Where’s the Best BBQ in Georgia?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
RIGHT: BBQ in Georgia means pulled pork sammies
Photo: Phil Skinner/AJC staff
A new book, “BBQ Joints: Stories and Secret Recipes from the Barbeque Belt” (Gibbs Smith, $15.95, April 2008), takes a good look at the South through one of its favorite pastimes — barbecue.
Author David Gelin is not a Southerner, but since he travels back roads with his dog Buddy, he seems to think he’s qualified to comment on one of the greatest rites of passage of being Southern: understanding barbecue and where to get it.
The book is filled with amusing anecdotes from folks all over the so-called “barbecue belt,” and many share secret recipes like Cajun red beans and rice from Danken Trail Bar-B-Q in Monroe, La., and the brew for concocting Georgia’s own “Mountain Man” Don Bryant’s boiled peanuts (the secret? use a stainless steel pot).
Tales and recipes from Texas, Oklahoma (who said that was the South?) Louisiana, Arkansas (see note on Oklahoma), Missouri (they’re kidding right?), Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina and our own dear Peach State.
From Georgia, the following ‘cue joints are featured: B-B-Q King in Albany, Bubba’s Ribs & Q in Tifton, Fincher’s Barbecue in Macon, Melear’s Barbecue in Fayetteville, Mountain Man Bar-B-Que in Flowery Branch, Oinkers Family Restaurant in Clayton, Shack by the Track in St. George, Williams’ Barbecue in Danielsville and Wynnton Pitt B-B-Q & Restaurant in Columbus.
Well, I thought I knew my ‘cue, but I’m sorry to report I have never eaten at ANY of these places — though I can’t wait to give them a try when I’m in their areas. IF I’m ever in their areas. Two others I’ve heard are great and haven’t gotten to are Beaver Creek Biscuit Company in Lithia Springs and Sugar Ribs, which is actually in Chattanooga.
Have you been to any of these spots? What did you think? Where’s the best BBQ in Georgia?
Still need more ‘cue? Portraits from Gelin’s book will be on exhibit at the University of South Carolina’s McKessick Museum from May 10 to July 19.

Well, it’s definately NOT DREAMLAND! I went there once and never again. I had to gnaw that stuff off the bone. Way too tough. I’m a big fan of Fat Matt’s Rib Shack; nice, simple and good. For a chain I would have to say Shane’s; consistantly good. Some of the best I’ve had, years ago was at a place called Spiced Right in Lilburn.

HANDS DOWNT HE BEST BBQ IN GA IS…..AT MY CRIB! LOL!
IM FROM A SMALL TOWN IN GEORGIA AND THERE IS THIS ONE SPOT I GREW UP ON CALLED BRINSONS BBQ. AMAZING!! THE SAUCE IS ALSO MERMERIZING. MR. BRINSON DIED YEARS AGOP BUT HIS FAMILY CARRIES ON. THEY ALSO SMOKE TURKEYS IN A VENEGAR MIXTURE THAT IS SO SCRUMPTIOUS.
IT AMAZES ME HOW OFTEN SMALL TOWNS ARE OVERLOOKED. WHEN PEOPLE GET TO SAVANNAH, THEY THINK THATS THE END OF THE GEORGIA LINE. IF YOU WRITE A BOOK, GO EVERYWHERE BEFORE YOU START NAMING THE OBVIOUS.

Although the worst of the bbq spot’s back home in Chicago would run circles around the best ones here in Georgia, I would have to say that the best I have tasted here would have to be JJ’S Rib Shack off of Cambellton Road by Greebbriar Mall. That’s also if your into waiting 2hr’s for an order.

I’m so glad that Fincher’s was listed! They have them in Macon and Warner Robins. The main one in Macon is just off the I-16/I-75 interchange so it’s definitely worth checking out on your next trip to Savannah.
My husband and I both grew up in the area and Fincher’s was always his favorite. Old Clinton’s BBQ (between Macon and Gray) is another good one.

It used to be Knowles BBQ in McRae but they closed a couple of years ago. A close second is, believe it or not, the Dairy Queen in the same town - they make their own and have for years. I don’t get the Zeb’s and Fresh Air fans. Who wants dried up meat crumbles doused in pepper and vinegar?

The best BBQ places in Georgia aren’t in the Atlanta area. South Georgia has some of the best places in the country. I have tried so many places in Atlanta and can’t find any that compared to down south. It simply comes from the fact that Atlanta has too many influences from other states and it waters down everything from the BBQ, stores, and other things. B&B Barbeque in Albany, GA is my favorite by far- nothing compares up here.

The best BBQ is in Eastern NC. A whole hog slow cooked for 24 hours over hickory coals and basted with a simple sauce of apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, salt and red pepper.
In Georgia the best BBQ I have had is Fox Bros. Maddys is ok. The Koreans on Buford Hyw make some good stuff.

The worst are two well known establishments - Sprayberrys and Melears. BOTH overrated and overpriced. I would never eat at them again.
The last time I ate at Harold’s, two waitresses got in an argument for all to see, and the owner refused service to someone who tried to clean off their own table. They have a good product, but I think they’ve become a little arrogant in their service.

I don’t get any of this love for Spiced Right in Roswell. I live right nearby and ate there once- TERRIBLE. It was their first week opened though, so maybe a second chance?
Since I’m from Marietta, I’ve got to give my props to Williamson Bros., although I know it has its share of haters. Sam and Daves (aka BBQ1) makes the best pork I’ve ever had. There’s a place in Austell, Wallace BBQ, that deserves mention too for their excellent pork and better ribs. Swallow at the Hollow in Roswell has a great atmosphere, but sometimes their ‘cue isn’t the best, although its always a fun place to visit. Also, check out BBQ Steet in Kennesaw- almost a clone of Wallace, down to the food.
Outside of Cobb/N. Fulton, I’d agree with Fincher’s (ate there on the way to The Cocktail Party). I also love Two Brothers in Ball Ground- knew it was going to be great the second I saw that sawdust floor. Lastly, Sprayberry’s in Newnan, Lewis knew his stuff…

Have to echo the sentiments of those who have paid well-deserved props to the following, listed in order of what I believe (in my humble opinion) are the best ‘cue joints in the Empire State of the South:
1 - Harold’s on McDonough Blvd. (the cracklin’ cornbread and signature hot sauce moves ‘em to the top) 2 - Fresh Air BBQ in Jackson (atmosphere counts for something, and the black-stained walls from years of smokin’ meat enhance the experience, if you ask me…) 3 - Two Brothers in Ballground (Hot Damn that’s good pork!!) 4 - Sam and Daves in Marietta (they even have a school you can attend to learn how to replicate their heavenly goodness!!)

