What’s Your Take on Take Out?

“The smell of good bread baking, like the sound of lightly flowing water, is indescribable in its evocation of innocence and delight.” — M.F.K. Fisher

Friday’s Living section offers my take on takeout ( and EveningEdge.com has an online version, but I left out one obvious option for taking food to go: Alon’s Bakery.

The Morningside maven of all things from the oven finally opened it’s much-awaited second location Tuesday, February 12. Housed in the old Eatzi’s locale, the popular intown bakery has a lot more room OTP — more than 11,000 square feet. Right now the space seems a little sparse and lacks the kitchy, cozy crowdedness of the original, but there are advantages to its size, too.

For one thing, there’s room for gelati making, and since the closing of owner Alon and Janine Balshan’s Scoops a while back, the city has been aching for a really good ice cream spot. As with his breads and pastries, Alon is a master at making gelati and sorbetti. The pristine station located in the center of the room is a welcoming harbinger of all good tastes to come, flanked on the back side by a chocolate praline station.

Another great addition is the glass encasement of the bakery, where a gigantic work bench is visible and you can actually watch the bakers roll out dough and shape the breads.

And the cheese selection seems almost twice the size as the Morningside location. There’s also room for fresh-cut flowers and a larger wine area. If I lived in the area, I’d frequent this Alon’s often. And of course the sandwiches and prepared foods are ready for their closeups.

What’s you take on takeout? Do you have a favorite take out spot? What types of food do you like to get to go?

I live in north Buckhead and so Alon’s OTP is much easier for me to get to than the original location.

I’ve been lamenting the demise of Eatzi’s for so long they could have put a Sunbeam bread factory in there and I would have cheered.

But I didn’t have to settle for mediocre sandwich slices, thankfully.

I’ve been waiting for Alon’s OTP to open for months now - and just happened in there last week on opening day! Of course I walked out with dinner (a fantastic roast beef sandwich) and a country french loaf the likes of which I’ve never eaten before.

You’re right - it seems a bit “open” compared to the original location but hey - that just means more walkin-around room. :)

And in warmer months, the gelato-orium is going to be cool! (Get it?)

Beef Stix in Tucker on Lawrenceville is a newer eatery, either take out or eat-in, of Southeast Asian cuisine. The place is unassuming and small, but very clean, and their food is much tastier and more aromatic than the usual run-of-the-mill Chinese. Everything from their lemon grass chicken to the ahmok to their appetizers is lovinglly hand-prepared. They also have the best fo and masaman coconut curry I have ever tasted. They marinate their beef and chicken for their main dishes, and the result is unbelieveable tenderness and taste. Their angel wings appetizer is chicken wings stuffed with pork, shrimp, clear noodles, crab meat and green onions. Yum!

We love to get take out from our favorite eat-in restaurants and go home to enjoy dinner and relax. Some of our faves are Teds Montana Grill, Wasabi in Castleberry Hill, Longhorns, Little Bangkok, Mulans and can’t forget MoJoes wings!

The Shack on Main in East Point has really good BBQ. When Leon is smoking meat, it smells so good that I swear my car turns in there on its own.

Marcy you must work at Beef Stix. I’ve driven by there several times and there is hardly any indication that an actual restaurant is operating in that space other than the sign that says what is is. Beef Stix? The name is not exactly appetizing and there is no indication of what in the world is going on in there or what kind of food they serve. On the other hand, the greek place that opened up down the street, Grecian Corner, has been welcomed with open arms. I can’t get enough greek salad, grilled pita bread and tzatziki sauce. And they actually sell the sauce by the bottle which I have never heard of before but have dreamed of happening for many years. Of course none of it is really good for you so i eat in moderation, as they recommend on their sign, “Go Greek Once A Week!” that is now my weekly food splurge.

In Marietta, if you want bar-b-que take out, Williamson Brothers kicks Sam and Dave’s in the arse. Inside slice boston butt covered with their nationally available sauce is outstanding. Cole slaw is daily fresh, and endless texas toast. The home made pies are awsome. Try the Chocolate Pie…emmmmmmmmmmmm. Believe it or not, they have the best Salmon fillet in Marietta….at a bar-b-que joint! Who the heck are Sam and Dave? It’s Larry and Danny Williamson for Bar-B-Que in Marietta! Just down the street from the Big Chicken!

I could not disagree with Flower more. Sam and Dave know what they are doing. Williamson’s is so so. I cook on the Memphis competitive bbq circuit and if you really want good que S & D’s is the best around. Although nobody smokes it as well as the competition smokers.

CJ’s hotdogs in Mcdonough has the best hotdogs around. They toast their buns and it makes the hotdogs wonderful. They also have fresh cut fries that taste great. They sell Chicago Dogs, and specialty dogs such as Texas dogs w/ coleslaw, barbecue sauce and a pickle. Sounds crazy but it tastes great. Try them on Jonesboro Rd in Mcdonough Ga

In Henry County - the best place to eat something quick is CJ’S Hotdogs on Jonesboro Rd. They have great hot dogs - and they toast the buns and it makes all the difference in the taste. Turns a quick hotdog into a great meal.
