Buford Highway Crawl

HOW ‘BOUT A HOAGIE? Bhan mi thit at Lee’s Bakery on Buford…
Photo: Mikki K. Harris/AJC
It’s no secret that Buford Highway has become the corridor to all things culinary for Atlanta foodies. Today’s review takes a look a one of my favorites — Penang, a Malaysian wonder just south of Shallowford Road.
Others that have long been on my list are the Korean tofu soup house So Kong Dong, El Rincon (a Salvadorean pupusa house), Chinese dumplings at Chef Liu, the bhan mi thit at Lee’s bakery, the La Suprema Bakery behind Plaza Fiesta (there are many other locations in the area), the food court inside Plaza Fiesta, Mozart Bakery, and Rexall Grill. These are but a few.
Where’s your favorite place to eat on Buford Highway?

Great italian Bistro (can’t remember the name) at the corner of Buford Highway and Hamilton Mill…..a bit spendy, but worth every penny.
Althought it’s not the Buford Hwy you are referencing, it is still on Buford Hwy, just up in Buford……

Yen Jing, in the Korea Town shopping center across from Pine Tree plaza. Another really good one is the Chinese BBQ Corner a mile or so south of there. Yen Jing has the BEST sweet and sour pork in Atlanta!

Is there any place on Buford hwy -or anywhere in Atlanta for that matter- to get GOOD fish tacos? I mean like the ones sold by Pedro’s in downtown San Juan Capistrano, California, or Sara’s in Mission Beach San Diego. Please. Please tell me where to find something like that here!

A bit off Buford Hwy in the food court of that place in front of the Chinese community center…Stall just inside to the right has good Malay-Chinese food. More home style than Panang.
Canton house has pretty good dim-sum. Not like Canton but good. Ate there this morning.

You mean the one that always has the long line? That food court is one of the city’s best kept secrets. And I’ll second the Pho #1 notion- a true gem.
The selection of ethnic eateries this city has to offer is one of its great standout features, in my opinion.

Just last week, I was in a local Chinese resturant. We had had a few Kirins waiting for our table, and I had to go. On the way to the restroom, I must have wandered into the kitchen. Trying to find my way out, I walked right into a dry storage area and was about to turn and leave. I stopped and the chef going into the cooler did not see me. He went in and came out with, I swear this is true, a butchered dog, head and all still on the creature. Then, he saw me and my look of horror. He quickly set the dog down and offered me whatever I wanted to keep quiet. I whispered into his ear my demand and he smiled.
It tasted pretty good with the sweet sauce.

I wouldn’t be caught anywhere near a restaurant in Chambodia, not even with three restaurant inspectors watching as a meal was prepared, an FDA agent was present and the place had been fully hosed down with sulphuric acid and hot water by three fire trucks and a kid with a garden hose.
These places are prime targets for ICE and Baby Jesus only knows what training is provided or what the origin of the foodstuffs might be.

This “native american” nonsense needs to stop. At least as “code” for what used to be called “Indian,” that is, the bunch that the sainted Democrat Tom Jefferson referred to as “merciless savages” in the holy document known as the Declaration of Independence. But, I digress. If you were born here, on this soil (as I was), then that makes you a “native American.” And, not an immigrant. All you apaches, cherokees and iroquois need to get over it and stick to running your gambling establishments. BTW, I wouldn’t eat the cooking of ANYBODY on putrid Buford Highway.

Quoc Quong in Asian Square for the best banh mi; Chef Liu for leek pie, dumplings, and steamed buns; Co’m for grilled duck rolls; and the best taqueria I’ve found is about 1/4 mile from the intersection of Chamblee-Tucker and Buford Hwy—Los Rayos. The barbacoa and al pastor are fantastic

Okay, here goes: Mark, Joey and “Washington Redskin” — please go get a life
Everyone: Should NEVER have left out Mi Pilon — thanks for the reminder — haven’t been in a while
As for Taquerias — the best isn’t on Buford, it’s in Jonesboro — La Oaxquena Taqueria.

You were talking about where to get the best burgers in Atlanta…. Well, we’ve tried alot of them and the ones we like best are at Marlow’s Tavern. They give you 1/3 lb. of delicious juicy lean beef on a sesame bun, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a whole mess of the best French fries in town…all for $7.95. Where else can you get that??