I sometimes cringe reading these bbq blogs because there are some “bbq elitists” out there, but I’m not picky. I don’t think I’ve eaten barbecue that I didn’t like at least somewhat. I think DearingStDawg and I may need to grab a bite together sometime, though. I also like Williamson Bros in Marietta and I like Wallace’s pork sandwiches. Johnny’s in Powder Springs isn’t bad. I wish I had the time and money to go on a bbq tour and visit all the places that people mention here—Fresh Air, Melear’s, etc. I’ve been wanting to go to the one on Whitlock Ave (Sam and Dave’s ?)…and for a chain, I love Sonny’s sliced pork with sweet sauce. I love sauce! I think Jim N Nick’s is overrated, at least judging by how many cars are in the parking lot in Hiram. Their sides were good but the ‘cue wasn’t anything. I’ll try bbq almost anywhere, though and funny enough, I’ve even tried the bbq sandwich at Dairy Queen on Dallas Highway! It was so-so. I think I had Barbecue Street from a street vendor/kiosk at the Marietta Square on the Fourth of July…I still want to try Poole’s near Ellijay, too.

Arkansas is the South! Oklahoma is a mixture of the South and the lower Midwest. You did get it right about Missouri.

Best places to eat BBQ: -Two Brothers in Ball Ground- better when the shavings/sawdust was on the ground. -Slopes (Roswell, Woodstock, Cumming): They have excellent BBQ -Great BBQ in that little joint in St. Simons across from the Crab Trap. -Dreamland is okay, but the one in Tuscaloosa is unbelievable. -The person from Oklahoma- I don’t care what you think. If you don’t like BBQ Pork Sandwiches, you aren’t eatin’ BBQ. -The guy who wrote this article. I’ve heard of all these places, and been to 1/2 of them. I dont know about this guy. I have eaten at several of those places and they are NOT the best BBQ in Ga and we have lived all over Ga. Our faves are Fresh Air, based in Jackson, but also has a place in Macon (FAR outweighing Fincher’s in Macon, Zeb’s in between Athens and Hartwell, and the Little Piggy in Forsyth. My husband also likes someplace south of St. Simons on I-16, but I dont. I think it just makes him reminisce of his Ga/Fla football days.

Can’t believe all of the negative posts towards Dreamland…Here in the middle of Bama country their ribs are really good. They must do something different in the Atlanta stores, sometimes expansion can be a bad thing…Moved to Bama from Fla. couple years ago, used to eat at OB’s in Henry county when traveling up 75. Haven’t been in a while, haven’t seen it mentioned, wonder why. Also, as a long-time Grizzard fan, have been waiting for years to eat at Sprayberry’s. Finally had the chance, VERY DISAPPOINTED, ribs were tough, bbq pork was not tasty, brunswick stew was too watered down, and the service was horrible. I’ll give them one more chance….maybe it was a bad day..

I’m surprised there aren’t more insults being traded here…BBQ is so very personal, and so very regional in recipe.
Since no one is talking about chicken, I’ll start: PR (the reborn Pappy Red’s) up 400 (Exit 14) is usually very reliable…tasty sauce, moist, and they have good Brunswick Stew.
Surprisingly enough, if the stars are all in alignment, Nick and Jim’s in Smyrna also does a mean bird…nicely smoked, then finished in sauce. That said, the stars are rarely all in alignment, and the birds can get dry.
P.S. I vote Sweats in Sloperton as the most overrated BBQ…my dad used to force us to eat there on trips to Hilton Head in my youth, and wow, as hard as it is to screw up pork, they did it, every time. I believe this was a favorite of Lewis Grizzard as well. Their Brunswick Stew was bad too. The sauce…ugh…don’t get me started. I still have nightmares about having to eat there.

One Star (Apharetta) is my favorite but I grew up on Texas style BBQ and they are about the closest there is around Atlanta.
The Factory family from McAlester OK had a place near the airport for a while and they were good. I wish they were still in business.
Dean’s in Jonesbore has excellent stew and good GA style ‘que. Harold’s, two locations, has great cracklin’ cornbread. Fat Matt’s was very good last time I tried. I personally think Swallow in the Hollow average although my wife likes it. GA Pig near the coast is okay. I like Dreamland.
One of the best places within a few hundred miles is Bob Gibson’s in NE Alabama.
I don’t care for Slopes because I don’t want everything, collards and ‘que, so sweet.

Mountain Man BBQ is outside of “downtown” flowery branch about 2 minutes off the exit. This is the best bbq in GA and is cooked in his homemade smoker. His kitchen is an old School Bus that is parked next to the RR tracks. No kidding! He serves you from the window and you eat on picknick tables. His dad ran a vegetable stand next door and I would highly recommend this outstanding example of local BBQ.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Hot Thomas’s (or maybe I missed it) on Hwy 15 between Watkinsville and Greensboro. And it all comes with Hot’s philosophy of life. It’s pretty basic but always good…and they offer vinegar based and ketchup based sauces.

I am from central S.C. and lived in Atlanta for 12 years in the 80’s and 90’s. I have eaten at Fincher’s, Williamson Brothers and many others, but, NONE COMPARE TO THE BBQ IN THE MIDLANDS OF S.C. around Columbia! Maurice’s Piggy Park in Columbia, Wise’s in Newberry, Cannon’s in Little Mountain and many others trump any bbq made in Georgia, PERIOD!!!! When Dreamland first came to the Atlanta area on Alpharetta Hwy, it was hands down the best BBQ anywhere near. Awesome BBQ. I ate there at least several times a month for the first couple of years I lived nearby. After moving away I missed it terribly, and I made a special trip to it last year to get a taste of the good stuff. I was so disappointed. It just wasn’t the same, it was worse than Sonny’s (and that is bad!).

I have sought out good barbeque places for many years and have found the absolute best pulled pork barbeque anywhere is Mad Dog’s Barbeque in Conyers, Ga. It has absolutely no fat, the outside is smoke flavored, moist, tender and it can be eaten without any sauce, however his sauce is wonderful. The brisket and stew are average but the pork is exceptional. Try Wallace’s in Austell or Davis Barbeque in Jasper. They are always excellent. Those who favored Sonny’s, Williamsons, Col. Poole, Two Brothers, Pappy Red’s don’t understand or appreciate real true hickory smoked Georgia barbeque.

