Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Well, sort of anyway.

Dropped by Chocolate Bar in Decatur with a friend a few cold nights back and they were serving — to my surprise — a gluhwien, that delightfully muddled mix of red wine and spices so popular in parts of Germany and Austria. Their hot chocolate rocks, too — a not-too-thick ganache-like cup of warmth topped with house-made marshmallows.

Who’s got the best hot drinks in town?

You have to buy the stuff and make this at home, but Williams-Sonoma apple cider with their mulling spices is to die for. It’s crazy expensive so I grabbed the generic Kroger stuff this afternoon and my house smells fantastic and I’m sitting out on the front porch in the crisp air with a nice, hot cup of mulled cider.

The Buena Vista - a great bar at the end of the Market Street trolly route next to Fisherman’s Warf in San Francisco. Best Irish Coffees in the world (one of the two disputed places where they were first served in the US). They serve so many that the bartender puts the glasses rim to rim “3-stooges style” when pouring the coffee.

But enjoy the same at home tonight.

Make coffee. Take heavy cream, a dash of vanilla, and a tsp. of sugar and whip until thick, but pourable.

Put 1 shot of Irish Wiskey (Bushmills is good, others will do) into the bottom of a Irish coffee mug (yes, designed just for the task) or other clear mug. Put in 1 tsp. of sugar (or brown sugar for a richer taste). Pour in the coffee leaving about 3/4 of an inch at the top for the whipped cream. Mix the coffee well to dissolve the sugar. Add the whipped cream gently and enjoy.

And keep that Creme de Menthe the hell away. The thing doesn’t have to be green to be Irish - mint does not go with this drink.

Enjoy.
