A 21-year-old Atlanta man was convicted Tuesday of fatally shooting his girlfriend in the face on her 21st birthday while they argued in a car, prosecutors said.

A Fulton County Superior Court jury found Jamon Jackson guilty of murder, aggravated assault, arson and other charges in the death of Ashley Cierra White, according to the Disrict Attorney's Office.

Judge Henry Newkirk sentenced Jackson to life in prison plus 10 years.

The killing occurred on Aug. 10, 2005.

Jackson, then 18, was driving White's silver Honda Civic with White in the front passenger seat and a friend, Darnell Amaker, in the back seat, authorities said.

Amaker testified that Jackson pulled out a gun, then put it away. When the argument continued, Jackson pulled it out again and shot White.

Jackson drove the car — with White's body in it — to a remote spot off Camp Creek Parkway in College Park and abandoned it, authorities said. He later returned, drove the car to an abandoned home in College Park and set it on fire.
