Where’s the best place to go for brunch or breakfast?

Is it the spinach-stuffed omelet? The bitter-sweet coffee? The just-right easy-over eggs? Or, maybe, the artery-jamming doughnuts? We want to know: What do you consider the finest breakfast/brunch place in the area?

J. Christopher’s is always a winner for me. Consistently good food & service. Usually very crowded. Other great options are Thumbs Up Diner & The Flying Biscuit.

Sweet Melissa’s in downtown Decatur has an awesome shrimp omelet. The pancakes are excellent too.

I cant’ believe that sweet mellissa’s and the flying buscuit have braiwashed two more people to think they have good food. If you think the biscuits at the Flying buscuit are good , then you must be a yankee. Atkins Park has the best brunch on Sundays. The best grits in Atlanta, crab cake bennidict(sp) and shrimp and grits. If you want a little cheaper try the brew house. Limited selection but great queash(sp). If you want an old school greasy breakfast, try Mammy’s Kitchen on Memorial Drive. Some of you white hipster liberal yankees that live in Decatur and Midtown might not like this place because mostly black folks frequent it, even though you claim to be open minded. Delicious Bacon egg and cheese biscuit. These are real buscuits, not flying buscuits.

uptown breakfst in roswell is great. they serve all the traditional faves; c** fried chicken/steak, country ham, omlettes and a country benedict which is a viscuit topped with sausage an egg cheese and gravy. i want to go now!

Thumbs Up, hands down. The one off Boulevard. I’m still not to impressed with the one in College Park.

J. Christophers

Silver Skillet on 14th street.

And I may be tarred and feathered for this, but I LIKE Cracker Barrel, for breakfast. That hashbrown casserole, with some catfish, those biscuits with honey….that’s good stuff :)

I hate to give all of my secret spots away, because some of them do not offer very long waits…even for weekend brunch, but I will anyway.

I have to agree with the crowd…Thumbs Up has the most amazing breakfast in Atlanta, but you must go early if you want to avoid a wait. I’m talkin before 9am.

Also, Radial (on Dekalb) and Ria’s Bluebird (on Memorial) are 2 of my favorites. Try the Huevos at Ria’s and the Salmon Scramble or one of the specials at Radial.

Sounds like I don’t get out enough. I usually cook breakfast on the weekends. trizbubbles, sounds like you’re the one that’s not open minded. It’s a well known fact that a place doesn’t have to look great to have great food..

By Bill Sirinek

I don’t typically eat breakfast food. Seriously. I’d much rather have a burger or a sandwich in the morning than eat eggs, grits, hash browns, waffles, etc. IHOP and Waffle House are more than happy to cater to my non-breakfast-food-eating self.

However, there’s one exception I make for breakfast food:

The Original Pancake House

There’s at least 3-4 in the metro area, but they’ve just built one way up in Alpharetta and wow… soooo good! Thick-sliced bacon and the richest pancakes you’ll ever taste.

J. Christopher isn’t bad either, but not nearly the breakfast bliss.

I get really tired of these folks who totally ignore those of us out in the hinterlands who don’t want to drive miles and miles for some good food. Surely there’s decent food to be had in other places than Atlanta, Buckhead and Decatur!!!

For greasy spoon type fare, it’s got to be the Majestic.

If I want a more upscale atmosphere and food, I’ll take Murphy’s

I will never recover from the loss of Highland Bagel though……I was addicted to their Firepot cream cheese.

By BPJ

April 18, 2007 11:28 AM | Link to this

Alon’s or Murphy’s (great waffles)in Virginia-Highland would be my choices.

I invite Dee in Loganville and others in the “hinterlands,” to add their favorite breakfast places to the list - it is always nice to learn about new places. Most people, when they go out to breakfast, tend to go near home; therefore those of us who live intown tend to list places nearby. This should not discourage anyone else from listing their favorites, wherever on the map they might be.

OK, I’ve lived OTP (near Mall of GA) and now I live ITP (Candler Park). So, I’ll try to give my 2 cents.

