One of the Bluffton University baseball players critically injured in a bus crash a week ago has died, bringing the total of dead in the wreck to seven.

Pitcher Zach Arend, a freshman from Oakwood, Ohio, died about 6 a.m. Friday at Grady Memorial Hospital, said Denise Simpson, a spokeswoman for the hospital.

Arend was being treated for serious brain injuries, chest and abdominal injuries, a fractured pelvis and collapsed lungs.

Two other survivors remained hospitalized Friday at Grady, Simpson said.

She said Tim Berta, a senior from Ida, Mich., who is a student coach for the team, is in critical but stable condition.

William Grandlinard, a freshman from Bern, Ind., is in fair condition, Simpson said.

Kyle King, a freshman from Dover, Ohio, is in fair condition at Atlanta Medical Center.

The team's coach, James Grandey is in fair condition at Piedmont Hospital.

The charter bus carrying the team from Bluffton, Ohio, to Florida for a spring break tournament plunged off the Northside Drive overpass onto I-75 shortly after 5:30 a.m. on March 2.

The bus driver sped up the HOV exit to Northside Drive, then crashed over a concrete wall and back onto the interstate.

The driver, his wife, and four players died at the scene.

Federal investigators are examining the configuration of the HOV exit ramp, and whether the driver mistook the left-hand ramp to Northside Drive for the HOV through lane.

Survivors told investigators the bus was at "highway speed" as it crossed several lanes of traffic and crashed over the short concrete wall and through a fence before falling back onto the southbound lanes of the interstate.

On Thursday, investigators drove a bus up the ramp at much slower speeds at the precise time of the wreck in an apparent attempt to learn what the driver would have seen in the early-morning darkness.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board were also meeting this week with survivors who had returned to Ohio.

Funeral services were held earlier this week for players Scott Harmon, Tyler Williams and Cody Holp, and for bus driver Jerry Niemeyer and his wife, Jean Niemeyer. The funeral for player David Betts is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.
