Sweet potato pie or pumpkin pie?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In this week’s Saving Southern Food recipe, contributor Eris Cosby Lancaster of Powder Springs talks about her grandmother, who, among other things, grew her own sweet potatoes for her sweet potato pie. After her grandmother’s death, family members shared a copy of the recipe and continue to make it at Thanksgiving. Another Thanksgiving dessert of similar character, pumpkin pie, is just as traditional for many people. What’s the tradition in your family? Do you prefer one over the other?

My mother would make a sweet potato souffle and put it inside of a orange peel half. Raisins would be in the potatoes and a marshmallo baked on top so that it was nice and crusty. For dessert, we would always have a choice of either mince meat or pumpkin pie. I loved it all.

My preference is pumpkin, no doubt. It’s “more special” I suppose because you don’t really have it year round. There’s sweet potato everything nowadays, from fries to pies to souffles, but not that much pumpkin.
My family doesn’t really have a tradition (unless you count my Great Aunt Maggie’s personal homemade wine recipe that my Dad now has) other than Grandma making a pecan pie - with chopped pecans and sugarcane syrup.

My mother bakes a sweet potato pie that will make you crazy!!! We all love sweet potatoes, I especially like them baked, with butter, YUM!!!
My daughter (15) bakes cakes that are insanely good, too! There’s Chocolate Delight, Almond Cream, Coconut, Lemon Cream…all from scratch……I’m getting hungry!!

Sweet ‘tater pie is ab fab. My mother used to get me to try and eat her pumpkin and her sweet potato pies, but I never would eat them. When I moved out and went to college, I was very low on money and a friend invited me to Thanksgiving one year…. I ended up taking a plate home with me and a whole pie (I took it because I felt guilty, and they insisted…)A day later, I was starving again, and I reached into the lil fridge and pulled out the pie and realized at that moment how smart my mother was. It was delicious, and I have loved both pies ever since that day! One note: Eating a whole pie is not good for you!

Nobody, not even Grandma, makes a better Pumpkin Pie than the Tootie Pie Company, a little pie company located in Texas. Don’t believe me, ask John T. Edge.

Sweet Potato Souffle is part of the main course on my mother’s table….and I look forward to it so much that on the few occassions she was not able to be with me on Thanksgiving, she made it up in the pan and I had me bake it for the dinner.
Thanksgiving would not be the same with out that and her Pecan Pie with fresh whipped cream on top! YUM!!!!
She didn’t feel like making the pie last year, and because of my disappointment…she made one and brought it by house over the weekend.
Now that may be more a testimony to a Mom’s love than to her baking…but I am glad to have her and the food!
