Do We Need Valets?

I’m always disturbed when I get my car back from a restaurant valet service. The seat is always in a different spot and it takes me the entire ride home to get it back where I like it.

I like the convenience, though, and since most valet services in Atlanta are complimentary, for just a few bucks in tip money I don’t have to park my own car and can head straight into the restaurant. I’ve noticed some friends, however, hate this. They simply don’t feel the convenience is worth it.

What do you think? Do you prefer to use a valet service when it’s provided, or would you rather save $2 to $3 and park your own car?

I’ve only valet’d one time, and it was at Lenox. It was pouring down rain, and I had my mother with me, so we opted for Valet.

Other than that, I can park my own car thank you. I see no need to pay for the “Convenience” of someone else parking my car. It doesn’t take very long, and I am not inconvenienced by it at all.

I actually am one of those who will park the furthest away and actually get out and W A L K….

For most establishments, I see no need for valet. It might make since at a large mall or an establishment that has no parking lot so a nearby parking deck is utilized. But most often, it is a pain and obviously not needed. How many times have you been somewhere and the valet parked your car less that 20 feet from the door? If it is complimentary, why cant I decline the service and park where I want? Shouldnt the valets be using the spaces farthest from the entrance, not the closest?

Valets are just a way to shake down customers. There is no convenience provided when you have to stop, allow the valet to take your car and then ask for your car afterward. I would rather pay a few dollars to not use the valet. My mother’s car was stolen while with a restaurant valet service a few years ago, never to be recovered.

The valet service is hired by the restaurant to maximize the number of parking spaces. The valet can park more cars into tight spaces so that more customers can come spend money inside. No, your 15 year old Lexus cannot have two parking spaces.

I will Valet park when it is required, but otherwise, valet service is annoying. Most times I valet park, I can see empty parking spaces that I could easily park in. Plus, at the “complimentary” valets, I seem to always end up staring at my car while I wait for the valet to get keys from incoming vehicles or get other outgoing vehicles.

Absolutely HATE valets. A few bucks here and there add up - and for what? When I come out of the restaurant, I have to wait several minutes for the guy to get the ticket and then bring the car. I could have been in the car and gone if I was doing it myself.

I can’t stand valets. The last time I used one, the valet had been smoking and my car reeked of cigarette stench for days!

I don’t care for valet services. Those kids drive like fools and I don’t like the idea of handing my keys over to just anybody. Babu Singola it takes more than a minute to get your seat adjusted.

Look at all these cheap people on this board. They all want the economy to get better but no one wants to use any of their own money. Parking your own vehicle is for common people.

David, this is America and we all are common people. The places that offer valet service in ATL dont need it. Valet parking is for lazy people. And should be use only by elders.

Depends on whether there is free available parking nearby. If I have a pay to park in a lot or if it’s raining or I have to walk more then 2 blocks then I will definately go with the valet service otherwise I am happy to park my own car.

In crowded areas where there’s no free parking - Midtown for example - I am all for it. I trust valets more than I trust the general public of Georgia. I’ve never had a problem with my car getting dinged when I’ve valeted it, but have seen an idiot swing her door into my (closed) door as she got out of her car and walk away in self-parking. Meredith, when you buy your next car, treat yourself to the option that stores your seat settings. Push one button and everything will be back to normal. It comes in handy when one spouse is under 5 feet and the other is over 6 feet, too.

By no thanks

I feel squeamish having a stranger drive my car. Also you hear of scams where they can copy your key and possibly your house keys attached. I feel ripped off paying to have my car parked when I can just do it myself. Some places give you no choice, it’s valet or you don’t eat there. I don’t eat there. I just feel squeamish about having a stranger drive my car, even tho it’s just a humble Corolla. I don’t travel in fancy circles where they have valet parking anyway.