For me, it’s all about moist (but not drippy) pulled pork sandwiches. Vinegar-based red sauce with a slightly sweet slant and a good deal of hot kick. Don’t forget the extra-sour slice of pickle on top for some added tang and crunch. Soggy crinkle fries to dip in the stew. PORK!
For that, you have to travel to the off-the-map towns of south Georgia with names like Ty Ty, Hahira, Doerun, Gordy, Sasser, Alapaha, and the like. The small run down cinder block buildings with a pass-thru window to place your order. The dives where the food comes in a styrofoam box and the cutlery and napkin in a plastic pouch.
That’s where you’ll find the good stuff that’ll give you a buzz (C;

Hey, Missouri ribs people, yeah that stuff is good. But you have to realize that there are style differences and preferences, not just one single definition. Some folks like sliced beef brisket from Texas, some like KC style ribs, some like pulled pork sandwiches. But don’t be mistaken, it’s ALL bbq and it’s ALL good (C;

I’ve tried it 3-4 times and each time I swore I would never go back and it’s been 15 years now so I’m sticking to my word! The ribs are “sloppey wet” and living up to the restaurants name “FAT” as in fatty! And, the baked beans made me want to vomit. They’re flavored with Jack Daniels. If I wanted to cocktail I would order one but I don’t want one poured in my baked beans. Anyway, this place is gross!

I can’t say where or who has the best BBQ because I couldn’t or will never be able to try them all. (I only wish I could). My favorites are Holcombs in White Plains and Greensboro, Harolds in Lakewood and Jonesboro and Fresh Air in Jackson. Not necesarily in that order. I usually judge by the Brunswick Stew and sauce. It’s hard to mess up BBQ if you keep a watch over it.

There is a word that does not appear once on this page before this post. This word, to a true barbecue aficionado, means the absolute difference between great barbecue and the rest.
The word, you ask? The word is bark.
I’ll go ahead and say that Dreamland has good bark. BBQ1 was honestly disappointing (although their sauce was fantastic). Thompson Brothers in Marietta does alright with their bark.
But I’ve yet to find a restaurant that can even come close to what I’ve been able to do in my backyard, and I suppose it’s because it takes me around 12 hours to do it correctly. Shortcutting by boiling meat, baking it, foiling it.. those methods are for timely service, not developing bark. You absolutely will not find the greatest barbecue in a restaurant, because hungry people are not willing to wait 12 hours for their food. So restaurants are forced to shortcut with the methods above, thus sacrificing flavor.

Daddy D’s!!!!!!!!!!* D stands for delicious!! Near Oakland Cemetary Maddy’s is good too, Had the wing’s at Shanes and gave up, NASTY!!!! We live close to Spiced Right in Lilburn and they are spotty, you get there and they are always out of something. Tried Rib’s and Blues on Sugarloaf Pkwy and they were delicious. Hometown Bar B Que on Lawrenceville is good, quick and has a real southern feel. Of course Dusty’s is an Atlanta Institution, their wings are awesome!

It’s not world-class but the Barbeque Kitchen on Virginia Ave. by the Airport is pretty good. It’s a common stop fo r airport workers and it’s close and convenient for visitors who want to try a bite of good ‘que. I used to love the Flying Pig (just down the hill in the back of a liquor store) but they changed hands and I can’t say if the new owners got the old recipes.

Lee got it right: Metro-Atlanta BBQ sucks swampwater. The elitist attitude of anyone who thinks Atlanta BBQ joints hold so much as the proverbial candle to places in south and east Georgia needs to be punished with a trip to the woodshed.
Among my favorites: Sconyers BBQ in Augusta, Heavy’s BBQ in Crawfordville, (at least it used to great; not been there in a while) Sprayberry’s BBQ in Newnan. OF those, I would say Sconyers would be THE most popular, and Heavy’s is THE best tastin’.
Eat BBQ in metro-Atlanta at your own peril. Every time I have visited one of the city places, I come away with nausea and vomiting.

To all of you folks from Chicago and KC, Delta is ready when you are. I have eaten BBQ from Georgia to Texas and the standard that I judge from is Fincher’s in Macon. Go to JR’s in Macon for the sliced beef. Country’s in Columbus is good and Pig in a Pit has good ribs.

I’m with you, Mama S.! “The best barbeque is the one that is closest when I am rarin’ to eat barbeque,” she said. Good example from today: Reading thru this blog last night and today got me in the mood for bbq so the wife, kids and I got in the car and were going to go to Wallace in Austell, but had to run a quick errand and ended up being closer to Johnny’s in Powder Springs so we went there instead. It’s not the greatest or anything but it hit the spot. I hadn’t eaten barbecue in a couple of months so it was nice. Pork plate (pulled pork, sliced bun, fries and some stew) and of course a sweet tea! (is there any other kind of tea?) I mentioned last night, that I’m just not an elitist about bbq, as long as I don’t get sick eating it! I just don’t have the time or money to travel all over the state/country or I would and try all these hyped places. I’ve never had Fat Matt’s by the way..although I think I tried Shane’s if that’s the one at the Food Court of Town Center Mall? (More times than not, I’ll order barbecue if I’m somewhere that offers it as a choice-so I realize it wasn’t “true cue” but it was a decent sandwich and pretty large).

Best BBQ menu (across the board) is Jim & Nick’s. Everything is very good, including the sides.

Does anyone remember the Flying Pig down by the airport. My grandfather was an Atlanta cop and that was his favorite. Along with that, Harolds ranks high for Q. The Brunswick stew is the best. Fresh Air is great. Poole’s in Elljay is good. Sprayberry’s in Newnan, with its Grizzard plate, is good. I like Dusty’s for Carolina style. It’s al good. Bailey’s, Ringgold - Probably the most underrated barbecue place in GA because it’s off the beaten path 13 miles south of Chattanooga on Hwy 41. But, if you eat there, YOU won’t underrate it.
Johnny Harris, Savannah - On Victory Drive, you need to eat in “the kitchen.” Simply incredible since 1924. Great pork, but it is the only place in GA I know you can get barbecued lamb. Plus, you can wash it down with a beer.
Jo-Max, Metter - I-16 at Metter exit. Very good. Haven’t seen it mentioned, yet.
Pig ‘N’ Chik, Sandy Springs - Even though Jim Graddy is misguided and loves the North Avenue Insect Institute, his barbecue is divine.
Dusty’s (near Emory) - Clifton & Briarcliff. Make sure to get hushpuppies since it’s one of the few GA bbq places to serve them.
Old Brick Pit, Chamblee - Peachtree Industrial, just south of Lowe’s. If you can’t get to Fresh Air in Jackson, Macon, or Athens, this is a fantastic substitute.
“Sprayberry’s, Newnan” - You need to eat the stew here on white bread. Heavenly.
**Daddy Joe’s, Gaffney, SC” - @ 1 mile east of the 92 exit (rt. above the Big Peach), you will thank me profusely if you ever stop at this shrine, I assure you.
I agree with a lot of the other assessments here, but it’s obvious there are people rating bbq joints that have limited experience and shouldn’t consider themselves knowledgeable enough to join in the discussion. The real Dreamland in Tuscaloosa is phenomenal and worth the trip, but the franchises here are terrible imitations. As far as Columbus, GA bbq places, they are mediocre.