OTP for breakfast…there was a little biscuit diner near the Lawrenceville courthouse…can’t remember the name. Otherwise you have to go to a chain. The best biscuits in the world, no matter where you are, come from Popeyes…

ITP…depends on what you want. If you’re looking for gourmet healthy but not too healthy then The Flying Biscuit is a fine choice. I agree that their biscuits are not all that. But their menu items are very good. I really like their home fries.

If you want a good greasy spoon then Gato Bizco across the street is great. Less of a wait than the Biscuit, too.

Of course, the Krispy Kreme on Ponce is fun to take kids, too, even though they can’t compare to Kellers or Meche’s Donut King (both in Lafayette, LA).

Eagle’s Landing on River Road in Lawrenceville does a fabulous cajun buffet brunch on the weekends. French toast, homemade (yes, HOMEMADE) sausage, Louisiana style coffee, very reasonably priced. Amazing beignets too! Even the service is great.

Joan, are you from Cajunland? I am from near NOLA and my husband is Cajun. I usually get my mom or mom-in-law to bring me sausage…

Is Eagle’s Landing on River Road the name? I never see roads named River around here. But I lived a mile from River Rd in Lutcher, LA. River here would be the Old Man.

The Waffle House is hard to beat. Some of them are dirty but you can see that right away and leave. I’ve seen restaurants with spotless dining rooms and the kitchen so nasty you wouldn’t allow your dog to eat there.I like to be able to see my food being prepared so I’m partial to Waffle House.

Alpharetta people, how about Brooklyn Bagel on Old Milton? I’m from South Florida (which has more New Yorkers than New York) and let me tell you their bagels & lox are the real thing!! Don’t expect your coffee to stay hot though, better to get a to go bag.

J. Christopher’s is okay.

The AlphaSoda is also great, if you don’t mind a line.

By far, Thumbs Up is the greatest. I’m willing to wait in line, in the rain, for a long period of time to eat there. I also like this place called Bennie and Joon’s or something like that. Thumbs Up is in my neighborhood so it’s convenient. Being a Yankee whose folks are from the south, I know a little about sourthern cooking and when it comes to breakfast Thumbs Up does it just right…hands down!!!

jrzjavagirl, I think you are referring to Bobby and June’s on the corner of 14th and State St. I like to walk up there on Saturday mornings for an egg n cheese sammich (with butter AND mayo — I’m bad) then hit Energy Coffee next door for a final cup of joe to take with me on the walk

But really they had me first with their meat-and-three-veg style lunches. It doesn’t even matter what the special is; believe me it’s all good.

call me crazy, but the “best breakfast” in my neighborhood is in my kitchen. the morning after I whip up some Italian sausage an peppers, I make an awesome frittata with the leftovers. add a little Kona coffee, some juice and who needs to dine out? if there are no leftovers, I go to Ria’s or Dakota Blue (weekends only).

On the southside….Broadway Diner on 138 in Stockbridge. They make their own breads, so the French toast is to die for, and the waffles with strawberries and cream are also great. This is to “Its Me” from Chamblee. Have you tried the Skillet in the Chamblee Shopping Center … 2 eggs, sausage AND bacon, biscuits and gravy or grits … $5.49. Not a bad price but I got tired of it … to greasy. I agree that right now Popeyes has the best biscuits, but only because the Hardies are fading out … they use to have the best. For me the best breakfast I’ve got hooked on is the Ole Hickory House … try their beef BBQ omlet, with their biscuits and gravy and whatever meats you crave … the beef BBQ omlet is outta site.

Another must try is JR’s Log House which is an awesome BBQ place but it has a wonderful stick to the ribs breakfast. There is one on 141 and one in Doraville on the PIB access road. If you live out in Snellville, Lawrenceville, or Loganville you should defintley go to the Red Barn ( also might be little red barn). They are only open for breakfast and lunch and only M-Sat. They have the biggest and best biscuits ever. Get there early b/c they stop serving breakfast by 10 and a very long line forms at the drive-through and inside by around 8:30ish. Their biscuits are awesome though and they have tons of different types of biscuits. The red barn is right in downtown Lawrenceville. Ya’ll should hit it up.
