School is on federal honor roll for service

Thanks in part to the Center for Civic Engagement, Oglethorpe University has been named to the U.S. President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the second year in a row.

The activities that earned the federal honor for the university included:

• The freshman class's volunteer efforts at PATH Academy.

• Participation in Hands on Atlanta Day, serving Centennial Place Elementary School, the Villages of East Lake and Rivers Alive.

• The men's basketball team received the John Swain Volunteer of the Year Award from the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta.

• The Center for Civic Engagement announced partnerships with Atlanta public schools.

• More than 70 students volunteered during the last week of their winter and spring breaks to provide support for the Gulf Coast region devastated by Hurricane Katrina, and over a long weekend soccer coach John Akin and five Oglethorpe players held a soccer camp in Edgar, La., for 60 children living in FEMA transitional trailer communities.

The honor roll is jointly sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, through its Learn and Serve America program, the U.S. Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.