We can argue Q til the cows come in. However, including Melears is near criminal. Eaten there three times and three times got greasy, grisley pork pig. Some dodo included Sonny’s. That’s like saying WalMart is upscale. Dean’s in Jonesboro has a good pork pig sammich but the stew is barely edible. Sconyers is S.C Q, EG they don’t have Brunswick stew; I’d rather not eat hash with Q. For overall Q (where the pork pig and stew are both good): Harolds, Fresh Air, and OB’s are well worth a visit. Sprayberry’s is tolerable. Harold’s has pretty good ribs if ya like em smothered in sauce. Kudos to the joint in Griffin on 19/41. Yeah, Old Hickory House used to be very good, but the stew had a little too much sugar; overpowering if ya ate a whole bowl of it. I’m still laffin about including Sonnys.

The best BBQ I’ve ever eaten is at the Georgia Pig in Brunswick. Get off at Exit 29 on I-95 to enjoy some of the most mouth-watering BBQ in the USA. and the potato salad is just as good. I’m glad to see Vandy’s (in Statesboro) mentioned a lot here. I grew up in the ‘boro and the taste and smoky smell of Vandy’s was a big part of my childhood. I do love the mustard-based sauce and think it beats the tomato-y sweet stuff. They also make the BEST Brunswick stew I’ve ever had.
One important point, though: you have to get your Vandy’s barbeque from the old place downtown where the barbeque pit is, not in the mall.

I’m partial to the mustard-based sauced Q that’s found in the SC low country and several places in GA, but leave the slaw in the pot, thank you. I travel GA quite a bit and have found that there are many good Q places. Most are good. Then, there are the exceptionally good ones. I judge a Q place by the quality of its sliced pork sandwich, it’s stew and/or corn bread — before I venture into the pulled pork or ribs. If the place doesn’t serve onion rings with the Q, I don’t go back, unless it exceptional — like Harold’s. This blog provides a long list of Q places that I haven’t tried, so I’m off to some good eating places. I’m going to try Fox Bros, Vandy’s in Statesboro, and Chester’s in Columbus. See Ya!

**Norris BBQ**It’s and hour and a half away down I-20 near a little town called Warrenton. They only serve on Friday and Saturday. Every time family comes up or we go down, I buy a few pounds and several quarts of stew to freeze. If these folks opened a place in Atlanta or Marietta, they would be rich in no time. Take 20 east to the Warrenton/Washington exit, go right. Follow it through to Warrenton and go right over the railroad tracks. When you pass the silo on the right slow down. You will cross Long Branch Creek and make an immediate left (I THINK its warrenton-mitchell rd. It’s about 4 miles up on the left-you will see the flashing sign. If you are headed to Augusta or SC on a weekend, it is well worth the half hour detour…

No offense but if you named Shane’s Sonny’s, or Fatt Matt’s on your list then you don’t know bbq. I also don’t get Fresh Air, I made the road trip to Jackson and was disappointed. The Shack on Main St. in East Point is good (real smoky flavor, no sauce needed) JJ’s rib shack on Cascade is good but service is terrible. One Star ranch in Buckhead is good for the texas mesquite lovers.

If you aren’t Georgian born, you have no standing in this debate. You simply lack the sophisticated palette necessary for such a discriminating judgment. The best bbq in Marietta is about 30 miles southeast, at Harold’s. The best bbq in Savannah is about 225 miles northwest, at Fresh Air. If you don’t mention either of these fine establishments in your reckoning you are either a yankee or a communist. Or a Texan.

Being raised in Macon & Cordele, the best barbeque was cooked by Pop; however, since being in South Carolina since ‘79, I have discovered Duke’s Barbeque in Orangeburg, SC, (by the Pepsi Cola warehouse) and will put it up against ANY prepared in my home state. Don’t look for brunswick stew; however, Duke’s hash is as close to my favorite brunswick stew taste I’ve ever had. Stop by on your way down to Charleston!!

FAT MATT’S SUCKS. DUSTY’S REALLY SUCKS. You can tell a lot of these bloggers have never been out of the Atlanta metro area. Boiled ribs is not BBQ. It is cheating! Of course the meat will fall of the bone. That is not the measure of good BBQ. My favorite, notice I didn’t say the best because I haven’t had it all, is Chesters in Columbus, GA.

My wife made banana pudding last night. Mmmm. We had Johnny’s in Powder Springs yesterday. Williamson Bros in Marietta is one of my favorites. And simmer down on the anti-metro Atlanta bit. Maybe you live in metro Atlanta but drive 2 hours to eat barbecue? That’s great! Or maybe you live in a small town with a great cue place. Great again! But people do live in and around Atlanta and eat barbecue too..what’s convenient! I don’t live in Atlanta but in Cobb which is “metro” Atlanta area but I’m not spending all day on a Saturday just to eat. I could eat barbecue almost every day but I’m not driving to Columbus, Savannah or even Newnan (no offense to residents of those places).

Although, I had a some good pulled pork made by a guy named Holt who lives in Winder. He smoked it and pulled it himself at his house and we had it at a baby shower that was held there last summer for a friend. He had several sauces to choose from, though and I did put Williamson Bros sauce on mine! I just have to have sauce, no matter how smoky the flavor is—I love sauce.

Paul’s in Lexington is pretty darn good. Open every Saturday and the 4th of July. Try the naner puddin.
And for my two cents, the words “best” and “barbeque” don’t belong in the same sentence when we’re talking about franchises like Shane’s.
As Lewis Grizzard said, never eat at a BBQ restaurant that serves anything other than BBQ. Words to live by.

G & B Ribs & Things in Pooler is great. When the smoker in the front has smoke coming out at lunchtime you know it’s time to eat. Great everything, but the brisket is fantastic. So tender you can cut it with a plastic fork. Also, they’ll give you sample cups of every side they make so you can figure out what you want, you’ll almost be full from just that.
Sconyer’s in Augusta is also fantastic. You need two stomachs to handle all the food. I really like the loaf of Sunbeam bread they bring out…that’s a trademark of those hole in the wall places you eat at.

I traveled the state of Georgia for over 30 years, and I did not eat in every BBQ joint. Some of the memorial ones are the Fresh Air in Jackson, Finschers in Macon, Vandys in Statesboro, and the Old Hickory Houses in Atlanta. If you are ever down in deep South GA try Woodeye’s in Nashville, Ga. It will quallify as a true joint that will leave you hankering for more.

