Should raw milk be dyed to discourage drinkers?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Raw milk is either a dangerous source of bacteria or one of the most wholesome foods around, depending on whether you’re talking to health officials or to people who cherish the unpasteurized milk for its fresh-from-the-farm appeal.
For years, an underground industry has operated in Georgia, selling raw milk labeled as pet food to people who reserved it for themselves, not Fido or Fluffy. Until now, the Georgia Department of Agriculture has tolerated the practice as long as the milk was labeled for pet use.
Not anymore. (Read my AJC story about proposed changes.) Following in the footsteps of North Carolina, the Georgia agriculture department is proposing a rule change that will require the milk be dyed to discourage consumers from drinking it. That comes after several Murray County residents were sickened this summer with campylobacter traced to raw milk.
Should the government be able to alter food to make it unappetizing to discourage sales to protect public health? Or should consumers have the right to decide what they and their children will drink?

I think the government needs to keep their nose out of it. There is such a thing as personal choice. We do not need this nanny government to constantly look out for us like we’re a bunch of children. There used to be a time in this country when people had the courage to stand up and say mind your own business. I miss those days.

Phooey on those people who think their money is best spent on stupid tactics such as this. We love raw dairy, and will continue to ingest it. My family, including two children, have been loving our raw milk and cheeses for three years now - all from South Carolina farms - and I’d bet we’re healthier than you government types who hate anything that does not prosper their wallet. Phooey.

Absolutely! And while they’re at it, why don’t they put giant, flashing lights on top of tall staircases, caution tape around manholes, and cover car bumpers in pillows?
This is one of the dumbest ideas on Earth. Let people eat what they want to eat. If it kills them, oh well, more good food for the rest of us.

I think drinking raw milk is stupid. But I will defend your right to drink it!
We don’t require that all meat be irradiated, or require that private wells be chlorinated.
Raw milk should be properly labeled, that’s all.
Then again, this could be an attempt by the dairy lobby to get preteen boys to drink more milk—make anything look yucky (“dirt cakes” with worms, green ketchup, the Queasy Bake Oven, etc.) and little boys will eat/drink it up.

Don’t we live in enough of a Nanny state already? What is next. Will it be illegal to eat vegetables you grow yourself for fear you won’t properly treat them and you might wind up with E-Coli? If you want to knowingly buy and drink raw unpastuerized milk from a farm it should be your choice. This is ridiculous.

Get real!! Our goverment feeds us pesticides, dyes, preservatives and a multitude of other things that have been linked to cancer. Read the label on sweet n low for one if you don’t believe me. Therefore if someone wishes to drink raw milk the most the goverment should do is put a warning label on it.

The only thing that needs milk from a cow is a baby calf. Those that want to drink milk from another species should just have to get on their hands and knees and suck the nipples of whatever it is they want the milk from. Human babies need breast milk….then they don’t ever need dairy again. Milk is full of blood and puss from inside the cow’s breast…raw milk has more of it….sure it’s healthier…for the baby cow! Milk and dairy products are harmful to humans….ever wonder why vegetarians never have cholesterol problems, high blood pressure, never get colon cancer (build up in colon from eating meat). So go ahead…drink up….but oh…first get on your knees and suck…be carefull so mommy cow doesn’t kick ya! She know’s it’s not normal for you to want to drink her milk! :-)

Let these freaks drink the milk anyway way they want…….who the heck said we need to drink milk from a fat nasty cow anyway? Who the heck ever thought of it……..Many other ways to get calcium and nutrition. I think poor people back in the day sucked on cow nipples to get thier food.

I feel very strongly that the goverment needs to keep there hands out of it. If I choose to drink the milk, I have the right to do so in a free country. Putting a dye, to discourage consumption is just downright stupid. If an adult is willing to take a risk on the slight possibility, a very slight possiblility, of becoming ill after consumption that is a risk that is completely up to the individual. Why not put dye in cigarettes, lets say to make the smokers lips green to discourage smoking…Please…keep your dirty goverment out of my white free range happy milk!!!

If your kids get sick from it then yes we should do something about it. If adults are doing it who cares.

