Dumplings?

This week’s In Search of explores Chinese in Atlanta but I’m hankering for dough of all sorts, especially dumplings.

Love Chef Lui’s, love Canton House’s sui mai — but are there any dumplings out there of the Eastern European nature? Pulmenis? Or do I have to settle for gnudi, which hit a bit of a craze last spring at local spots and is still going strong.

If you know of a great Eastern European dumpling house, or dumplings of other sorts, let me know.

Frank Ma’s on Briarcliff has soup dumplings that are TO DIE for!

Aunt Margaret’s. Perfection on a plate or in a bowl.

I second Deanna’s recommendation. The Soup Dumplings at Frank Ma’s are killer, as are the pot stickers and most anything else dumpling related on his menu. If you do go for the soup dumplings, here’s a trick: some of the wait staff does not understand English. In Chinese, the soup dumplings are called “Shalone Po.” If you order soup dumplings and get a funny look, ask for Shalone (rhymes with “alone”) Po, and you’ll be set.

Yen Jing on Buford Hwy makes some of the best boiled and panfried dumplings; I have never tried the steamed variety, but they seem to be popular with the regular clientele.

I’m Jewish and I make homemade dumpling-type things called “kneidlach” (which are also known as ‘matzoh balls’) which I serve in my chicken and turkey soups

I don’t know of any place in Atlanta that makes either pierogi or kreplach. My wife had a co worker who came from detroit. When she went back to visit family she alway brought back great fresh peirogi. I do however know of a very good pierogi restaurant in Warsaw, in the old city. doesn’t help much though, does it?

I use my grandmother’s and mother’s recipe for homemade chicken ‘n’ dumplings. They make you drool! I have given the recipe to friends up north, and their families went nutz over them. It’s something that every kid in our family begs for on Sunday for Sunday lunch/dinner. And the leftovers are so good. The longer they sit in the gravy, the better they are! That’s why I always make a soup pot full. I’d rather have them the second day than the first day.

Gizma, at 3435 Medlock Bridge Road, is a super tasty Polish restaurant. Their menu changes daily, depending on what’s fresh, but they usually have pirogi — very yum.

Opps, it’s Gimza, not Gizma. :)

What’s up with Frank Ma’s? Everyone raves about it online…but I went during the week and we were the only ones there. The soup dumplings…lacked soup. It all leaked out by the time it got to the table.

Doesn’t even COMPARE to Joe’s Shanghai in NYC.