Sprayberry’s in Newnan is overrated. It’s not good BBQ, I don’t care what Grizzard said, and I went to high school with him. Duncan’s BBQ across the street was much better and had the best brunswick stew anywhere. Too bad Mr.& Mrs. Duncan got too old and had to sell out.

First off I am a Memphian who is proud to call Atlanta my home for the last 12 years, so I consider myself a Q aficionado. Fat Matts, boring. greasy and highly over rated. I wouldn’t even call Dustys bbq. As far as intown q goes, The Shack on Main in East Pont is really soild. Ribs are tender, and have a real deep smoke flavor. The only complaint is that the sauces are hit or miss.If your ever in Winfield Alabama, * the Boars Butt* bbq is great. The best pulled pork sammie is topps bbq* on Union Ave in Memphis, followed by the best ribs being Leonards. also in Memphis. And before everybody starts bashing me about “getting out of metro ATL to find Q” I have and I haven’t found anything that memorable to type about. Besides, I will drive up to 50 miles for great Q and have done so.

armstrong’s bbq in summerville is a good joint too. love their thin tangy vinegary pepper hot sauce. it’s about as close to nc style as you can get in georgia. zeb’s in danielsville is awesome too. i too share a love for the bbq at the varsity.kc pit in sandy springs is great.bobby and june’s is excellent too. hook’s bbq in millen doesn’t get enough praise here either. it’s liek a fine plate of bbq, you’ve got to bare down on the meat and ease off the potato salad. then you’ve got yourself something. i too agree that melears has fallen off the map. once the old man passed on things there haven’t been the same since. too bad as it used to be mighty fine.

Let’s start with this. Bar-be-que in Georgia is chopped, picked, or sliced PORK (for all you Atlantans that comes from a HOG). Not ribs, not beef…ribs are ribs, not bar-be-que,and a roast is not bar-be-que. And DON”T put no damn sweet sauce on it. As a matter of fact really good places only have two types of sauce regular and hot.
My two favorite places are Fresh Air in Jackson and Stinson’s in Lumber City. Another good one is Jimbo’s in Homerville.
All three places know how to make good Brunswick Stew, which is just as important as the meat if you are going to be considered a good quality place!

The best slow cooked pulled pork and hash over rice. YES! HASH OVER RICE. You’ve got to try it. The best potato salad and slaw served with the freshest bread you will ever it. No they don’t serve cold beer or dessert, you won’t need it after eating the Q. Fincher’s in Maconis just awful. They drown theirs in the sauce. They are trying to hide how AWFUL it really is. Vandy’s is a stomach ache served on a plate. The best BBQ around Macon I have found so far is PIG IN A PIT on Bass Road. Baked beans and slaw are good. The Brunswick stew is the best I’ve had outside of Brunswick. Give them a try.

i’d put the stew at the hickory pig in gainesville up agianst anybody in the state as the best barr nunn. ribs are big, meaty and tender, but the pulled pork is devine done in a succulent thin sauce, tomato based, with a hint of sweetness, and a flair for the devine with just the right melody of heat and sweet that makes the hickory smoked pit fired slow cooked pork sing. it’s the best inthe state, even in this competetion rich 159 counties we are blessed to live.

I usually rate a bbq eatery by their brunswick stew. Growing up in Dublin our stew was made chuncky style…you know what your eating…but up here in North Georgia they put it through a blender…looks nasty. My grandmother use to make her stew with the meat from a hogs head…she changed that to chicken…north Georgia they usually add beef, pork and chicken. The beef makes the stew very rich…it will set you free! Best sauce…White’s Barbeque in Hartwell, GA…chicken is usually moist…they serve a great pork sandwich.

Shane’s, Sonny’s, ANYTHING in Chicago that is not pizza??? Get a grip, folks. Zebs in Danielsville is good, Jot ‘em Down Country Store in Athens is really good, but the best I’ve had ( and I travel the country) is Scotts Walk Up Barbecue, or SWUB in Cartersville. Fairly new, right downtown, but DAYUM, is it good!!! If you are in NYC, go to Dinosaur BBQ which is also in Syracuse and Rochester, started by two Alabama boys, and it is worth the trip. Sonny’s?? You’re kidding, right? I’ll bet you think Captain D’s has the best seafood.

Fat Matt’s is okay, good for a Saturday afternoon snack, but I wouldn’t drive an hour to eat there. Don’t know what’s in their sauce or if they use liquid smoke. It’s more of a crutch for Atlantans to use when they feel the urge. I grew up eating Spiced Right, which is located off Hwy 29 in Lilburn. The best places are on the rural 2-lane highways in South Georgia, Lower Alabama, etc. Mom told me about eating Fresh Aire in Jackson when she was a kid.

The best around is Zeiglers Bar B Que & Catering in in Acworth, GA. The best brisket, and damn good pulled pork, etc. They have great brunswick stew if you like it hot. Their sauce is different though. They make an apple boubon flavored one and think everyone should like it. It’s good, but it’s not Rum Boogie (available at Harry’s).

Having trvelled all over the South with the waistline to prove it, here are some good ones in no real order: — Fresh Air, Jackson — Pippins, Covington & Conyers — Melears, Fayetteville — Zebs, Danielsville — Dusty’s, near Emory’s wierdos — Holcomb’s, Greensboro and White Plains — Daddy D’s, Memorial Drive — Harolds, by the prison and in Jonesboro — Abdullah’s, Fairburn — Vandy’s, Statesboro and a real sleeper for you — Washington Food Market, on US 78 in Washington. A black pepper sauce you won’t forget

Some of the best BBQ is at Wyatt’s at the corner of Memorial Dr and Maynard Terrace and Pig In A Pit in Macon. Shane’s is OK. Dreamland sucks but I would take it over Satterfields in Macon. That is absolutely the worst BBQ I have ever had in my life. The BBQ sauce is straight vinegar with a little red coloring. As far as chain’s go, Smokey Bones is my favorite. Fatt Matt’s is ok but overrated.

The reason that BBQ Street is like Wallace’s is because in 1992, Mike Bell bought the recipes from my father & opened Bell’s BBQ (now BBQ Street), Johnny’s BBQ was my dad’s until daddy sold in 1986 & retired. Thought that I would let you know why the similarities. I was raised on BBQ & could still eat it every day. LOVE MY Q!

Finchers and Fresh Air. Two of the best. I grew up eating Finchers BBQ and still enjoy visiting the Houston Avenue location for the best BBQ. Fresh Air right at the top for a tangy and delicious pulled pork sandwich.

