Where do you go for fried green tomatoes?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Fried green tomatoes used to be something your mama chopped up and mixed in with the okra when you couldn’t wait for the fresh tomatoes to turn red in the spring. Now they’re dragged through panko crumbs or decorated with goat cheese to be served up at the finest restaurants. See our latest In the Mood for some great places to get them — adorned and unadorned. Regardless of how they’re fixed up, fried green tomatoes remain a peculiarly Southern delicacy. Even if you’re not from around here, where do you go for your fried green tomatoes?

Best I’ve had are on the buffet at “The Journey’s End” restaurant in Loganville on U.S. 78. It’s also the best country buffet I’ve ever eaten at in the Atlanta area. Vegetables are fresh, not swimming in butter or loaded with salt and the peach cobbler ala mode is worth the trip all by itself.

I fry my own. However, if I have to order them from a restaurant, I would get them from Sea Breeze (in Douglasville) and Micks.

Oh, healthy me…sometimes you have to drop the self-righteous “i only eat healthy things” persona and realize that great food doesn’t always come in perfectly healthy packages. Sometimes, great food is just downright unhealthy.
But, you partake only occasionally, and savor each crunchy, tangy bite.
Sure, you MIGHT live longer - it’s a gamble either way - but I guarantee you those of us who savor life from time to time without worrying about the net gain to our overall health will ENJOY our possibly-shortened lives far more than any curmudgeonly-minded health nut.
Not that fresh, heirloom tomatoes sliced and sprinkled with freshly ground peppers and just a hint of fleur de sel aren’t THA BOMB!…but fried green tomatoes are pretty darn good.

I agree with Sidney. Went to Mary Mac’s recently and had the FGT as an app; they were great. BTW, if you haven’t been to Mary Mac’s lately, the place is on the upswing. We all know MM’s has struggled with consistency over the years, but our lunch there two weeks ago was great. A previous visit about a year earlier wasn’t so great.

Sorry to burst your bubble about the “peculiarly southern delicacy” - but I grew up eating fried green tomatoes in New Jersey (but, remember, the lower third of New Jersey is actually below the Mason-Dixon Line). My grandmother made them at the beginning and also at the end of the growing season when we would go out and pick a barrel full of green tomatoes the night before the first frost. She also made green tomato pickles - yum!

I love Agnes and Muriel’s and Mary Mac’s but if you happen to go to Tunica MS gambling, drop in at The Hollywood Cafe in Robinsville. Their claim to fame is that they INVENTED fried dill pickles. Whether that is true or not, the pickles and the FGTs were super. Same secret batter on these and the onion rings - fried food heaven!!

Agnes and Muriel’s fried green tomatoes are good. It’s one of my favorite places to eat. I alos enjoy them at Up the Crek as well. Also, I see lots of comments about how good the Blue Willow Inn is. I’ve only eaten there once and, as a native Georgian, I have to say I was terribly disappointed in the food. My family absolutely hated it. We won’t be making the drive again.

Best FGT are the ones with a light, crispy cornmeal coating that need only a little salt and pepper. Since no else one mentioned cornmeal I don’t know where to find them. Thick flour crust or heavy sauce ruins them in my opinion.
