Pretty much any Indian restaurant. Too bad I live in this hick town where a country buffet is considered haute cuisine. Especially for this vegetarian, the pickings are pretty slim around here. If any Indian chefs are listening you will have a very loyal customer if you come to Griffin!

From what I have heard, “Soul Vegetarian” serves delicious main course vegetarian dishes and deserts.

Nicola’s does not have a large vegetarian selection. I have been there many times and they don’t have a large menu period. Their rice is great, their fish is hit or miss (depending on how much they had thawed out. you can tell it is frozen). The only thing on the menu I could eat as a vegetarian (or pescitarian i should say) was the fish, rice, veggies, pita, hummus, tabouleh and baba ghanoush.

I have two favorites, Vatica on Terrell Mill for Indian food and Green Sprout in Midtown. World Peace Cafe just opened in Sandy Springs. I have only been there once, and it was quite good.

By Whitney

Green Sprout (1529 Piedmont Ave) is a vegetarian chinese restaurant… and it’s fantastic! Cheap, too! Definately try the specials on the dry erase board, and the mushroom soup should not be missed. Some of the fake meat bits are a little wonky, but with such fantastic vegetable offerings, no reason to even worry about them. Delicious!

I absolutely love Sunflower Cafe (or is it Cafe Sunflower?). My husband and I frequent the Sandy Springs location. He’s not a vegetarian, but he’s often the one who suggests to go there. The portions are VERY generous, there’s always something really interesting as a special, and they have a nice selection of teas and juices, too. My favorite dish is the stuffed mushrooms.

Soul Vegetarian is a great place, too. You’ll want to fast for about half a day before going there. Love the corn bread and the vegetable side dishes; they know how to cook ‘em right. I’ve never tried their soy ice cream, but I’ve heard it’s delicious. Next time.

If you’re in the ‘burbs, you can’t go wrong with Sweet Tomatoes. It’s not a pure vegetarian place, but they’re very good about labeling what’s vegetarian and what’s not (i.e. things that might seem vegetarian but aren’t get a written “non-vegetarian” label. Very polite). There are always several vegetarian soups on the buffet. The price is so low for all the stuff you get that I’ve become disinclined to order salads at other restaurants. Why pay for $6.99 for a paltry portion at Doc Green’s when you can get a belly-busting meal at Sweet Tomatoes for about a dollar more?

For a convenient lunch place, I like Jason’s Deli. They make veggie versions of dishes I’d gotten used to not being able to eat — po’ boy sandwiches and french onion soup!

I have started an couple of lists of pure vegetarian and vegetarian-friendly restaurants on yelp.com: link: vegetarian.yelp.com(http://vegetarian.yelp.com) with apologies to Green Sprout and Loving it Live, which I haven’t typed in yet.

LUSH Cafe was excellent.. they are now closed looking for a new location. For great vegetarian food with delightful ambiance I love Cafe Sunflower on Roswell Road. For absolutely great vegetarian food go to Sid’s Gourmet Vegetarian in Stockbridge, across the street from Henry Medical Center. Check out [www.happycow.net]

Broadway Cafe on Briarcliff has a Vegatarian side that is pretty good.

Stay away from Chatte Patte also on Briarcliff. I ordered an assortment and nothing was edible. My friend and I literally left everything. And when even the rice is rubbery, that’s pretty bad

I would recommend Madras Saravana Bhavan on Lawrenceville Hwy in Decatur. As a fresh-off-the-boat Indian (and from S. India, to add to boot), I can vouch for the fact that the food in this place is as authentic as it gets. It is as southern (Indian) a joint as can be.

By GS

I agree with Pat C., Sid’s Gourmet Vegetarian is at the top of my list. There are also several great vegetarian Indian restaurants in the North Dekalb Mall area.

I agree with the poster that mentioned Sweet Tomatoes. You will only find this restaurant chain on the northside of the ATL in Gwinnett, Cobb, Alpharetta and near Perimeter Mall. Great selection and beats Doc Greens hands down. You can get stuffed without touching a piece of meat.

Sri, what do you think of Udipi?? I haven’t been there in ages, but thought it was good.

So Kong Dong on Buford Hwy is good, and many dishes can be made with tofu.

Were I vegetarian (perish the thought), I’d eat a lot of Indian and tofu based Korean/Asian.

