An Atlanta City Council committee on Monday delayed issuing a subpoena for police records about the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old man by an officer last December.

The city’s citizen review board wants the records to determine whether Officer Carlos Figueroa acted properly when he shot robbery suspect Pierre George on Dec. 19 in northeast Atlanta.

George’s mother, Christine, tearfully asked the committee to approve the subpoena. Police officials cautioned against issuing the subpoena, saying it could compromise the department’s investigation.

The council committee voted 4-1 to hold issuing the subpoena so its public safety committee can look at ways to tighten up guidelines on what sort of information the board may obtain.
