Where’s Your Favorite Indian Food?

In this week’s In Search of, I give my five fave Indian spots, in honor of Slumdog Millionaire’s 10 Oscar nods, of course. But a few readers have already emailed to ask: where’s great Indian food inside the perimeter?

Well, that’s a first. Usually, I’m getting knocked for never going outside the perimeter. But I’m scratching my head trying to come up with some spots, other than the ones I’ve already mentioned in the piece (Udipi and Royal Sweets are both ITP). There’s Bhojanic, which I know many of you love, but it’s never been a favorite of mine. Let me know of Indian restaurants — anywhere — that you love.

Zyka is so great for a quick low-key meal. They don’t even mind when my kids start to dance at the table!

Your review on Il Mulino is pretty close, but you do have to watch your check because they do “Assume” that you want everything and do not tell you they are charging you for everything. “Stop thief” could be the words heard in the valet stand!

We were actually at MGR Palace for dinner this past Saturday night (Valentine’s Day). Although the food was very tasty, the service was the absolute worst and, for that reason alone, we would never return. Sat and waited for close to half an hour before any food was ever brought out (despite the fact that we had ordered soup to start, which would’ve simply had to be ladled out). Had to repeatedly remind our waitress that we had not received anything to eat. Very disappointing.

Himalayas in Chamblee Plaza ITP on Peachtree Industrial. Best we’ve found. They warm up to you once you’ve been going for awhile, but service is always excellent and food consistent. Ask for Moise!

Raja-Peachtree Rd./Buckhead. Only because it’s close to my house, and easy to get to. Favorite Indian-Bombay Palace in NYC. They opened up a branch several years ago, on W.Paces Ferry Rd., but the Buckhead crowd turned their noses up at it. Sad!

My favorite is Madras Chettinaad, formerly known as the Bollywood Cafe, near Decatur. It’s off Lawrenceville Highway in the same strip mall as Madras Saravana Bhavan. I spoke with the owner and he said he was the former owner of the Saravana Bhavan, which could explain why Chettinaad is so good and why some say the quality at Saravana dropped off. For fans of Bollywood movies, you’ll be happy to know they still show the movies during dinner.
