In Search of Better Beers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Bob Townsend, who writes Beer Town for the AJC and knows everything there is to know about what happens when hops start hoppin,’ recently turned me on to a Rogue Mocha Porter on the beer list at TAP. We drank it with a simple oatmeal cookie sandwich filled with stout ice cream (from cutie pie pastry chef Jonathan St. Hillaire) and it was simple, shining brilliance. With the beer, the whole effect was one of chocolate, molasses and a little bit of dark caramel. It was like eating autumn (which can’t come soon enough).
Other than the Brick Store in Decatur, I’m searching for a better beer list than TAP”s. Who’s got one?

Summit’s Wayside Tavern in Cumming and Snellville have over 100 draft beers and even more in bottles.
5 Seasons Brewing in Alpharetta and Sandy Springs for great beers brewed on the premises. Excellent food also.

I’m not sure what all TAP has on their list, but the new Taco Mac on Piedmont at Lindbergh Center has 100 beers on tap, and plenty of bottles in the cooler.

For buying beverages and taking them home, Green’s on Buford Hwy is the king of the metro area, and Jax in Cumming, surprisingly, is probably second of those I’ve seen. I lament Pearson’s apparent dwindling interest in better brews.
BTW, I spent a couple of years away from home and lived in Oregon, and visited Rogue’s brewery. Rogue has the strongest presence here of any OR brew, but IMO it is definitely not the preeminent OR brewery. There is a lot of good stuff in OR and in CO that we can not get here.

This is an easy one - it has to be Charlie Mopps Pub in Sandy Springs. 90 Taps, 25 bottles. The best selection in the city easily. A beer lovers bar run by beer lovers, just call it beer Xanadu…

@DublDawg - Green’s on Ponce is significantly better for beer - not sure about the rest of the beverages though. Top ranked place in GA to purchase beer according to beeradvocate.com - thought I’d let you know.
And everyone should remember - its not the number on tap that decides a great place for beer. this is the reason half the stuff you get at taco mac is stale and skunked - they have so many on tap, and so many people coming for miller light, that its impossible to get the turn-around they need. that’s what makes brickstore and 5 seasons so special - a few of the best, constantly changing, constantly served perfectly.

Charlie Mopps Pub on Roswell Road is the best spot in Atlanta for beer lovers…over 90 beers on draft and a gazillion more in the bottle. Great beer selection, awesome food and tons of TVs.

“Total Wine” on Barrett Parkway near Town Center Mall (by the Target) and “Smyrna World Of Beverages” on South Cobb Drive, at the East West Connector. SWAB is great, but Total Wine is the place! You can buy single beers…not just the great big ones, but the regular sized ones! That way, you can sample a new beer without buying all 6 (or 4). And boy do they have a lot of them. And as for wine and liquors…wow wow wow wow. But, for closer in beer runs, SWAB is great.

I’ve not been to 5 Seasons but Rock Bottom on Peachtree usually has a good selection of fresh microbrew and decent food pairings (for a chain restaurant). Their brown ale and stout are good, but my fave is the IPA for a good balance with a bite of extra hops. The Pilsener is also pretty hoppy. One thing that sucks about that place is that they hardly ever have anything from the hand-drawn taps available. When they do, it’s pumped warm just like you’d get it in a proper pub.

Charlie Mopps Pub has a great variety of domestic & imported. Music is good & games (foosball, darts, etc) help to provide a great atmosphere.

This is a no brainer. Charlie Mopps Pub in Sandy Springs not only has at least 90 beers on tap, but they also have a couple hundred in the bottle. They have several beers on tap from Rogue, Heavy Seas and Brooklyn Brewery who each produce some of the best tasting beers I have ever had. The best thing about Charlie Mopps is that they have some crazy new beer on tap almost every time I go there.

I have to go with Charlie Mopps off Roswell too. The most beers I’ve ever seen, most of which I had never heard of…so it’s great to go and try something new (I recommend the Leffe Blonde). Cool place to watch sporting events, they have a ton of TVs.

Charlie Mopps has definatly steped up as the new beer drinkers bar in Atlanta. They have 90 beers on tap and 200 in bottles, but all that said the emphesis is definatly on the quality over simple quantity. Its just a good beer bar run by good people that really love their beer!

Did Charlie Mopps pay all of y’all?
5 Seasons rules! Only a few choices, but all are are brewed on premises and are great, as is the “not your usual pub food” food.
And I have to give props to Pub71 in Brookhaven because the owner is a great guy. I cannot recall what is on tap, but there is a good selection.
By beer made me the slob I am today...

I think that Charlie Mopps is better than Jesus, and I’m sure that even the most devout Christian would agree with me after paying a visit to this wondrous place.
I have seen the beautiful face of my own newborn child, experienced a deeply felt, rapturous love with a remarkable woman, and seen the setting sun paint brilliant colors on the walls of the Grand Canyon (Oh! the grandeur of nature!). But none of that compares with the life-changing experience of sipping beer at Charlie Mopps.
By the way, I am in no way related to anyone at Charlie Mopps nor am I an employee there, though I would gladly part with any of my appendages to have such a privilege.
Sincerely, CM

For an extensive selection and all around good people, food and times I must recommend Charlie Mopp’s Public House as well. Its actually one of the newest bars in town and is privately owned aka its not a chain. If you love beer you won’t be disappointed. Cheers!
