At an abruptly rescheduled meeting Saturday, the Grady Memorial Hospital board is expected to approve the final version of documents to shift control of the hospital's budget and policy to a new nonprofit corporation.

The Grady board was set to meet Monday, but activists learned Thursday the meeting was switched to Saturday. The board is expected to approve a lease agreement shifting control of the hospital away from the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority as well as name the nonprofit board that will oversee the hospital's operations. The meeting will be at 3 p.m. in the Grady boardroom in the Atlanta hospital.

Activists who have fought the shift of power were upset about the meeting's move, saying the Grady board has a history of trying to do business out of the public eye.

"It's an obvious attempt to make it difficult for the public to be engaged," said Sen. Vincent Fort, a leader of the Grady Coalition, an advocacy group

Fulton Commission Chairman John Eaves said the board rescheduled the meeting to meet a deadline set in Fulton's resolution supporting the management shift. Grady board Chairwoman Pam Stephenson could not be reached for comment.
