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum will be closed. It will reopen Oct. 1 to coincide with Carter’s 85th birthday.

The facility was built in 1986 and is the only presidential library in the Southeast and one of only 13 around the country.

Except for the Oval Office replica, the museum will be entirely new. The 24,000-square-foot facility will be more interactive and will feature more personal insights from Carter’s presidency. It will also focus on his work through the Carter Center to fight poverty and disease and champion peace and democracy worldwide.

Among the high-tech features at the museum will be a virtual archive room. Visitors can select a box of documents created during a particular event and read on a computer screen thousands of pages of related documents, if they care to delve that deeply.

Near the exit will be a virtual map of the world, where visitors can see media about everything the Carter Center is doing around the world.
