What are You Eating Christmas Eve?

My family has a long tradition of eating out on Christmas Eve — usually at an El Toro. Our brood of 15 or so orders lots of nachos and enchiladas, drinks our share of beer and often ends the meal singing “Winter Wonderland” loudly (but not off key) until it’s time to go help Santa.

We’ve been creating this holiday mayhem for about 15 years. What restaurant traditions do you share with friends or loved ones on Christmas Eve?

My mom will be cooking a terrific Nochebuena dinner at my house for everyone in our family. Altogether, there will be almost twenty people over to enjoy the food and open presents from the family. Our food will include Colombian empanadas and tamales, Puerto Rican pasteles, lechon, arroz con gandules, bacalaitos, bunelos, bread pudding, tembleque, and flan. It is quite a feast!

Corey, Sounds great. My daughter had a friend Carla whose parents especially her Dad who was a chef cooked empanadas, and tamales and other Peruvian dishes; she said that they were so great; Are you Corey Carla’s brother? she had a brother named Corey I believe. Anyway, we will have the traditional ham and turkey with all of the trimmings; some like ham some like turkey. But I will never be able to make my Mom’s wonderful cornbread stuffing/dressing; it was the best. In Heaven, she must be teaching others to make it - smile. Have a great Christmas everyone.

My sister and her family stay up late and open all of their gifts. Then around mid-night or 1AM they go to Waffle House. Scattered and Covered is Christmas tradition for them.