Fresh Air is great. Sprayberry’s is good. Old South in Smyrna has the BEST stew. Simple, yet heavenly.
But the best cue is LowCountry Barbecue. They used to be strictly catering, but have a restaurant in Suwanee now. Their Carolina Style sammies are the best. I could eat 10 of them. And the vinegar sauce is good enough to cause an addiction.
And I find anyone questionable who mentions a large chain or a place you can find in a strip mall.
But I do have faith in America to see no one said Sonny’s!

I have had BBQ at several places in ATL, but found the best when I moved to Middle Ga (and Finchers is not on my list) Pulled pork: Satterfields and Fresh Air in Macon Ribs: White Lightning (dry rub)and Pig in a Pit in Macon Smoked wings: Pig in a Pit Almost as important as the meat… Slaw: Satterfields and Fresh Air Brunswick Stew: Satterfields I must say that I did recently eat at Fox Bros on Dekalb and LOVED their fried pickles and their chopped brisket.

I feel homesick.
I haven’t eaten in my two fave BBQ joints in years — not even sure they’re open anymore. Sweat’s in Soperton (tongue lolling out of mouth as I type this) and Mack’s in Brunswick. The Ga. Pig down Hwy. 17 was better, but Mack’s was closer to downtown Brunswick when I lived there. They also had all-you-can-eat night (Tuesdays, I think). And it’s where my wife and I introduced friends from Calif. and Utah to the unparalleled pleasures of pit-smoked Georgia BBQ, baskets of hush puppies and batter-dipped fries.
Now I’m living in Barbecue Hell — also known as Eastern North Carolina, where they insult pig and person alike with vinegar sauce. If I’d wanted to eat douched meat … .

Personally, I love Williamson Brothers in Marietta. There is nothing like getting a steaming plate of “outside chopped”. I am not a fan of Old South in Smyrna. As for the BBQ in Oklahoma, man, what happened to their taste buds? I went to a BBQ Cook-Off in Lawton, OK a few years ago. The winning concoction tasted to the four of us (all from Georgia) as though they were barbequeing a Mesquite log.

Pat Smith I’ve had Chicago bbq and it can’t touch anywhere in the south. Yall eat spaghetti as a side dish with your bbq up there so that disqualifies you from knowing what you’re talking about.
To all of you naming corporate chain restaurants as the best bbq you’ve had its obvious you have not had good que and need to get out more.
The best ‘que in the ATL is Sheffield’s Ole Hickory Stick on Campbellton Rd near County Line Road. His joint is an old shack and cargo truck and is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. The ribs are the best in ATL and the brisket is the best period. He even has beef ribs, which is a rare find in a GA bbq joint.
2nd best in Atl is JJ’s Ribshack on Campbellton. But I agree w/ the others, the service is horrible and if you protest anything be prepared for the cursing out of your life. 3rd is Hodges in Decatur, although this one is a steep drop off from the top two.

I have to disagree w/ anyone daring to put Daddy Dz in the discussion. Their ribs are horrible! However they do have delicious polish sausages.
Harold’s BBq in Atl isn’t that good either. But their Brunswick Stew is the best this side of Brunswick, GA.
Overall, in my opinion there are many good bbq places in GA but even our best does not compare w/ the best in Texas, KC, St. Lou, Bama and KY. Too many GA ‘que spots go overboard w/ the ketchup based sauce. I can not stand ketchup based sauces. That’s why the worst bbq I’ve ever had is This Is It. Their sauce is sickening. If you get their ribs, tell them to hold the sauce and put your own on it when you get home…you’ll thank me later!

Whoever said the GA Pig in Brunswick was the best must not be from the Brunswick area. Anyone who lives in the Brunswick area knows that the GA Pig is terrible - fatty chunks of pork on stale buns. The best in Brunswick is Allen’s BBQ - 2 locations, both great food. Also it is not called the Still on St. Simons (that’s the liquor store in front of it). It’s called Beachcomber BBQ. I love Dreamland and despise JR’s BBQ - it’s always dry and average at best. …but I do like JR’s for breakfast food. Oatmeal with brown suga’ and raisins is awesome.
Dreamland is good but not within 2 hours of closing time — you are getting BBQ that’s been sitting if you go that route.

The best BBQ “was” Hodges on Candler Road in Decatur..(their closed now, hopefully they will re-open in my lifetime). Daddy D’z (Memorial & Hill St) is okay. The best place to go now (until something else tickles my fancy) is Srgt. Wyatts Diner (Memorial & Maynard Terrace). Small truck in lot..but it’s good and pocket friendly. Honorable mention goes to Chef Pete’s in Norcross (call before hand to see what their “out” off).

I love Pig ‘n Chick in Sandy Springs. It’s a good go-to spot when you’ve got a craving. Vandy’s in Statesboro is great…it’s the only BBQ we ate in college. Oinker’s in Clayton is the place we always go on our way to the lake house (Burton). It’s really good!

I have read your comments and I am disappointed that any of you really believe that there is any real BBQ in Ga.And I really feel sorry for the person that dreamed said NC. These are all cheap imittations of what TRUE BBQ REALLY TASTE like. Everyone that is a true connoisseur knows that you MUST go to Memphis,Tn. to get REAL BBQ. unless I open a spot. Jack’s Old South in Vienna, Ga was the ONLY real BBQ that Ga. Had. Wait on it!

Ms. Ford,
I got news for you Sugar, Arkansas is a southern state. It was one of the states that seceeded from the Union at the beginning of the great Civil War in the 19th century. Arkansas can claim as rich a Civil War heritage as most of the ten other states that joined the short-lived Southern Confederacy, and undoubtedly experienced its share of the war’s violence. At least 771 of the 10,000 battles and skirmishes generated by that conflict bloodied Arkansas soil. Vicious guerrilla warfare also ravaged much of the state, forcing the Union Army to devise successful counterinsurgency techniques that have much to teach today’s American military.
Arkansas also shares its own brand of barbeque tradition. Arkansas barbeque is a blend of Memphis and Texas style barbeques. Our meats are rubbed with our own blend of spices, slow-smoked with mesquite and hickory wood, and then hand sliced or chopped. They are normally served with Arkansas (spicy/tangy) or Texas (spicy/sweet) sauces on the side.
Georgia’s barbeque is excellent, but Arkansas’ barbeque is every bit its equal.

The Smokehouse in Oakwood is the finest barbeque in Georgia. They also have banana pudding that would make grandma ashamed to take hers out of the oven. Heavy’s Barbeque down in Talliferro County has some good eatin’ too, and the Barbeque Shack in Toccoa’s not bad. I’ve never eaten at the places listed on the author’s list.

Georgia is seriously lacking in the quality ‘cue department. I grew up in Chattanooga, TN, where bbq is done right. Off of the top of my head, I can name 3 places that blow the doors off all GA competition. FYI, Sugar’s isn’t one of them. They chop, and don’t pull the pork. For shame. The truly good ones are Rib-n-Loin, Master Blasters (great ribs), and Sportsmans BBQ. Atlanta being the northern city that it is just cannot compete.