For great vegetarian Indian food, my favorites are Udipi in on Scott Boulevard Decatur and Vatica on Terrill Mill in Marietta. Vatica is worth a trip just to experience the “no menu - what you eat is what I give you” concept.

I echo Cafe Sunflower. Tin Drum Asia Cafe also makes most of their dishes with tofu (and they’ve now added brown rice) - very good and inexpensive. The other place I LOVE is Veggieland on Pharr Road in Buckhead. Terrific food, fresh. Finally, R. Thomas has great veggie/healthy food as well.

In Midtown… Jason’s Deli has by far the BEST salad bar. But I have to agree with Whitney that Green Sprout is pretty good to great! I had never had veggie Chinese prepared like that but really enjoyed it.

Sri, can you please explain the difference between Northern and Southern Indian cuisine? I am a great fan of Indian food especially the vegetarian dishes. I enjoy Angan in Roswell just east of 400, and Himalaya in Chamblee Plaza (it’s fun trying to get the server to smile). As a city girl growing up in Chicago, vegetables for me were plain canned or frozen, so I’m loving the art of veggie cuisine here in the South.

I haven’t tried all of these restaurants, but thanks to everyone for the great suggestions! I also wanted to add that, although it is not strictly for vegetarians (you can bring your carnivore friends!), Doc Chey’s has a lot of excellent noodle dishes that can be (or already are) meat-free. I can’t even eat veggie lo mein anywhere else now, because I’m so spoiled by Doc Chey’s.

I used to go to Harmony Vegetarian when I lived in the area. I enjoyed one of their specials, chicken with assorted veggies and delicious sugar (honey?) glazed walnuts. Even my husband loved the place and he’s not remotely a vegetarian. I’ve noticed a vegetarian Chinese place in Roswell closer to where I live now, but can’t recall the name.

There’s actually a “Down-home” Indian restaurant in Marietta called Vatica that serves the very best in veggie cuisine. It is not only the best vegan spot, but the best Indian and one of the 5 best restaurants in the City of Atlanta.

And it’s completely down home. First of all, you don’t order. The owner’s wife has prepared food and she just fixes your plate (or the various bowls.) And then, you eat. After a while, the owner’s wife will come by and ask you if you want more of this or that. And she piles some more on your plate. And she keeps doing that until you’re full.

Many people from India says that Vatica is how you would eat if you went to their home… not merely restaurant fare.

And I will tell you that it is GREAT!

Great topic! I mostly eat vegetarian. BOTH Soul Veg. locations are off the chain! Ditto Buckhead’s Veggieland & their proprietess is the loveliest person. Been eating at Udipi for years. The other Indian veg. places are good but mostly TOO spicy. I also enjoy Rainbow Cafe in Decatur & Fung’s Chinese in Roswell, though I’ve not been in a while. Harmony on Buford Hwy is great too. I like a lot of veg-friendly places too, like Sweet Tomatoes, DeKalb Farmers Market, Penang Malaysian (next to Harmony) & pretty much all the noodle places. You can even find lots of veggie choices at places like Golden Corral & Ryan’s.

JoAnne, I think you mean Fung’s, which I just mentioned. Best veg. Chinese in the area! Oh, also there’s a 24 hour Chinese restaurant in midtown, around 14th & Spring, I forget the name but it’s attached to an extended stay hotel. They have 2 menus, conventional & all veg. Great food!

I’m so glad to see this blog because I’m always looking for vegetarian restaurants! I love Harmony on Buford Highway. It isn’t fancy, but it is delicious. They have many dishes made with meatless “meat” that has fooled many of my friends. I haven’t tried anything there that I wouldn’t recommend.

I love Indian and Pan-Asian Food, and it can be healthy.

But a word of caution: Some of that food has high fat content, due to the fact that it is fried… including the vegetables.

Also, Indian and pan-Asian food is notoriously known for their high sodium content. Too much salt in your diet can kill you, so watch out!

In short, eat all foods in moderation. And cook at home most times to monitor the content of your food.

Thai House of Roswell also has an excellent vegetarian menu in addition to their regular carnivorous selections. I have been eating there for years and it is one of the few places that also serves meat where I have never had a piece of meat accidently end up in my food. They have a couple of meat substitutes (not fake meats) that I have never seen anywhere else. Definitely worth a try. And very good service from friendly staff!!!!
