TAURUS HAS CLOSED: The chopped salad was a favorite …

Photo: Charlotte B. Teagle/AJC

The AJC is reporting today what many of you already knew: Taurus, Gary Mennie’s first solo venture beyond his prolific career at Canoe, has closed. Read John Kessler’s brief.

Opened in 2005, this was a fine restaurant, with one of my favorite chopped salads on the planet, and some pretty good steaks for the price point. The space was visually interesting, and I always enjoyed the fact you had to take an elevator up to get to the dining room.

Mennie’s Atlanta pedigree is impressive, and it was his stewardship in Canoe’s kitchen that brought it to national attention pre-Olympics.

Mennie’s restaurant will be sorely missed, but I do believe we will see great things from him in the future. Like every other restaurant, it’s location, location, location, and the absolute glut of restaurants that opened in the immediate area of Taurus may have proved to be just too much.

Let no one forget the many charitable donations of both time, resources and money that Mennie has given to local organizations and we say a huge thank you to him for all of his hard work on behalf of those less fortunate.

One can only hope that the economy will eventually - sooner than later -recover and that our favorite local chefs/resteraunteurs will be back on the scene, not overshadowed by their counterparts from NYC who have chosen to make Atlanta their newest outpost.