For all of you who love North Carolina barbeque, I have only one thing to say. The pulled pork is great the vinegar and red pepper sauce spoils it. Sauce is a personal preference. To me, Memphis style hot and spicy tomato sauce is the best. If it clears your sinuses, it’s hot enuf. If it don’t, it ain’t!

In my 48 years in this great state, my number one ranking goes to White Diamond Grill in Bonaire, a few miles south of Warner Robins at the intersection of highways 247 & 96. The same family has owned and operated this joint since 1949. I ate there every week as a kid in the 1960’s. I have moved about 50 miles away; however, I still return a few times a year to eat there. Cooked over hickory and oak, the shredded pork is complimented with a mustard/vinegar sauce. Fresh cut tater fries make a meal there out of this world.

I have yet to find outstanding BBQ in GA. I have been to Old South in Smyrna, nothing special. Wallace BBQ in Powder Springs…I don’t see why its packed…Williamson Bros in Marietta, the food was burnt to a crisp, but the sauce is great and unique… Poole’s BBQ in East Ellijay which was cooked well and flavorful, is a colorful place, and the staff is very friendly but the sauce was runny and too vinegary. Sam & Dave’s is OK but not so that I would go out of the way. So, that leaves me at Sonny’s wow, is that a shocker or what.

I loved Lewis Grizzard but he was only half right about BBQ- Sprayberry’s in Newnan is great, Harolds- not so good.
The best BBQ in Georgia is 1)Finchers in Macon; 2)Fresh Air in Jackson 3)Scotts in Cochran and 4)Pecks in Ocilla. Old Clinton BBQ in Clinton, between Gray and Macon, deserves Honorable Mention.
If you want good Brunswick stew, you are out of luck, because I have never bought any as good as my Mama’s, Iverlene Williams Arnold in Cochran.

If you want the best BBQ you have to go to Eastern North Carolina. Most BBQ here in GA is drowning in sauce (NOT GOOD EATS). Since I can’t go back to NC that often I just make my own.
Good BBQ is easy to make. A couple of Boston Butts slow roasted on the smoker for approx 16 hours and a good dry rub is all you need.

Parker’s BBQ (Sylvester GA - Worth County)is by far - hands down The best BBQ in the State of Georgia. None of this gas grill (suburban crap) - it’s the real deal and it’s not drowned in sauce. Ribs, chicken, you name it. Don’t take my word, if you’re down in Southwest GA, (Sylvester is between Albany and Tifton) or if you traveling to Florida, you might as well get off I-75 in Tifton and drive 20 miles to Sylvester and try it out. Perry will take good care of you.

FRESH-AIR in Jackson and Macon is second to NONE!!! Milear’s is absolute garbage and survives on reputation alone. Jim and Nick’s? Sorry, but chain BBQ doesn’t compete with the family owned establishment. Wallace, in AUSTELL, has been solid for years. Mountain Man in Flowery Branch is also outstanding. But, trust me Fresh-air will ruin all other BBQ once you taste it!

I’m originally from the midwest and could not wait to try BBQ down here in the south and man have I been disappointed. I remember reading an article written by Lewis Grizzard about Sprayberry’s and drove there from Smyrna and was just dumbfounded. How in the world is Sprayberry’s considered good BBQ? I guess perhaps if you just don’t know any better same goes for BBQ at Sonny’s and Harolds. Do the pit masters understand the concept of seasoning at either of these two places. Don’t waste your time or money. Now I’m an adventuresome sort and have tried Q at many places around Georgia: DADDY Z’S -forgettable Pig ‘N CHICK-forgettable FATT MATT’S-Ribs are average at best, but greasy. They don’t trim their ribs before boiling them. I guess it’s considered good eats to those who have not have exceptional bbq before. DREAMLAND-not worth the drive. forgettable OLD SOUTH- forgettable WILLIAMS BROS- average at best, don’t understand the hype. SHANE’s- forgettable, sauce is too sweet. JJ’s RIB SHACK- Not worth the 2+ hour wait, ever. CHAMP’s-below average, save your money. ATLANTA RIB CO-forgettable SMOKEY BONE’S-without the sauce, ribs lacks depth of flavor. KC PITT BBQ- Nothing to write home about. JIM N’NICKS-Ribs are average, brisket is pretty good. Pulled pork is descent. Fried chicken fingers are the best thing going and cooked to order. FAMOUS DAVE’s- Ribs are excellent with or without the sauce, pulled pork is pretty good, bbq chicken wings are excellent.
To me BBQ has two components: seasoned meat and the sauce. Like cake and frosting, sure you could have one without the other, but together, if done right by the right hands=heaven. Ribs seasoned correctly and smoked on a big green egg with homemade bbq sauce will beat each and everyone of these restaurants hands down everytime.

I live in Augusta,Ga. And for my money, Sconyer”s BBQ is the best. I worked there, and i love the atmosphere, service, and the food, is out of this world. When you go there, bring your appetite with you. and if you go away hungry, it”s your own fault. They give you big helpings on all their plates. The main plate to get is, their plantation platter. it contains a portion of what is on the menu. Come to Sconyer”s in Augusta, Ga. when you can. You”ll love it

Sconyers is good, large servings. Fox Bros has great pulled pork, Old South is good, I live 3 miles from Williamson Bros and don’t go there. I used to go to Spiced Right in Lilburn, good. I don’t like Pooles. Davis just south of Jasper is good. Sam and Daves is great! Two Brothers used to be good, not any longer. Slopes has closed in Woodstock. Slopes bbq is good, not as good as their chili dogs. When I worked in Columbus 15 yrs ago bbq joints were everywhere! Most were good. OB’s is good. Didn’t like Sprayberry’s last time I went.

Macon Road BBQ in Columbus, GA & Smokey Pig in Phenix City, AL are the best anywhere. Trust me, I’ve been to all the Atlanta area BBQ shacks and none even come close to these two. I’ll make a 100 mile detour to get some cue from either of these establishments. If you’re in Columbus-PC area just stop and ask for directions. Most everyone knows where they are. I recently enjoyed some of the finest ribs I’ve ever had while attending a wedding in Phenix City, Al. They came from Bubba’s BBQ in Tifton. I’ll certainly stop there next time I’m in that part of the country.

Harold’s is good, but I found it strikingly white, in a neighborhood which is otherwise very diverse. Made me a little uncomfortable.