Can you say “Warning label”. Come on give me a break… Why do we think our almighty goverment has our BEST interest in mind. Wake up people!

Seems to me the greedy hands of the government could be doing this because they don’t see a self serving profit in raw milk for themselves. People have been drinking raw milk for ages.

When I eat a steak, it’s full of blood, too.
I’m a PETA member too-People Eating Tasty Animals (aka People for the Edible Treatment of Animals)
Most vegetarians I know are fat and unhealthy from eating ridiculous amounts of carbs…remember, vegetarianism means you eat pasta and pizza with vegan cheeze. It does not mean you actually eat vegetables.
If PETA had their way, drinking any kind of cow’s milk would be a crime. In other words, the government would see fit to use force, DEADLY force if necessary, to prevent you from drinking milk.
That is NOT the kind of government I pay taxes for!

I am sick and tired of the government trying to impose their will on everything I do. This is not about milk, it’s about control and we’ve already got way too much of it. If Tommy Irwin wants to do something useful, he can take his tired old self back to Mount Airy and let a more conservative person try to help Georgia’s agri-business recover from all of the harm he’s done.
We don’t need any more government in any facet of our lives. We need to fight it every where we can so go tell Mr. Irwin what we think of his stupid gray dye.
BTW, I no longer drink “raw” milk, but I’m 60 years old and was raised on it. I’m sure pasteurized milk is safer, but we should be allowed to do what we want unless we’re hurting someone else.

Do you really think changing the color of the milk is going to deture the community of people who drink this milk? Think about this for a second people. These are people who were eating organic food when the rest of us thought a health food store was just a giant size head shop set up for Grateful Dead groupies. We have free speech we should also have free eat! Them them have what they want man! Power to the people!

Be careful about the camel nose under the tent. Do you really want them dyeing white bread blue, so that you will eat whole wheat bread? Given that the raw milk is identified as “for pets only”, the consumer is on their own. If the government is responsible for your health, then they will be able to remove your children if you feed them junk food. They are already removing children of raw vegan parents. Why stop there? Are you willing to submit to the government’s demands on how you raise your children? If so, then welcome to slavery!

All that should be required is a warning label. Using dye as a deterrent is just plain stupid. If persons want to drink raw milk, just make sure there’s a label warning them of the possible consequences-just like the one in menus warning you of consuming raw or undercooked eggs and meat.

discourage sales to protect public health?
Since when does the government really care about public health? This bs is done for one reason only -to protect corporate profits. There are thousands of people who get sick every year from conventional meat, dairy and produce. Yet this fact is barely ever mentioned. However, when raw and organic food gets a few people sick, we can’t hear enough about it. Let’s stop eating anything fresh and raw and start living of ‘Healthy Choice’, potato chips, and coke. This way we’ll be safe.

More people die or get sick from taking FDA endorsed and peddled pharmaceutical products, and USDA approved and inspected fast food restaurants, USDA approved meats in grocery stores and the like in ONE year than have been sickened by any wholesome raw food products combined in the last ten years. Our immune systems are compromised by a lack of regular exposure to the normal bacteria in the world around us because 99% of what we eat is dead, fortfied, processed junk and our bodies no longer have a healthy defense response system.
Grass fed, antibiotic free, open range animal products like milk, cheese and meat are healthy and real food - not some boxed, processed, sterilized, irradiated non-fude product shipped from here to wherever and stored for weeks and months on end. I don’t care if they have to color it BLACK (hopefully with a non-poisonous coloring agent like a plant dye), I guess when you come to my house you’ll know by my black butter, cheese and cream where my food dollars will continue to go ;)
And to the milk-is-pus person, I guess G-d didn’t know what He was doing when He called the BEST land ‘the land of milk and honey’ - two of the most wonderful raw products ever created!
Georgia government, stay OUT of my refrigerator, please. Help the homeless in Downtown or something more worthy than worrying about coloring raw dairy products, eh?

Shouldn’t the agriculture department be concerning themselves with real threats to the public’s health, like imported feed and meat?
Raw Milk is clearly labeled, the responsibility is on consenting adults to make their own decisions.
Tommy Irvin, can you address issues with adulterated food and leave unadultered food alone?
