Heart-shaped pizzas: Lovable or lame?

So it’s come to this. Short on energy and time, my family is going to eat takeout pizza on Valentine’s Day. So much for trying to make it special; we’re just phoning it in.

And apparently we’re not alone. Papa John’s is serving heart-shaped pizzas through Feb. 17 in honor of Valentine’s Day. Mangia of Austin, Texas, which ships frozen deep-dish Chicago style pizzas around the country, also offers a specially shaped pie, in spinach, pepperoni or veggie versions. So somebody must be ordering them. (Not us; we’re picking up from the excellent Blue Moon Pizza in Smyrna.)

When the moon hits your eye like a big heart-shaped pizza pie, that’s amore … or at least a gimmick that pumps up pizza sales and quells any worries about garlic breath.

Has anyone tried the Papa John’s heart-shaped pizza yet (it’s been available all week)?

What’s the most romantic Valentine’s meal you’ve ever eaten? The lamest?

Living between Mellow Mushroom and Fellini’s leaves little chance of a chain pizza ever being the pizza of choice. But the idea of a heart shaped pizza is clever, and I’m sure it’s a hit with the kids. As far as the most romantic Valentine’s dinner, nothing in particular comes to mind. Bad service received on 2 different Valentine’s dinners out comes to mind. One place is no longer in business, but the other place is part of a large, popular Buckhead group of restaurants.

Mellow Mushroom sucks. I was once a franchisee. They have a corporate lawyer running the show for what once was a great company. Please support your local independent pizzerias.

Hmmm, well I can hardly type it fast enough -

the lamest by far was stopping to get something to eat at Shoney’s on the way home (after “fishing” from the bank of a private lake…..with my then boyfriend, along with bf’s ex-step-nephew & the ex-step-nephew’s bratty 4 yr old daughter). it was the anti-valentine’s from you know where. it wasn’t just dinner that was lame - it was the entire day! as if the choice of restaurants wasn’t bad enough, the service was horrible!

most memorable is tougher - I’ve had a lot of fantastic dining experiences in & around Atlanta - not just on Valentine’s day.

I’d have to vote “Lame” - but only if bought from a pizza joint. If someone were to make me a pizza at home on Valentine’s Day and it happened to be heart shaped, I’d probably think it was sweet.

Best Valentine’s Day? Three years ago my then boyfriend surprised me with a trip to New Orleans. We had Valentine’s Day supper at Brigtsens Click Here For Link, and it was fantastic. Romantic and refined, with REALLY tasty vittles. :)

To reserviorDAWG, that’s cool that you don’t like Mellow Mushroom, but for me, they make a delicious pie. I’m all for supporting an independent, but there’s really not one anywhere around me that I know of. Any suggestions to any ITP?

Critic Unfortunately it has been many years since I lived ITP. What I do in my area(John’s Creek) is gamble. I have found some outstanding independents, but then again this blows up in my face sometimes.

I odered the Papa John’s heart shaped pizza to be delivered at my husband’s work place…I thought it was a great idea! He loved it but it was smaller than I thought it would be… Not sure what we are doing tonight, though.

BiteMe If you like pizza made with frozen dough made off site, then I guess Mellow is the “best pizza ever.” As for me I like independent locally owned pizzarias. If any of you want a truly great slice go to Mama’s on Old Milton Pkwy.

Critic try Savage Pizza in L5P.

And Fellini’s isn’t a franchise…not yet. They have locations around Atlanta but I think they’re all owened by one owner.

Well, sorry, but Mellow Mushroom is still the best! But thanks for the tip, I will have to try Mama’s - Never even heard of it before :)

I think Mellow Mushroom is OK but not better than Fellini’s… I find it a little bland.

The best pizza ever comes out of a local chain in Baton Rouge, LA called D’Angelo’s.

Cosmo’s Little Italy in historic downtown Lawrenceville is THE place to go for great pizza.

The last 3 times I got pizza out (2 Mellow, 1 Alessio’s) the crust was black burnt on bottom……I have always been a fan of Mellow since 1977! (OK I am old). I love the Esperanza though!

Fellini’s is ok..yes just ok….I was never thrilled with it.

I will have to Google Mama’s and check them out.

Uno out of Chicago has great pizza.

Most memorable Valentine dinner out? Hmmmm its just that not big a deal at our house.

sorry for the double post. i just remembered i had a valentine’s day dinner at vintage pizzeria a few years ago when they had a special 3 course meal that night. they have a great wine list as well and a full bar with a giant HD screen on the side of the restaurant that is “adults only”. the other side is for families.

jen, I’m fairly sure that Fellini;s sold out to some corporate entity. The first clue was when I heard Elton John being played on the sound system. An overhaul of the restaurants themselves including paint jobs and less funky surroundings is another. And the last clue was the acceptance of credit cards. Thank goodness they haven’t screwed up the recipe. MJ Pippen when they were around was pretty tasty. But from what I can remember, back in the day, Gigi’s was the best.

Critic, thanks for mentioning M.J. Pippin’s. I still remember how good their pizzas were. And Pippin’s across from Georgia Tech, with their “garbage” pizza, with Swiss cheese and a ton of other stuff. I never made it to GIgi’s.

Blue Moon Pizza was excellent, as always, last night. We got the white pizza, with artichoke hearts, red onions and what looked like basil leaves, but were spinach according to the menu.

I love Mellow and eat there pretty often if I am going to eat pizza on my cheat day, but I still love Shakey’s Pizza. I am from the West Coast and it just didn’t get any better than that there.

V-day dinner? I don’t think that “dinner” has been the first thing on my mind, but I can recall some nice bottles of wine, music and candles.
Let’s face it, there generally is college basketball on TV that night and what could be better than pizza, beer and a b-ball game with the person you love.

Elwood’s Pizza is the best in Brookhaven. Beats out Mellow Mushroom in my book and a shorter waiting time. I guess it’s because they don’t have to defrost the dough. My most romantic Valentine’s Day dinners are when me and my boyfriend cook a great dinner together. Last night was two juicy rib eyes from Whole Foods with mashed potatoes, spinach salad and a great bottle of red wine.
