Ex-Hawk’s charity group honored at White House

A charitable foundation started by former Atlanta Hawks player Shareef Abdur-Rahim will be honored at the White House Tuesday morning.

Rahim’s Future Foundation, which works with at-risk children ages 9 to 18 in south Fulton County, will be one of eight nonprofits at the conference sponsored by the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. The conference will highlight successful programs and provide examples to other organizations.

The Future Foundation offers free academic, sports and social development programs. It also builds working relationships with other organizations that helps all of them to be more effective in service. The director of the Future Foundation will give a presentation.

Abdur Rahim retired in October as a forward with the Sacramento Kings and works for the Kings as an assistant coach.
