Steak Out

I’ve never quibbled about where my favorite place for steak is — Bones. That type of statement can get you into trouble in a city where steak is more popular than fried chicken and biscuits.
For me, the steaks at Bones are great things of beauty — my favorite cut is their bone-in ribeye. Just finished a meal there this week and they are offering a new cut, a bone-in New York strip, which was almost as delectable as the ribeye, but not quite as marbled and juicy.
Couple the charred perfection of the steaks with a few grit fritters, some sauteed spinach and the colossal, sweet shrimp in a shrimp cocktail (plus that deep wine list), and Bones offers up one of the most hedonistic meals around. Plus there’s a free juke box, and it plays everything from the Zombies to Tony Bennett amidst all those kooky caricatures on the walls. You can’t beat this experience.
With so many steak houses to choose from, where do you go for a great steak?

The high end steak houses are very nice, no question. The excellent service and the elegance of the experience is very rich. But I’m always asking myself afterward; was it really worth it? My taste is that the perfect steak is grilled over coals, not broiled in an oven or cooked over a gas flame. And a high-end steak house that cooks over coals does not exist to my knowledge. So in order to get to the topic, I’m afraid that over the last several years, in the high end category, I have only visited Morton’s, The Capital Grille, and Bone’s. In my experience with the 3, I think I would be hard pressed to tell the difference if I were blindfolded. However, the crab cakes at Morton’s are outstanding. Ultimately, if I want a great steak, I cook it myself on my Weber Smokey Joe. If I don’t feel like cooking, I usually just go to Longhorn. Cheyenne Grill and Cowtippers are pretty good too.

Actually a chain: Bugaboo Creek…unless my brother is over…then have him go cook my steak…then again, he is a manager for the chain.

Houston’s at Paces is always good for a steak, ceasar, and of course the Chicago Style Spinach Dip. However, for the price these days I would just as soon stay home and make it myself…..Publix has very nice cuts.

The best steak I’ve ever eaten in my life was a Prime grade filet mignon from Publix on 12/18/04. I wish they sold Prime graded beef on a regular basis.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, beef! Can you say “mad cow disease”!!
Some steakhouses do, however, have great seafood.

Was in Zurrich last March. Two filets and two glasses of wine…$180.00 plus tip. Yikes and Gadzooks, Switzerland is EXPENSIVE. It was good but $180.00 good.

The best place to go for a great steak is my own back yard. My husband makes the best steak I’ve had and I’ve eaten at restaurants from Atlanta to Las Vegas (currently living in the Nashville area). He also makes killer sauteed mushrooms and a baked potato you will never find on any restaurant menu. We have this meal every Friday regardless of the weather. I get the steaks cut fresh (2” thick) at the Kroger meat counter, he’s the NY strip and I’m the ribeye.

The New York Strip has morer marble than a Ribeye, everyone knows that. It’s is a physiological fact. As for Steakhouses I think the best around is at Golden Coral. Mrs. Ford thanks for letting us tell you. You are my favorite writer!!! I hate to say it but the thin little porter house at Waffle House is hard to beat. Don’t tell anyone I said that. All the Best….

Longhorn always has a good filet. But my husband makes a mean steak from Fresh Market, little dales and thats all it takes!

JJ - If you actually think that a NY strip is more marbled than a ribeye, you are incorrect.

Good steak is only as good as the quality of the beef. It quite rare that peple are dissapointed with a choice fillet but in prime rib or a n.y. strip if it is prime i usually am not dissapointed where i eat those. When i lived in NY. and Miami i did enjoy meals at the argentinian restaurants the meat was a little gamey but underpriced and i usually enjoyed eating here.

Wow, you eat steaks and loaded potatoes every week? No wonder Americans are so damn huge. Moderation, folks. Steaks are yummy but don’t eat them regularly, unless you want to look fat and develop health problems at 60.
