Saggy jeans may be a fashion trend, but a task force will announce today whether they should be in style on Atlanta's streets.

Councilman C.T. Martin introduced a bill in August banning clothes that expose underwear. The City Council created a citizens' task force to study the idea and make recommendations. The council will decide whether to accept the recommendations.

Martin says many adults find saggy pants distasteful, and he thinks young people who wear them are distracted from pursuing academic success.

Others argue any ban on such clothing violates freedom of expression and could lead to racial profiling by police of young African-American men, some of whom wear their pants like that.

The task force is scheduled to make its recommendations at a 6 p.m. meeting at Atlanta City Hall, 55 Trinity Ave. The meeting will be in Committee Room 1.
