I don’t know what a “budget” Mexican food restaurant could be. Most of the strip shopping center Mexican restaurants in Atlanta have exactly the same bland food.
I was blessed this past month with my first grandchild. While waiting for his arrival at Piedmont Hospital we walked down Peachtree Street to Uncle Julio’s Casa Grande and had a wonderful meal. The salsa is unique and chips as thin (and good) as any I’ve ever had. The grilled chicken was perfect (not overcooked and juicy). We’ll go back there when in town.
In Vinings, there is a La Paz restaurant that has some decent dishes. Their menu isn’t as imaginative as it was 5 years ago, but a good choice nevertheless.
If you go to On The Border at Cobb Place and have to sit in the bar area - beware. They have a waiter there who is probably the worst I’ve ever had (don’t remember his name but he wears a ponytail). If you get him, ask for another waiter.

Chuckie’s right—most places have the same menu and serve the same bland slop.
Taqueria Los Hermanos, in Tucker, is quite good. Pozole in Va Highlands is also good. Nuevo Laredo is good, but I’m not so sure it’s worth the long wait.

I stopped eating Mexican food when I saw all the illegal aliens protesting for their “rights” and waving their Mexican flags in our faces.

Budget Mexican= No one can understand you when you speak English. God only knows what’s going on in the kitchen. Make sure you have plenty of reading material in the bathroom later.

Without a doubt Coyote in Avondale on College. Outside looks like an old MS WINNERS but inside the BEST inexpensive Mexican Food! Great Staff and even better Margaritas! Used to be in trendy downtown Decatur but the rent priced them out so they moved to a new location to keep their prices low.

If you’re in the Sandy Springs area, Marquito’s on Roswell Road just north of Northridge has very good Mexican food that’s fairly inexpensive. And OTB for lunch is always a good deal - great food for a great price. The Lenox location tends to have some server problems, though, so be forewarned. And if budget isn’t an issue, I agree that Pappasito’s is the best. Wonderful fajitas!!

Budget Mexican? It’s all inexpensive, compared to other places I go. The four best (in order) are Jalisco, Nuevo Laredo Cantina, La Parilla on Dallas Highway and Taqueria Sundown.

Do all of you people search for the same crappy CHAIN mexi-restos??? Casa Grande is total crap, compared to Taco Bell its good. I bet most of you like Willy’s and Moe’s….eeh. Drive over to Buford Hwy and you find the best mexican restos anywhere in ATL. El Rey de Taco is def’ly one. El Mexicano on Moreland past E. Atl is damn tasty and cheap. But I’m sure most people are afraid to go anywhere 3 miles away from their home. You think you have authentic Mexican in the suburbs??? Right, keep thinking you live in Atlanta when you’re out in Roswell or Alparetta or Kennesaw. Y’all are “true foodies”

Charles’ recommendations sort of sadden me. I like Casa Grande, but for the price of an entree there, I can feed two people at a dozen restaurants of Buford Highway which are better. The chain restaurants he recommended are expensive and not very good.
My favorites: Monterrey (Buford Highway) Taco Veloz (several locations), El Potro (Buford Highway), Las Tortas (several locations) Mi Barrio (Grant Park)
In terms of “upscale” cheap Mexican the Taqueria Del Sols are good as well as Taqueria Zocalo.

Mr. Taco in Roswell off of Holocomb Bridge is the best “budget” Mexican I’ve had. I’m still in college seven years after I graduated high school which means I have to look for a budget. They have a salsa bar (you have to pay a $1 for a basket of chips) and everything we order there is great. Atmosphere is not really anything special, but they do deliver $8.

By far the best Mexican food I’ve ever had is at Taqueria Los Hermanos. It’s practically hidden in the corner of a shopping center featuring a store called Wu-Mart.
Chips are thin, hot, and fresh, salsa is fresh, ingredients in the meals are fresh…obviously, the emphasis here is FRESH. Their specialty burritos (particularly the asada, pastor, and rajas) are amazing, huge, and only cost $6.95.

There is a reason why El Taco Veloz on Roswell Road is successful (and in a neighborhood with many Mexican patrons). Also, Nuevo Laredo is the best in the city for a sit-down Mexican meal - and not expensive! Try their caldo de pollo.

