Lauren Burk was a light in the lives of many.
"I can't figure out why someone would do that to her," said Tom Boardman, who attended Walton High School and Auburn University with the young Marietta woman.

"If you didn't have a smile on your face, she put one there."
There was overall relief at the news someone had been charged with fatally shooting the 18-year-old graduate of the east Cobb County high school. But questions still remained.
"I was glad they finally found someone," said another high school classmate, Jeff Suttler, 20. "It's still kind of a shock."
But that is not enough, said Suttler, who went to high school with Burk.
"They might know who did it. But there are no answers," he said.
A stream of mourners began filing into the Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta about an hour before the late Saturday afternoon memorial service.
Many of them had the young faces of someone in their late teens and early 20s. They came in pairs or with their parents for support.
Ellen Avin's daughter went to high school with Burk. Avin said she was worried about how the 18-year-old would deal in the next few weeks with the death of her friend, so the mother had already scheduled time with a therapist should it be needed.
"The randomness worries me," Avin said.
The service was closed to the media. Outside the church, some of the arriving mourners declined to talk about their slain friend. Others remembered her with fondness.
"She had something about her," Suttler said. "She was a friend to everyone."
A funeral for Burk is to be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Temple Kol Emeth in Marietta.
