Reuben’s Deli on Broad Street, near 5 points MARTA Station. Big sandwiches. Good prices. Good service. (just thinking about them, now makes me want one and it is only 10:05 am).

Kool Korners….yes! I’ve been a food fan in ATL for 10 years, but since I’ve never worked downtown, I’ve not had the opportunity to have a Kool Korner’s Cuban. I finally did last week and, yes, it deserves all the hype.

A couple of other dang good sandwich places: NY Deli on Pharr in Buckhead (great steak and deli sandwiches) and Panagea in “West Midtown.” Panagea has interesting international sandwiches and I love their Bahn Mi.

In fact, I love any bahn mi (vietnamese prk sandwiches) so if you ever have a chance to order (most likely in a Vietnamese place naturally), order one.

Finally, I’ll admit to great affection for the Yankee (a piled-on pastrami) at Jason’s Deli.

Kool Korner is a great sandwich as duly noted by the above listers. Woody’s Steak Sanwiches near Piedmont and their former neighbor Fabiano’s had the best deli sandwiches south of the Northeast US for years.

If you are talking sandwich in a bun, then try Skip’s Chicago Dogs on Cllege Avenue in Decatur.

Just Loafin at Memorial and Boulevard has great PoBoys. Ann’s Snack Shack on Memorial and Maynard Terrace is the Home of The Ghetto Burger.

If you are north of the city, Baldinos on Powers Ferry Road near Harry’s Farmer’s Market and Christo’s Pizza on Delk Road are top contenders.

I could go on, and on as I am a bit of a foddie and aficionado on the subject….

Have you ever eaten the steak sandwich at Highland Tap? It is a slab steak between buns……. [drool]

I know we’re talking Atlanta here, but if there are any southern Californians like me (or anyone heading out there soon) don’t miss the corned beef/pastrami at Canter’s on Fairfax and Beverly in Los Angeles. Piled high; get it with potato salad and cole slaw. Amazing!

I’m a transplant from California (Northern) as well and I’ve found there isn’t a “deli culture” here as in San Francisco, but that is just part of living in the South just like there isn’t a “BBQ culture” there. I love NY Deli in Buckhead but that’s far for me. Rueben’s downtown is good if your willing to pay an arm and a leg, they have great New York attitudes as well. Jersey Mikes is good as is the Publix deli near me (East Lake). Sensational Subs has great Philly cheesesteaks.

These are all good places but I haven’t found the a true neighborhood deli. A deli should be a hive of activity with a dozen guys behind the counter barking and shouting. It should have huge display cases with an infinite amount of meats, cheeses, breads, salads, and things you can’t even pronounce the name of. The menu should be as thick as a dictionary. It would have a trophy case and pictures from all of the softball and Little League teams it has sponsored over the years. There would be customers that would have gone there for years and bring their grandchildren when they visit. To me that is what a deli is. It’s more than just good food it’s the life of the neighborhood.

In the northwest ‘burbs…was blown away by Monte’s in Townelake. CIA chef with a little hole in the wall in a strip center. Friends were talking about it and I tried it for the first time. Geez! Everything homemade and handmade to order. Burgers to die for. Try the HungryMan breakfast sandwich if three of you are headed off for a day of fishing and want one sandwich to share. Signature BLT’s.

These are all very nice sandwich places, (Kool Korners, Jason’s Deli, New York Deli) and I like them but Hands Down the best sandwiches in Atlanta can be found at Muss & Turnerswebsite

The sandwiches are more expensive because everything that goes into them is better than any other place in town. I live in Grant Park and I travel out to Smyrna for M&T’s because it’s that good.

I have to say that I really do love Jersey Mike’s. For a chain, it’s incredible. Fresh-slicing the ingredients is absolutely key to a great sandwich.

Baldino’s is great. I wish they had more than their two current locations. Fancy Pantry in Alpharetta also serves up some pretty mean sandwiches. Baguettes and Bagels in AlphaRoswell had an incredible chicken club.

AJC.com shouldn’t allow any of these posts that say Jersey Mike’s, Jason’s Deli or Schlotsky’s. I don’t think they’re bad by any means, but just like BBQ…you can’t go with chains…you gotta go with the hole-in-the-wall, mom & pop-type places. There used to be a place at Roswell Rd. & Abernathy called SONNY’S DELI. Authentic Jewish deli. It was the best, but then Jason’s Deli moved into the neighborhood and ran Sonny out. I think Sonny re-located. Anyone have any idea where Sonny’s is today?

For cheesesteaks….DEFINITELY Woody’s at 10th & Monroe. THERE IS NO COMPETITION HERE. You’ll wait in line a long time, and you’ll like it! Best time to go is after 2pm when there’s less of a line and they aren’t trying to cook 10 other cheesesteaks at the same time as yours.

I have to say that I grew up down the street from the ORIGINAL Mikes Subs (Jersey Mikes to you guys) and the franchise is as good as the orignal was, other than the fact that we got served by a bunch of surfer boys!!!!! I’d have to agree with all the votes for Kool Korner. The place doesn’t look like much at all, but I absolutely love their cubans! And NY Deli on Pharr is great too. Very wide selection of sandwiches & I’ve yet to find one I don’t like. TK - can you suggest one at the Fickle Pickle? Been there just once & I think I got the cuban. and I agree that Publix Italian is not bad at all

Havana’s is good also a good place for shakes - but these are tropical. Deelish!!!

Sorry but chains just aren’t as good as small mom and pops with quality ingredients and folks that care about serving real food.
