What’s the Worst Food In the World?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
YUCK: Sea cucumber is sooooo gross
Photo: Becky Stein
In today’s Hotplate, I list the five foods I hate most in the world. What I really just can’t stand, even though dining critics are supposed to like everything, right?
Well, we don’t. I hate sea cucumber. It’s slimey and disgusting. And if I never eat a fried chicken liver again it will be a welcome change.
What foods do you hate most? Are there any foods that you’re ashamed to say you like (I love sugar-free Jell-O, but am scared to say it out loud)?

The worst food I ever tried was limberger cheese. I remember thinking that it tasted like what I imagined cement would taste like. It really is as bad as it is portrayed in cartoons!!

Boiled okra is creepy. I think I would vomit if ever forced to eat pickled pig’s feet or head cheese. I get grossed out by the chewy bits of jello which occur in regular jello when it was not adequately stirred during preparation.

MOVE OVER #1 (SEA CUCUMBER) - APPEARANTLY YOU HAVEN’T TRIED RAMBUTON (SIC?) - AN ASIAN SPECIALTY FRUIT WITH THE AROMA OF A BEACHED WHALE AFTER 4-5 DAYS IN THE HOT SUN AND A TEXTURE NOT UN-LIKE THAT SEA CUCUMBER. THIS FRUIT IS SO VILE THERE ARE SIGNS ALL OVER ASIA IN HOTELS THAT THE FRUIT IS NOT ALLOWED IN THE ROOMS! IF YOU DECIDE TO TRY IT BE SURE TO DO SOON YOUR DECK OR PATIO (PREFERABLY ON A WINDY DAY)..

I have something to add but it’s more of a “favorite guilty pleasure that turns out to be awful” kinda thing, and I’m certainly NOT ashamed to admit it!
Peanut butter. I love it. Most of my diet growing up consisted of peanut butter and although I don’t eat nearly as much now, I do love a good spoonful every now and then to help stave off hunger.
That said, the worst food SMELL for me is the smell from rinsing peanut butter off a spoon or knife. The hot water hits it and your nose fills with a smell that’s reminiscent of peanut butter, but has somehow been transformed by the hot water into something vile.
I can’t stand it. I’ll lick a knife clean and THEN wash it before I rinse peanut butter off it.
I guess I could admit to being a BIT shamed by my periodic taste for frozen chicken fingers. I keep a bag of Trader Joe’s ones in my freezer. But I understand your hesitance to admit such dalliances, Meridith … my friends who have seen me rail about how someone didn’t turn potatoes before they put them in the roasting pan generally think it’s crazy that I’ll eat frozen foods. But hey, nobody wants to cook all the time!
As far as cheese being the “worst” food, I couldn’t disagree more. The stinkier the better!

Robert falk: that Jell-O comment made me laugh out loud! Phar71: I’m waiting, too. Haven’t heard much of anything other than the date has been pushed — which isn’t unusual at all, even in a really good economy. I’ll dig around and post something if I hear.

The worst food for me … Liver Dumpling Soup. The smell of it cooking is repulsive, the taste and texture just as repulsive. Indescribably awful. My mother used to make it when I was growing up, and I had to hold my nose to swallow it. We grew up in a “you will eat every bit of food put in front of you” house.I would gag it down. Now, she hates it, too (after all those miserable times of making us eat it)! P. S. to Al Grennell … avoid typing in all Caps … it’s very difficult for most people to read!
