Fulton, DeKalb commissioners weigh in on upcoming Grady vote

Fulton and DeKalb commissioners are expected in the next week or two to vote on transferring much of the power over Grady Memorial Hospital from the hospital's board to a private, nonprofit governing board. It is a move that diminishes the two counties' control over the massive charity hospital.

Here's how commissioners say they are leaning in their upcoming votes.

•Chairman John Eaves —In favor. "I am very confident we will vote to support it."

•Tom Lowe —In favor. "I never gave up power more willingly in my life."

•Emma Darnell —Undecided. "If there are no significant changes in the draft I have, I will vote no."

•Lynne Riley —Undecided. "I'm not worried about the power. I want to defend the tax dollars of Fulton County."

•Nancy Boxill —No response.

•Bill Edwards —No response. But he has said his vote will depend on promised funding. [A private donor has promised to give Grady $200 million for capital improvements.]

•Robb Pitts —No response.

DeKalb County Commissioners

•Jeff Rader —Undecided. "I don't think the board that we've appointed has been successful in operating that facility."

•Burrell Ellis —In Favor. "I'm going to vote in favor, and I think it will be approved."

•Kathie Gannon —Undecided. "I support the transition to a nonprofit. ... but we're working out little things."

•Lee May —Undecided. "I think we want to ensure that the dollars we send are spent responsibly."

• Larry Johnson —Undecided. "I do think it's a great first step towards obtaining additional funding for Grady, but I have some questions about the governance model."

•Elaine Boyer —Undecided. "We are going to take our time reviewing it and make sure this contract has all the appropriate accountability measures."

•Connie Stokes —Undecided. "I want to listen to everyone before I vote."

•DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones, who does not vote but has veto power over the board's decision —no response.
