Who Needs Pillsbury? We’ve got Shorty’s
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
AT RIGHT: NOW that’s a pie: Rosa’s Pizza on Broad Street downtown makes the best pie in town.

As the Pillsbury Cook-Off gets off the ground today, it seems appropriate to announce a baking contest a little closer to home.
Shorty’s, the neighborhood pizza joint in Atlanta and Tucker, has announced their first “inaugural pizza design pro-am” contest.
Here’s a (short) list of the rules:
Anyone can enter as many times as they like.
Each entry costs a buck.
Bootlegging recipes from other pizza joints is okay. (This one really disturbs me in the originality department, but it’s not my contest.)
The pizza name must have street cred. (I’m not sure what they mean by this one, either — does this mean the pizza name should be recognizable, or that is should sound like a rapsta? Since all — or most — of Shorty’s pizzas are named after rock stars, maybe that’s what they mean.)
Write neatly. (This one cracks me up. But if they can’t read it, they can’t judge it.)
Max number of toppings allowed is five.
Pizzas are judged on name, originality, appearance, taste and here’s the best one — food cost. (So don’t go thinking this is the time to introduce that foie gras pizza you’ve been working on to the world.)
Competition begins now and ends on June 6 at midnight. Ten finalists will be announced on June 10. Final judging and awards will be given on Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m. at the Tucker location, 3701 Lawrenceville Highway, 770-414-6999. The prize? The winning pizza will be put on the menu at both Shorty’s locations.
More info? Call Bryan Wilson, 404-315-6262, or Brian Hogan, 404-285-7234.
So here’s the real question: Who makes the best slice in Atlanta? My vote, as I’ve stated, many, many times, goes to Rosa’s Pizza downtown. Second would be Floataway Cafe. Third - Baraonda in Midtown.

If in the Norcross area: Paizano’s.

Rosa’s has good crust and good sauce, but the mozzarella cheese is standard. Not bad, but not great. Of course, a higher grade of cheese would up the price and might cost Rosa’s customers. It is still, however, about the best pizza slice one can find in Atlanta. Also, the atmosphere and the people who work there are great. I do recommend it for people looking for something relatively quick and affordable downtown.
For a pizza pie, I like the variety of pies offered by Shorty’s. Good ingredients. My only complaint with them is the crust, which is droopy and adds nothing to the pizza.

Ugh, Rosa’s is re-warmed, and just not that good. Even Fellini’s is better.

I’ve always liked Fritti, but with Fritti you’re getting into gourmet-ish pizzas and that’s not really TRUE pizza.
Everybody’s Pizza in Va-Hi is always a winner for a slice of good, simple pizza.

The best pizza I have had was from Godfathers Pizza. I think GA they went out of business. Nothing better than a slice of Godfathers pizza and an extra cold beer.

There’s a place out on Veteran’s Memorial right at the Cobb/Fulton line called Pizza Bar. The crust is tasty and the toppings plentiful. And the staff is great - after a couple of visits, they remember you and any special requests you might have.

I like Rosa’s and Fritti the best in Atlanta (Elbow room in Buckhead is good too but not consistently).
Fritti is indeed authentic. They use Caputo Tipo 00 instead of baking flour which is the traditional ingredient for real Neopolitan pizza dough.

Don’t know if they sell it by the slice, but if you want GREAT thin NY-style pies, go to Giorgios on Defoors Ferry not far from Howell Mill. Usually not too crowded either. Almost always spot-on perfect pies.

Bella’s in Acworth, Mario’s in Roswell, Alpine Bakery in Crabapple, and Traditions in Suwanee/Duluth.
There are hardly any comparisons. These are the only ones in town who have pizza worth eating.

I’m glad someone else recognizes Traditions in Duluth. They have the only pizza that tastes like it was prepared by Italians. Take it from someone who grew up going to Little Italy in New York, Traditions is REAL pizza.

To corey, my one experience with Pasta Vino went like this: I called in a pizza to go. Was told it would be ready in X amount of time (I don’t remember the actual amount) Was there at specified time. Paid and stood aside for them to bring it up. Waited and waited and waited at the counter. Was told it was “coming up”. Waited and waited some more and calmly and politley said I’d just take the money back, but was assured, “coming up”. Then after being there about an hour after calling it in, saw a pie go in the oven that had all of the toppings on it that I ordered. Indeed that was my pizza, and when I got it, I questioned why I was lied to. The cashier then pretty much threw the money on the top of the box instead of apologizing, causing a pretty good scene. The pizza itself was so soaked with grease, it was inedible. This was about 10 years ago, and needless to say, I will never darken that door again, ever.

Fritti’s is the only edible pizza in town. All the rest is bogus.
Let me correct myself: Little Azio’s makes a thin crust pie that shouldn’t be called “pizza,” but still tastes interesting.

Vic’s Pizza at the corner of Peachtree Ind and Pleasant Hill in the Kroger shopping center.
Great pizza. (And really great garlic puffs! Yum!)
And the staff is the wonderful. They are very friendly and the service is great!
Vic’s used to be Zapoli’s when it was located closer to Gwinnett Place Mall. They’ve been in their new location for several months now.
