The Atlanta Humane Society on Thursday announced a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a woman who allegedly threw a gray kitten out of the window of her moving car.

Also on Thursday, Fulton County Senior Assistant District Attorney Laura Jenssen volunteered to take on the case against the woman who tried to leave three cats at the Humane Society on June 21.

Elasha Germain, a specialist at the Humane Society, said that when told the facility was full and could not take any more animals, the red-haired woman in her mid-50s allegedly stormed out of building, violently shaking the crate holding the cats as she returned to her red Ford Focus.

When Germain told her she'd call police, the woman tossed the crate into her car and drove off.

The woman then threw a kitten out the window. The kitten has not been found. Neither has its owner.

Jenssen said Thursday she saw a newspaper report of the incident and decided to join the search for the woman.

A passionate dog and cat owner who handles all animal-related cases in Fulton County, Jenssen received the 2007 Humane Law Enforcement Award from the Humane Society of the United States for her work on enforcing animal protection laws.

Police were provided the woman's car tag number, but no arrest has been made, according to Officer Eric Schwartz, Atlanta police spokesman. He said a lieutenant had pulled the case file and handed it to a detective, but he did not state what progress had been made in the 19 days since the incident occurred.

"People who are abusive to animals are also dangerous to people. It's not something that should be ignored," said Kari Bogison, Humane Society spokeswoman.