It amazes me that in all ajc blogs people must belittle others to make themselves feel good. Anyway….
Not in Georgia, but the San Antonio Taco Company in Nashville, TN is the best “low” budget mexican ever. All fresh ingredients - they make the salsa and tortillas themselves. I think a road trip is in order. My stepson loves Taco Bell so we eat there a lot - the one near our house is good, always fresh and tasty. Other than that, I make my own mexican food at home so I don’t have to eat it out.

The lunch menu prices at El Porto (3396 Buford Hwy NE) certainly qualifies as budget. The food rocks with flavor and generous portions. The service there is better than I have had at several fine dining restaurants in Buckhead and Midtown.

El Toro Loco in Griffin is great. It looks like any other redecorated Pizza Hut but there are some great dishes. They have very fresh, creative salads, a great shrimp cocktail (so my husband says) that is more like fresh gazpacho with shrimp, and the best salsa. Moreover, the waiters speak English pretty well.

Hey ME! Actually, there is a difference. Most of the chain restaurants mentioned are what Hispanics would call TEX-MEX, meaning the food is pretty much American inspired with some Mexican flavors. You want REAL MEXICAN? Go to Buford Hwy, to those Mexican plazas and ask for black beans, rice, and either tacos or carne asada! Now, that’s Mexican food!! The small “fondas” are the best and authentic!!

I think Nuevo Laredo Cantina might have the best I’ve tasted in the city but the wait is ridiculous. Taqueria Los Hermanos is SERIOUSLY good too and for a great price! They serve real quality food and the atmosphere is cool. I always drive by Coyote in Avondale Estates and wonder how it is. Now that I’ve read some reviews I’ll make it a point to check them out soon. And Pancho’s on Buford Hwy was good but I’ve only been once.

The San Antonio Taco Company in Nashville is the McDonald’s of Mexican food. ( That AIN’T a compliment. ) There is a reason why they don’t dare try to peddle that garbage in larger cities like Atlanta.
FYI: While not specifically stated, this blog is about Mexican food in and around the A-T-L-A-N-T-A area. Also, this F-O-O-D blog is not for your self-righteous take on society, either, Perkle.
If you drive to Nashville for anything other than a music-related or sporting-related event, you get what you deserve.
For even mentioning TACO BELL in this forum in anything other than a sarcastic or deprecating manner, Perkle, your overweight, self-righteous, ignorant backside should be dragged from your minivan and shot.
Be Sweet, and go try Pappasito’s, P-Diddy.

I Love LaParilla in Fayetville. They have the BEST shrimp fajita’s with real jumbo shrimp. The place is always packed, especially on the weekends. It’s clean and the staff is cool. The chips are so thin and crisp, the usually break in the conqueso dip. No need to worry, just fish em’ out and keep it moving. I’ve been told and have seen the Texas Rita put folks on their azz!

TO: Me! yes a Mexican is a Mexican, no matter what area…but for a Mexican to open a resto OTP and make a profit is to dumb down true mexican fare which is rustic and simple w/ fresh ingreds. You will find great mexican IN THEIR HOME not in any resto. Taco trailers are great but they are all gone now. Las Tortas Locas and Taco Veloz is good. Cantina La Casita in E. Atl is total crap. Look for run down, small places…those you will find great mexican food…NOT at a CHAIN resto where all their crap comes from a SYSCO truck. Goto Buford hi-way and actually go into a small taqueria. But like i said before most people are too AFRAID to go in…just like all the good chinese restos on buford hwy. Just stick to your Doc Chey’s, PF Chang’s and Chin Chin’s…total mediocre crap. You ever see sea cucumber on any of those menus? Everyone’s a food critic.

Nuevo Larado is the best Mexican in town as the food is always fresh and not canned as in other Mexican resturants. Sometimes the wait can be long but there are times that are not peak periods where you can get a table with no wait. They are having their 15th anniversary on June 20th. Expect a wait if you go at peak times.

I usually don’t blog but I found a restaurant that is worth mentioning… NoMas Cantina has become a recent favorite. The food is great and reasonably priced and I’ve never had a better margarita. They are located downtown not far from the Dome. They started off as a furniture store and have expanded to include the restaurant. Everything you see, you can purchase. As far as intown, I agree with Nuevo Laredo Cantina, and Taqueria Del Sol is also good. I also like El Torero (Briarcliff & N. Druid Hills) and Los Loros (N. Decatur & Clairmont). Los Loros is CHEAP and good, as are their very strong margaritas. More pricey and in the fashion of Tex Mex, I like Casa Grande and Zocalo.

