Red Velvet Revelations

It’s a bit of urban legend that attributes the origin of red velvet cake to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York, where it was popular in the 1920s. Much like the Neiman-Marcus cookie myth, it’s unlikely that this ruby red cocoa cake, so lauded in the South, originated there.

Growing up Southern, it was my favorite birthday cake (though my mother often colored the cream cheese frosting purple, since that was my favorite color). I noticed my friends from Chicago, New York and New England had rarely ever heard of it, though. But about five to ten years ago, red velvet cake began to take hold all over the country. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lahey had one for their wedding cake (well, probably not such a good sign now that I think of it). And that’s a red velvet cake shaped like an armadillo for a groom’s cake in “Steel Magnolias.”

Suddenly, RVC was showing up everywhere — and it still is. My favorite in Atlanta? The simple version at Sweet Auburn Bread Company on Auburn Ave. or a slice from A Piece of Cake in Roswell or Buckhead. I’m working on an upcoming RVC piece for the AJC’s food section and I want to know: Where do you think the best red velvet cake in Atlanta is?

Though most people don’t go there looking for the food (but more should), the huge red velvet cupcake at the Georgia Aquarium food court gets my vote. The cake is moist, the frosting not overly sweet, and the ratio of cake to frosting is just right.

My family, most originally from Illinois, has been making this cake for many years, starting with my grandmother, who is in her 80s. She passed on her recipe to my mom, who made a red velvet cake for my Groomsman’s Cake at my wedding. She has passed on the recipe to my wife, who made red velvet cupcakes this year for my birthday. I have yet to find one in a local place that is as good - but that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped looking!

Cake is quite possibly my favorite dining topic! I have a special place in my heart for Red Velvet Cake because I brought it to a party and ate a very big slice the night my first child was conceived! That particular one came from Metrotainment Bakeries (think Garrison’s, Cowtippers, Hudson Grille). Other fine bakeries where I’ve sampled this delicious delight include Southern Sweets in Decatur, The Fickle Pickle in Roswell and the Cake Company, who had the honors of doing my wedding cake however we didn’t have red velvet.

The Fickle Pickle on Canton St. in Roswell makes a great Red Velvet Cupcake that my 19 year old son, Dylan, swears is the best around!

You might be surprised to learn that California Pizza Kitchen has a really good RVC on its menu as of very recently. White chocolate vanilla bean icing and moist, chocolatey cake are a pleasant surprise from this gourmet pizza joint.

RVC is truly a southern tradition and I have some very good and very dry RVC in my life but I must honestly admit one of the best places to get RVC is Piccadilly I’m not sure whose grandmother is in the kitchen but if shes not her recipe is.

Its not quite Atlanta, but Cecelia’s Bakery in Athens has wonderful red velvet cake. It’s really moist and the cream cheese frosting is subtle overwhelming. You can get it by the slice at downtown eateries, like Last Resort or buy a whole cake directly from CeCelias.

You’ve got to try Little European Bakery in Sandy Springs. They make a GREAT red velvet cake with cream sheese icing and they just introduced a nice sized cupcake for only $2.00. FYI, the red velvet cake you get at Nordstrom’s Cafe in Perimeter Mall comes from this bakery.

I had some red velvet cake at a Starbucks in Newnan that was quite good but my mother’s recipe is the one that gets raves. We actually printed it on little cards, with her photo, and handed it out at her memorial service. The secret: Pouring a combination of sugar and milk, heated until near boiling, over the layers BEFORE they are frosted. It is yummy!!

By far, far, far, the best red velvet cake I have tasted, which is really in the form of a cupcake, comes from The Lunch Box in downtown Lawrenceville. The cake is super moist and tasty and the cream cheese frosting is absolutely heavenly. Everytime I bite into one, I just close my eyes and think how ridiculoously good this cupcake is.

My favorite dessert place in Atlanta (Chocolate Pink in Midtown at the 905 Juniper building) just added red velvet cupcakes to their menu and they are amazing! The cake is so moist, and the cream cheese icing is better than any other I’ve had. Chocolate Pink is definitely my favorite place for red velvet in Atlanta now!

I am a connoisseur of all things Bread Pudding or Red Velvet. In all my investigative research…believe or not..The DeKalb Farmer’s Market has the best RVC I have found. You can get a slice for about $1.60 or a whole cake $9.00. Try It!

The best red velvet cake (cupcakes) I have ever tasted is from a restaurant in downtown Lawrenceville called The Lunch Box. In the past red velvet was red velvet, but these red velvet cupcakes are the best Atlanta has to offer. The lunch box is to red velvet, what Michael Jordan was to Chicago and Miracle Whip is to a sandwich, a great and unforgettable combination.
