The best hot dogs in the ATL aer at the corner of 10th and Argonne. They’re cooked on charcoal and they’re called Sahlen Hot Dogs! The very best hot dog ever produced! Add some weber’s mustard and you have a tube steak to die for…….watch for them this summer ATL…JUST YOU WATCH!

Try these:
Agree with the choice of Manuel’s and O’Terrill’s. Great big dogs, they don’t skimp on the topping and they pay attention to the bun. You need a knife and fork to eat these things. (Not that that’s a bad thing.)
I like Da Chicago Dog on Piedmont in Buckhead. I’ve talked with a friend from Chicago and he railed against this place, but I think that’s a reaction to his recent transplantation to Atlanta and not necessarily about the quality of the dogs.
The Local on Ponce has a greatly overlooked dog as well. Order it with their colelaw on it. The coleslaw isn’t mayo-based, it’s vinegar, so that adds another dimension. Goes great with their Belgian fries and it’s dirt cheap too.

Kevino’s on decatur road (near the new location of lenny’s) is a great authentic Chicago style dog. The guys who opened it come across as an gang of buddies looking eargerly attending to customers with a friendliness that makes you want to support them. Probably still ironing out some bugs because they’ve only been open for a few weeks, but definitely worth checking out.

Skip’s in Avondale is the best. They have great regular dogs, Chicago dogs, and other menu items. They acutally have a good Cheese steak. Friendly staff, good prices. You’ll be very safe there as it seems that most of the surrounding police, sherriff and Fire Rescue people like to eat there as well.

There are no good hotdogs in Atlanta. The best hotdogs are in Chicago: Portillios, Byron’s on Irving Park, and any joint that sells the Vienna Beef Kosher hotdogs all the way on a poppy seed bun with mustard, relish, onions, celery salt, tomatoes, a pickle spear, sport peppers and definitely, absolutely, NO ketchup, chili crap nor cole slaw.

The Varsity is a joke. I’m a native Atlantan and I know that. It might scratch an itch for grease, but it’s more in the same vein as Krystal (and that’s not a good thing).
The best hot dogs are Chicago dogs, hands-down. I don’t even like half the ingredients by themselves, but when you combine them on top of a Vienna Beef dog, it’s Heaven. Skip’s in Avondale and the Windy City Grill in Roswell (formerly Bobby G’s) serve up the best tube steaks in town. Anyone who claims these are not as good as authentic Chicago dogs are sorely mistaken - they use the same Vienna-supplied ingredients!

a GREAT hot dog can be found at a little place called SKIN’S
The closest location is Cornelia or Anderson, SC.
They have a much better chili than the Varsity. Not greasy like the Varsity.

bdj-durham, you can get that at Hot Dog Heaven in Woodstock; it’s called the Chicago dog. The place is run by a Wisconsin transplant so they make the real thing, with Vienna Beef, and serve it alongside other Chicago staples like Italian Beefs, bratwursts, etc. Not quite in Atlanta, but it’s a lot less far north than Chicago!

Nu-Way is pretty nasty. I went there awhile back with some friends on our way down to FL. At the time, we were like “these are incredible!” but afterwards, the thought became revolting. Way way way too much grease.
Chicago dog, FTW!

Brian from Buffalo is right. A Sahlen’s hotdog is the best, hands down. ANY hotdog pales in comparison. You southerners wouldn’t know a good dog if it hit you in the azz.

Of course I love the Varsity, but I really love the hot dogs from Zestos on Ponce. When I lived in Atlanta I tried to get there often. As far as I’m concerned they are every bit as good as the Varsity. Also, their fries are better than the Varsity.
By Phyllis
April 26, 2007 9:04 AM | Link to this
I forgot to mention Zestos also has really good onion rings. The fries and onion rings aren’t greasy. That’s the main reason I don’t like the Varsity much anymore. The fries, etc. drip of grease. And having one time been from the north I really like an “all the way” dog with chili and slaw. But, not the vinegar kind. Yuck!

For those who say the Varsity is the best you might as well not even comment because you don’t know what a real hot dog tastes like. My dog would not even eat something from the Varsity. I prefer Mike’s Chicago Dogs in Sandy Springs, and Bobby G’s in Alpharetta. They both do Chicago proud with good dogs. Nothing is better than Vienna Beef.

Mike’s in Sandy Springs and Chicago Delights in Marietta - food and staff are tops! The owner at Chicago Delights will even provide you with a pin so you can mark your neighorhood on his Chicago map! Being a Carolina girl, brought up on hot dogs smothered in slaw and chili, my Chicago native fiance has converted me to the Chicago dog. Green pepper relish and tomatoes, yum! Sometimes, I still sneak the slaw on my Chicago Hot Dog :)!

Looks like no one knows of a good dog in ATLANTA. Not Woodstock, not Marietta, not Sndy Spring, not Ellenwood. ATLANTA. If they wanted to know about the best dogs in Georgia, then you out of towners, OTPers can chime in. But for now, leave it to the pros.
Well, the city has been lacking good dogs since the demise of the Ham Dog from Mulligans in Oakhurst. The Ham Dog was a hot dog wrapped by a beef patty that’s deep fried, covered with chili, cheese and onions, served on a hoagie bun AND topped with a fried egg and two fistfuls of fries. Like the Varsity or some crappy mustard and pickle “Chicago” dog could beat that. Alas, Mulligans closed because all their customers died (they also searved a bacon cheeseburger on a Krispy Kreeme doughnut).
Best dog in Atlanta? East Atlanta Yacht Club in L5P. They serve a deed fried, all beef burger with all the toppings you want (although the emphesis here is placed on the dog itself) including Brunswick stew. Have one before a show at the Variety and you’ll have to leave early to take the Browns to the Super Bowl.
Runner’s up for best dog include the Brewhouse Cafe (Jumbo Black Angus Chili Cheese Dog), Ann’s Snack Bar (it’s actually a deep fried “split” served on a hamburger bun) and Turner Field(how could an honest Atlantan leave this one off their list).

ATL- Nice try. The blog asks about the best hot dog in METRO Atlanta. Marietta, Woodstock, Sandy Springs, Ellenwood, Lawrenceville.. all of them are in metropolitan Atlanta.
And, for what it’s worth, Skip’s in Avondale Estates IS inside the perimeter. Who cares if it’s OTP or ITP anyway? Get in your car and drive.

The chili dog at Brandi’s World Famous Hot Dogs is incredible. Very spicy chili. I love a good chili dog too, but I don’t get Chicago Delights (if you are referring to the one on Barrett Pkwy) - the dogs are too tough, even my non-discriminating hotdog loving kid won’t touch them.

Some of the Best Hot Dogs in Atlanta are at Hot Dogs Etc. on N. Shallowford Rd just outside the perimeter!
They have about 15 different dogs made with Hebrew Nationals! From the Southern (Slaw Dog) to the Kansas City (Kraut and swiss) to the cajun (with red beans and rice on top!)They even have a Reuben dog! (with pastrami on the dog!… sounds awful but tastes awesome!)
They need to be added to your rotation! Great Cajun food and Xydeco music as well!

I was in Smyrna on South Cobb Drive the other day and stopped in at the old Dairy Queen. It was clean and inviting and had a nostalgic feel. I had a chilidog and it was unbelievably delicious! The bun was toasted on the outside and soft and warm inside. The hotdog was all beef and had great flavor. The chili had just the right amount of spice and heat to it. I ordered another chilidog with slaw, it was almost heavenly! The slaw was cool and delicious and tempered the heat of the chili perfectly. I hope they all start making chilidogs like this Dairy Queen. I will make it a point to stop there again soon.