I keep reading about all of these great BBQ joints and how their food was sooooo great. OH, but they’re closed now. Must not have been too good…
Favorite pork sandwich - Old Hickory House off of Lavista or Spiced Right in Lilburn, Favorite stew - City Slickers in Snellville, Favorite ribs - mine at home, Favorite brisket - some joint in Dallas, TX at their West End but if you want a good choice here try Jim & Nick’s.

Sugar’s is almost in GA and it has best offering for BBQ sauces that I have seen. I personally also enjoy some of the uniques sides…cornbread, two great slaws.

I just wanted to give a great big THANK YOU to everyone who recommended Fox Bros. BBQ on Dekalb Ave. I went there for lunch today after reading the reviews and I finally got a taste of GREAT brisket. I recently moved here from TX and have been searching for it since most places either don’t serve it, can’t cook it, or don’t slice/chop it properly. I will definitely be dining there again and again!

Fox Bros on Dekalb Ave is the absolute best. Everything there is great - brisket, wings, pork, ribs, and all the appetizers. Excellent sauce, too.
Fat Matts has pretty good sauce and okay meat - Maddy’s vice versa. KC Pit in Sandy Springs is pretty good, as is Fresh Air in Jackson. But Sprayberry’s is a poor excuse for bbq. And don’t even think about getting their fried peach pie - it’s disgusting.

if you want tasty stew, bodacious pulled pork fresh off the pit, or savory tender ribs i still say the hickory pig in gainesville ga is the best i have found.

Sugar’s Ribs in Chattanooga is worth a trip down the road for exceptional BBQ. There’s a sauce to perfectly compliment each meat whether your favorite is the pork, ribs, brisket or chicken. My family orders some of each to trade around. The corn on the cob is the best and definitely try the grilled onions -even eaten by my husband that will pick onions out of his spaghetti. Sugar’s is our favorite BBQ place because the food tastes so fresh, the beer is ice cold and the staff is always friendly. Don’t miss it if you have the opportunity to go to Chatt. Ditto on Sprayberry’s being disappointing for BBQ. But what did not disappoint there was their cole slaw—really tangy, vinegary—it was the best I’ve ever tasted and worth going back just for that, even if the barbeque was not so great.

And another affirmative for for the Old Clinton Barbeque—it is perhaps the best in GA. Finely chopped pork and their wonderful vinegar-based sauce.

the pink pig is in cherry log ga just north of ellijay. but you are correct they have excellent bbq, beef and pork, a rarity, fantastic onion rings, and even better 18 oz. rib eye steaks. the garlic salad is worth the trip alone.

Being from South Georgia, Miller’s in Morven and JB’s in Beachton are good BBQ.
But the best I have ever had was actually in Columbus OHIO at the PIG BARN. THe place with the Tractor hanging from the rafters.

After seeing the Spiced Right of Roswell mentioned here I decided to try it. I had lunch there last Wednesday. The pulled pork plated was fantastic. I decided to bring my wife back the following Friday even when the blues band would be performing. The band was great! My pulled pork wasn’t very hot but since it had that wonderful flavor I didn’t mind it too much. My wife was concerned that they didn’t have a wait-staff, you had to go to the counter and place your order. She was mad because they weren’t very well organized and let several patrons cut ahead of her. When we were ready to leave she asked for a to-go box and he seemed to be stressed, telling her “they were over by the window”. I’ll go back mainly for the band and the pulled pork.
I now find out that Sam and Daves also have a place just west of the Marietta square. It’s been a year since we tried the one on Lower Roswell Rd so we tried it Tuesday. We’ll now try to schedule a visit to the one west of Marietta.

Hands down the best place is Bub-Ba-Q in Jasper. The guy is one serious bbq cook, he has trophies all over and apparently travels all over doing BBQ competitions. The beef brisket is the best pice of beef I have ever put in my mouth, BBQ or non BBQ beef. They have a new sandwich now that is AWESOME. It is a brisket cheese steak, like a philly cheese on steriods though. You will do yourself a favor by treating yourself to a meal.

By far the best two BBQ places in Georgia are Big John’s Treat Shop in Calhoun, GA and Two Brother Bar B Q in Ball Ground, GA. They are both absolutely amazing! Both have excellent, excellent barbeque! I have been eating and Big John’s Treat Shop since I was a little girl! I love it! Tommy makes the best barbeque around! I have recently discovered Two Brothers but it is a bit of a drive for me! But it is worth it! If you are ever close to either one of these wonderful places, please check them out! They will not disappoint you! Both have wonderful and friendly staff, great BBQ, and Great pies too! Yummy! ;) Don’t forget to try the fries at Two Brothers too! They are GREAT! Oh, and if you are a fan of peanut butter! You should definitely try the peanut butter pie at Big John’s! It is the best! Hope you get a chance to check these places out! I know you will like ‘em! Best Southern barbeque you’ll taste! =)

I believe that the best is in a small town named Darien. It is off of exit 49. The food is wonderful, and the baked beans are to die for! I have yet to find any better baked beans. I would also suggest trying the sweet potato fries and corn nuggets. All of the meat is good! I think ti is definately worth the stop if you are traveling through Georgia.

I am sure they are all good BBQ. The best BBQ I ever had was not at a restaurant. There was a guy that was set up on Hwy 124 in Snellville about 10+ years ago that worked out of a small trailer and he has the best ribs and boston butts I have ever ate. I wish he had opened is own restaurant or that he was still somewhere close as I do not believe he is on Hwy 124 any more. I moved from Snellville about 10 years ago.

I have been trying to find the best BBQ here in the NGa region (Woodstock, Roswell) and it is not easy. I thought that, in GA, this would be a cinch. But I have to agree with another comment above that said that even the worst BBQ places in my hometown, Chicago, are better than the best here (I’d give a limb for Russell’s!) Dreamland was good, but does not seem to be consistent.
I appreciate everyone’s comments and suggestions, and I’ll keep trying.
Peace,

So Full BBQ in Woodstock Georgia is an awesome barbecue joint. It is owned and ran by family. There homemade barbecue sauce is OUTSTANDING…. There was a large variety and all of them were homemade! It just opened within the last few months and is most definitely worth a visit! :) We had the BBQ plate and sandwich with mac and cheese, Brunswick stew, fresh cut fries, and potato wedges. Everything was so good!

My girlfriend and I, Sunday, ate at Poole’s in Ellejay, GA, and both thought it was so salty that the stew and BBQ both were next to inedible. It was sick with salt and we both ended up feeling “gross” the next day… I actually got regurgitated that Sunday evening. I don’t know what happened in the kitchen but our meal was a waste of $25.

Anyone who isn’t from the great state of Georgia should not keep their mouth shut and go eat in their own state! At least you get to eat some BBQ. If Zeb’s was good enough for Dale Earnhardt then it’s good enough for ANYONE. Go there, they have a small tribute to him.