I love El Torreo in Norcross. Food is in expensive and the service is always great. This place is packed every day during lunch and on the weekends. The downside is they are not opened on Sundays. :(
I too come from the Southwest and I used to find it really funny when a “Mexican” restaurant used to bring me Velveeta and queso dip. LMAO!

Depends on what you mean by “Mexican” & “Budget.”
For my money, the taqueria inside of the Mercado de Publa, formerly the deli counter of the fomer Publix on Buford Highway.
Great, dripping, made to order tacos & other items accompanied by a slew of varius sauces, grilled, onions, veggies, organo, limes, the works.
More meat than the hallowed Taco Veloz & a very prompt, attentive crew of one. True, he doesn’t understand English but he knows his regulars.
The kind of place that has menuedo on the weekends.
While you’re there, cruise by the bakery. Various sweetbreads, buns & custardy goodness all close to the size of a kleenix box. All for a dollar a piece.

The BEST Mexican restaurant is in Alpharetta, Georgia and goes by the simple name of Pure!!!.. I am surprised that this survey asks for the most economical as sometimes price has nothing to do with quality food. Pure gives a super value for the price. Had the worst Mexican dinner in memory at Los Hermanos in Tucker - the chicken enchilada was so overcooked and dry inside and had no sauce on it - I couldn’t even swallow it without copious amounts of water. And the only beans they have are black beans and the menu is small with little to choose from. Give me Coyote’s in Avondale or the little place in Oakhurst (can’t remember the name) anytime.

Ok, for a starting place, can we eliminate any place that has a freakin’ “Speedy” on the menu?
That and their ingredients have to consist of more than lard, lard, lard & oh yes lard. Which pretty much rules out Mama Nimfa’s.
BTW, you do realize that undocumented workers are from other countries besides Mexico, don’t you? Oh wait, I know, they all look the same.

The reality is that most Americans don’t a d_mn about what real Mexican food is. You gringos eat at a nasty pig sty like La Parilla and act like that is good Mexican food.
If you want to eat real Mexican food, eat at at restaurant frequented by MEXICANS. For a real taste of Mexico, go to a local taqueria (taco shop, for you gringos) or marisqueria (seafood restaurant).
I think most people just want to go to an Americanized “Mexican” restaurant, eat chips and salsa, listen to rock music, drink margaritas, and dine on vomitous Tex-Mex.
Go outside your comfort zone. Here are some tips to help you identify a REAL Mexican restaurant:
The signage and menus should be in English/Spanish or Spanish. English only is a NO-NO!!!!
The place is decorated in Mexican motif. Univision or Telemundo is being shown on the TV.
Burgers and fries are not on the menu (Not even the kid’s menu).
A taco from there is served on a warm tortilla with steak, chicken, chorizo, etc, and onion and cilantro. Salsa is served on the side to garnish the taco. NO CHEESE, NO LETTUCE, NO TOMATO!!!!! NO HARD CORN SHELLS!!!!! GOT THAT???????
The restaurant is filled with sounds of authentic Mexican music. Absolutely no rock music played under any circumstances.
The wait staff is actually from Mexico or Central America, not some homogenized South American Columbians or Argentinans
You’re served real, homemade— oh wait— you don’t know what real salsa when you see and taste it anyway.
The place isn’t frequently solely by gringos (like Los Reyes, La Parilla, Taco Bell, etc). More than likely a place like this is in a Latino neighborhood (like Southwest Gwinnett/Northeast Dekalb, Marietta/Smyrna, Forest Park, etc).
Bon apetit!

I definitely like La Rumba in SS as far as the ‘generico’ type Mexican. The food quality seems to be a bit better than the usual slop rice and beans. Now as far as Latin .. the La Fonda down on Peachtree just south of Buckhead has the best texas margaritas for your buck (no sour mix!), and fantastic fish tacos. Yum. Also any of the real dumpy looking taquerias where the menu/clientele is all Hispanic are delicious and cheap. (thinking of one at Holcomb Br. and Alph Hwy..)

