WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS STORY
Mickey Ruffalo, 57, of Woodstock loses 65 pounds
For The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday, May 08, 2009
Former weight: 245 pounds
Current weight: 180 pounds
Pounds lost: 65 pounds
Height: 6 feet
How long he’s kept it off: “I started in August 2007 and decided to lose the weight slowly,” he said. “I reached my current weight of 180 pounds about March 2009.”
Personal life: “I own a small manufacturing business located in Alpharetta,” he said. “I have two grown children and two grandchildren. I love to play golf.” He lives in Woodstock.
Turning point: “My life was being ruled by diabetes and high blood pressure; I felt terrible every day,” Ruffalo said. “I had dealt with the diabetes and high blood pressure for six years before I simply decided that I wanted to be around to enjoy my grandchildren as well as my favorite sport, golf.”
Diet plan: “My diet plan was something I developed that worked for me very well,” he said. Breakfast is juice, cereal and whole-wheat toast. Lunch is soup and gelatin or fruit. Dinner is fish, chicken or pork with vegetables and fruit. He drinks plenty of water and avoids soft drinks.
Exercise routine: “I made myself get serious about my daily gym workouts every day after work,” he said. “The first three months consisted of treadmill work only and 300 to 400 sit-ups a day.” He goes to the gym five to seven days a week and incorporates free weights.
Biggest challenge: “Making sure I stay away from the all-you-can-eat places; no more family-style eating routines,” he said. “Parties are the hardest thing to attend and stay away from all the munchies.”
How life has changed: “I went from a size 42 waist to 36,” he said. He no longer takes diabetes or high blood pressure medication. “A very good friend and neighbor of mine became my inspiration. It probably will save many years of my life and allow me to enjoy the things we take for granted every day. I have unlimited energy, no shortness of breath and I have a new lease on life. If I can do this anyone can.”
