I have not lived in Atlanta for quite a few years. However, I do recall enjoying many late delightful night/early morning times with a VERY special lady, who I am sad to say I have lost track of and is no longer in my life. The two most remembered places are Zasu’s on Peachtree, with that wonderful piano bar, and the romantic ambiance of Gregory’s on West peachtree. When I recall those times, they still bring a smile to my face. Am now living on the West Coast and oftimes yearn for my Atlanta days …… wonder where she is these days ????

My favorite late night dining is Cafe Intermezzo in Buckhead on Peachtree. It is very romantic , you can sit out on the back patio & the trees are decorated with lights & the food was great.

I really miss the days when OK Cafe was open 24 hours. … They were far and away the best food you could get late night in ATL. Period. Now? I gues it’s gotta be…I don’t know, how late is Fellini’s open?

I will stick with my candidates for this title (Zasu’s & Gregory’s), although the Majestic does rank as high on the availability list.

Landmark diner!!!!!!

By Rip 'n Read

August 22, 2007 10:43 AM | Link to this

Unfortunately both Zasu’s and Gregory’s are long gone. Along with Harrison’s they made up a trio of bars that attracted coked up go-go yuppies from the 80’s. Food was not so much the main attraction as was scoring, one way or the other. As far as late-night dining currently all of the “Landmark” type diners serve huge amounts of mediocre food. R Thomas used to be a great spot but who knows now. Atkins Park serves the bar menu late and Taco Mac in Decatur is open pretty late. Oh how I wish Jerry’s Deli (Los Angeles) would open a restaurant here.

Rip …… I must take exception to your characterization of Zasu’s & Gregory’s as places that “attracted coked up go-go yuppies” …… I was a regular for several years and did not witness any such activity and I found to be the food rather exceptional. In regards to Harrison’s ….. that place was a legend in its’ own time.

I don’t want food being served to me by a p** off employee at 2 a.m. The late night diners are always the most hated in the restaurant business.

Fado in Buckhead used to stay open until 2am, and the Vortex is open till about that time too. Both of those places are decent. I’ve had mixed experiences at R.Thomas late at night - stick to the hamburger and prepare for some slow service.

There’s a Korean place on Buford Highway near 285 called, I think, Tofu 88 that is open really late and has pretty good food if your belly can stand the fiery fury.

Cafe Intermezzo in Buckhead is really cool…and of course on the east side, Waffle House @ Wesley Chapel Road is quick and easy. I like the Harlem Bar’s macaroni and cheese and cat fish fingers were delicious! There was a real cute bartender working in there a couple of months ago….I think his name is Kareem…… (LOL!!!)

By far, hands down, Waffle House is the ultimate pleaser, but when I want to impress friends with something special I take them to The Beautiful on Cascade Rd. It can be a hike since its not directly off any major interstate, but its worth the drive because of the rotating menu. This wonderful place is cheap and is open 24 hrs starting Friday morning thru Sunday night. Also, if you catch it at the right time, usually between 3am and 6am, they’ll have both dinner and breakfast options!!! Mmmmmmmmmm-mmmmm!! Landmark Diner is so mediocre and overpriced, I can’t believe that they do that to those poor college students.

Note to all, and to the AJC webmaster: The reason why someone’s post [Like ‘tom’s) appears more than once at a time is because (as it’s happened with me), the site doesn’t seem to take the post right away; actually seems stalled, so then you click it again. When you check to see if it posted, you see it times the number you clicked “post.” AJC: can ya’ fix that, sugars…?

Gotta be the Majestic…food sucks but the floor show with the drunks is priceless and the fights that ensue keep you entertained.

I haven’t been to Cafe Intermezzo in years because I’d read that the quality had declined, but I see several recommendations here, so that’s cool. I really enjoyed that place back in the late-80s early-90s when it had the only decent selection of microbrew beer in town.

Wilson - I don’t understand which side of the fence you’re on with Fado & Vortex. Are you saying that ‘decent’ is too high praise or too little? I admit it’s been a while since I’ve been to Fado, so I’m not sure where they are quality-wise right now. The Vortex has consistently good sandwiches and I especially like their Rueben. I just had one a couple of days ago, so I can recommend the Vortex with confidence.

By Wilson

August 22, 2007 3:06 PM | Link to this

Darin, that was far too little praise. Those are two of the finest establishments in town.

And Voice of Reason, there is no problem. Chill out and wait about 20 seconds; it always works.

By Wilson

August 22, 2007 3:10 PM | Link to this

Also, Voice of Reason, if you think the Bucket Shop is that good, you obviously haven’t been much of anywhere around town. That place sucks.

By Darin

August 22, 2007 3:21 PM | Link to this

Wilson - gotcha, thanks for the clarification. The Vortex does consistently serve some of the best sandwiches in the city, so my praise was a little on the weak side. It’s been too long since I’ve been to Fado.

Also, I don’t think Voice of Reason was giving an overall recommendatoin to Bucket Shop, he was just praising the chicken quesadillas, the only thing he’s eaten there. I’ve never heard of the place. What is it about it that place that you think sucks?

The Bucket Shop’s food does suck. Their quality of food has gone down tremendously over the last 6 or 7 years. It used to be excellent. 3 or 4 years ago i got the grouper fingers and it was like eating cardboard. Others I was with agreed that the food was not as good as it used to be. It’s still the only bar in Buckhead I will frequent but don’t go for the food. They play great music there, though, and the patio is nice and has t.v.’s outside which is hard to find around town for some reason.

Venture forth…you’re out anyway…go up HWY 41 to Marietta Diner. 24/7/365 Full menu ALWAYS…plenty of room and a great place to knosh at 2-3-4-5 a.m.

Believe it or not, the Marietta Diner has the best burger I’ve had in the Atlanta metro. Their “Twin Burger Deluxe” is even better than the burger I had at The Vortex. :-)

I like the chile and Big Bertha burger at the Vinings Grill, also, just off the E/W Connector and South Cobb in Smyrna.

Peachtree Diner on Holcomb Bridge is open 24 hours and has breakfast and some ‘higher-end’ late night items for the drunkies.(greek items, prosciutto wrapped shrimp) I recommend it to all my 400 friends who grow weary of the all-star breakfast at Waffle House.(though I never will) On a side note: Howard Roark would not love living in Alpharetta XOXO
