Voters "want a choice," Barr told a gathering of about 40 journalists and supporters in a small room at the National Press Club.
"They believe that America has more and better to offer than what the current political situation is serving up to us," Barr said.
He said the federal government has "run amok fiscally," the presidency has grown too powerful, and individual freedoms have "fallen into disrepute."
Barr, an outspoken opponent of the Iraq war, said that as president he would begin bringing the troops home from that country and elsewhere around the globe.
He insisted he will not be a "spoiler" but said Republicans have urged him not to run out of concern that he will draw votes from Sen. John McCain, the presumed GOP nominee.
Barr said he is "confident" he can win the Libertarian nomination when the party holds its convention over Memorial Day weekend in Denver.
Barr, 59, quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its failure to shrink government and its willingness to scale back civil liberties in fighting terrorism.
He currently runs a lobbying and public affairs firm with offices in Atlanta and outside Washington.
The 2004 Libertarian presidential candidate, Michael Badnarik, took less than 1 percent of the vote, placing fourth behind President Bush, Democrat John Kerry and Independent Ralph Nader.

I would very much like to see Barr as President, but conservatives should remember what happened in 1992 when a third party candidate took enough of the vote to get a draft dodger elected. I voted for Ross Perro and we all had to look at slick willie for 8 years.

Barr might think about banging his head against a wall. At least he will feel better when he stops. On the other hand, think of the advantage to GA. At least it would get him out of here.

Barr is talking about we need change. Good he and his old talking head buddies can get into some other business besides D.C.
If the voters would look at this country as a large corporation which it basically is, you could put the presidency into perspective.
The office of the president is basically, the acting CEO. The big petroleum, power, communication and pharmacutical companies are the board of directors. The lawyers are the human resources dept. handling complaints. The elected Senators and Reps. are the union officials trying to gain favor for their constituents. Now lets see, who should we as the work force of the company, chose as our CEO at a time when we could use a Lee Iaococa. A woman, whom has rode her husbands coat tail to Washington. A junior union representative with limited experience or a veteran of both the military and DC that knows it time for changes. I would think a person who would consider anyone, other than the latter of the three, not very sharp when it comes to corporate matters. Go figure!

Finally an option besides the BIG GOVERNMENT Democrats and the BIG BROTHER of the Republicans
Barr is (like most Libertarians) for less federal government, low taxes and personal freedom.
This the America that I want. .
I also like his policy on Iraq. We have done our job, now lets get the Iraqis to take care of themselves. (not in 6 months, but within a year or so)
I would rather vote for Barr and have Obama win then vote for McCain and continue the Bush errors.

I love Bob's response to those who claim he will take votes away from McCain. Barr states, "If Senator McCain does not succeed in winning the presidency ... it will be because Senator McCain did not present, and his party did not present, a vision, an agenda, a platform and a series of programs that actually resonated positively with the American people." Well said Bob!

Anyone who thinks electing another Republican to the White House, given Bush's train wreck of an administration over the past 8 years, is a good idea clearly doesn't understand politics. Hello? Have you people been on another planet for the past 8 years? The thing about Georgia conservatives - there's not a critical thinker in the bunch. Reading the string of comments in this blog prove that point. Even more frightening, to me at least, is that they have no understanding or appreciation for the US Constitution. I'll give Bob Barr that much, but that's all I'll give him. This much I know - he's 10 times more of an intellectual than that yahoo in the White House right now.
Look, conservatives are told what to think, and they are clearly comfortable with that role. That is why Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh have been so popular for so long. I'm sorry, but "Voting for John McCain because he's a war hero" is not a good political argument. I wish I could ask the guy who said that face to face to tell me about John McCain's voting record. It would be a joy to stand there and watch his eyes glaze over.
The folks at the AJC who set up these blogs must have a great sense of humor.

I'm a former Republican. They have squandered our founding principles just as much as the democrats, if not more so. There's an article out today detailing our US Government is the biggest it has ever been. So, you Republicans who support McCain b/c he's the lesser of 2 evils, even though he's about the same as a democrat, you're just as responsible for the continued destruction of our country as the democrats are. As for me, it's Bob Barr or Chuck Baldwin (Constitution Party) for me. One of those two will bring our country back to where it was meant to be.

I guess Bob's wife told him he ought to run. SHE is the one with money and the influence. I am ashamed Bob Barr is a man and from Georgia.

Bob Barr is just plain scary and crazy.
He was a nut when he was in congress and he is I guess lonely for some attention. Let's see here McCain, Obama/Hillary/Nader/Barr. Jesse Ventura was right we should vote NONE OF THE ABOVE