I got one of the best cheese enchiladas in my life at the now-deunct El Titan. While I was eatting there the band walked in—all Mexican, wearing black pants, black cowboy shirts, cowboy boots, and black hats, all with outlandish belt buckles and hat bands. They looked like a wild mix of Johnny Cash and the Cisco Kid.

What about “Nacho Mama’s” on Old National Highway in College park? They serve Mexican Soul Food! Just kidding, but Juan (or Two) is right…get away from the chains and enjoy real Mexican food at the sources; Buford Hwy., Gwinnett, etc. If you can swim or would rather fly, La Parilla in downtown Cancun, away from the tourist rtaps and off the main paths, is the S**T and you want get “them” either. Hurry though, the tourists are begin to find it! Adios….

Boy…looks like I had too many “micheladas” before I posted…my typing and grammar sucks mucho. That should have been tourist TRAPS and WON’T give you the S**TS. Sorry. And if you don’t know what a “michelada” is, get away from Frontera’s and Taco Bell!

Casa Grande is THE best, especially their salsa and thin chips. But if “budget” is what you want, La Botana is it. Their margaritas and carne asada burritos with green chili will satisfy your taste buds and barely dent your bank account!

I do not live in Atlanta now, but, did for 10+ years in 80’s and 90’s. The absolute best Mexican was US BAR y GRILL! What happened to it?? Nothing before or since has even come close to comparing to the value and quality of the food it served!

For my money, the fajitas at El Zorrito in Roswell are the best in the area. I’ve paid a lot more for lesser quality all over the metro. Lucky for me, they’re about 5 minutes from my house. The wait staff has some English skills, and are quite patient with my poor Spanish.

Pure in Alpharetta is a joke, that food is hardly authentic, its overpriced, its really just trying to be a “hip” trendy place… in Alpharetta. Yeah.
I wholeheartedly agree with the reviews for Nuevo Laredo. BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN GEORGIA.
I heard of a mexican place in midtown that uses animal fat instead of oil (like they do in mexico) for all their food, including their homemade chips, but I forgot the name…. it will be on the top of my list for places to try!

HI
I live just off Buford Hwy in Chamblee, so we’ve experimented quite a bit…our standard favorite is EL POTRO…the service is great and food is tasty! Our new favorite is the new LA RUMBA on Buford Hwy….the avocado chicken soup rocks! And the Carnitas taco stand inside Plaza Fiesta, makes fresh tortillas and yummy meat fillings! no english on the menu here!
I will admit, I am addicted to Taqueria Del Sol’s fish tacos, but get really tired of the attitude and arrogance.

Jalisco , located at Peachtree Battle Shopping Center and Taxco at 4500 Roswell Rd, south Sandy Springs. If you can beat ‘em you’ve got to prove it.

The best OTP Mexican I have found is Tara Humata on the east side of Windward in Alpharetta. I have to admit, it isn’t cheap, less than Papasitos, but the food quality is tops. Fresh ingredients used in all the dishes I’ve had thus far. Be forwarded, the cops like to station themselves in the area for DUI’s.

Viva Loco in Marietta. Near Sandtown. It is a DIVE on the outside but the BEST mexian and ritas in town. I recommend the Chilaquiles.
For good but nothing new on the menu there is a total dive on 41 near dallas hwy up near Ksaw College….Cannot recall the name…..however Latinos are found EATING at both here and Viva….Now if the natives are eating it you know it is authentic.
You want upscale and good try Tera Humata on Windward. I go for lunch when you get more bang for you buck. The charros are to die for!

The best thing going is not ONE location but I think some of many. One place may have great drinks and others may have great salsa or food. Suffice it to say, we ALL have our favorite spots. I frequent many and appreciate ‘vive la différence’

Others have mentioned it, but one of the best is Taqueria Los Hermanos in Tucker. I actually drive OTP to get to it. The only negative about it is that they are a wine and beer only place. I’m sure I’ll get flamed for saying this, but people on this board need to calm down a bit. Just because someone likes a chain restaurant, it doesn’t mean they are stupid. I love great food as much as anyone, but I don’t begrudge others if they want a fajita from Wille’s…

Definitely one of the best is Monterreys(Lavista Road). You will enjoy the food and especially the marguaritas.
