A late-morning wreck on I-285 Wednesday left one motorist dead and shut down most southbound lanes of the westside Perimeter for several hours.

The multi-vehicle crash occurred about 10:50 a.m. just north of the I-20 interchange in Fulton County, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Larry Schnall said.

Schnall said southbound traffic on I-285 had slowed because of congestion when a tractor-trailer failed to stop, striking a van in the rear and pushing the van into the back of a second tractor-trailer. The second tractor-trailer then hit a car, Schnall said.

The driver of the van was killed in the collision, according to Schnall. That man's name was not immediately released.

No other injuries were reported.

The four right lanes of I-285 remained closed at 12:30 p.m., with traffic squeezing by in one left lane.

Schnall said it would likely be around 2 p.m. before the wreckage was cleared and the lanes reopened.
