I was born and raised in Georgia and the best fried green tomatoes I have eaten are at the Old Mill Restaurant in Acworth, GA. Their web site is www.acwortholdmill.com.

If you haven’t eaten there, you should.

Matthews Cafeteria, Main Street, Tucker Georgia and the fried chicken is great, too. Wonderful Southern cooking at a very reasonable price as in three vegetables, meat, iced tea about eight dollars, and those fluffy high yeast rolls, just like mama’s! Kids eat free. We call Matthews the “Tucker Country Club”, a favorite for over fifty years, family run.

Is the cafeteria at Charlie Brown (Fulton County Airport) still open? Tuesdays - collards, fgt, livers and gravy, and sweet potato biscuits.

After eating there, I could probably tolerate Paula Deen for more that 5 minutes………..y’all.

Other than my own, I used to love the ones at City Grill in Atlanta—they were served with fresh sliced tomatos, goat cheese, pecans and a wonderful sauce. Not sure if they still serve them, but they were great! My second vote would go to The Whistle Stop Cafe in Juliette, GA.

This recipe is great.. straight from Southern Living

Ingredients 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, divided 1/2 cup cornmeal 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 3 medium-size green tomatoes, cut into 1/3-inch slices Vegetable oil Salt to taste

Preparation Combine egg and buttermilk; set aside. Combine 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, cornmeal, 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper in a shallow bowl or pan.

Dredge tomato slices in remaining 1/4 cup flour; dip in egg mixture, and dredge in cornmeal mixture.

Pour oil to a depth of 1/4 to 1/2 inch in a large cast-iron skillet; heat to 375°. Drop tomatoes, in batches, into hot oil, and cook 2 minutes on each side or until golden. Drain on paper towels or a rack. Sprinkle hot tomatoes with salt.

Yield Makes 4 to 6 servings

I don’t do this for every one, but…. fried green tomato lovers are special. here ya go!

Green tomatoes salt and freshly ground black pepper (o taste) 1/3 cup white flour 1/3 cup of fine cornmeal vegetable oil for frying

Slice the tomatoes and sprinkle with kosher salt and black pepper on both sides.

Combine flour and cornmeal. Dip the tomatoes in the cornmeal and flour mixture and make sure covered throughly.

Heat the oil in a frying pan, (preferably cast iron skillet.) Fry for a few minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels.

I put a little good quality cayenne pepper in with the cornmeal and flour mixture… or you can load ‘em up with Tabasco after they’re done!

thanks Ziza - but ‘dt’ I have to agree with you on the Gnat’s Landing Fried Green Tomato Club sandwich. There is a new Gnat’s Landing in Statesboro and it is equally as good there. It just takes longer to get to the beach from there…..

I have a question for those that voted for the Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle which is owned by the same people that own Journey’s End in Loganville. I’ve been to Journey’s End many times but never to the Blue Willow Inn. I understand that the Blue Willow Inn is more pleasing aesthetically but I have heard that the food at one is just as good as it is at the other. True or not true?
