Remembering Rich’s Bakeshop
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Now that we’ve revealed the recipe for Rich’s coconut cake, we were wondering whether Atlantans are still pining for other treats from the late, lamented department store bakery. Do you miss anything from the Rich’s bakeshop? Do you have special memories of the bakery (which closed more than two decades ago) that you’d like to share? Were Rich’s baked goods really all that great, or this is this just a case of absence making the heart grow fonder? Also, are there any local dishes or food products that you would mourn and crave if a particular restaurant or bakery closed — in other words, what might be the Rich’s coconut cake of tomorrow?

I have always wanted their recipe for that fire carrot cake. Does anyone have it. My mom used to buy them everytime we would go downtown to Rich’s. They were the best.

I have a picture of my mother standing in the kitchen in the 70’s getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner, with a Rich’s green & white cake box on the counter behind her. We liked to get half of a German chocolate cake, and half of a coconut cake. The ladies would put the cake halves together in the box and tie it up with string.

My family holds mouth-watering memories of treats from Rich’s Bakery. The coconut cake was probably our number 1 favorite, closely followed by the Japanese fruit cake. If anyone has this recipe, please post it for me. The other treat that I remember fondly is the fruit-bar cookies. No Christmas dinner would have been complete without the Coconut Cake and the Japanese Fruit Cake from Rich’s Bakery. Long live these fond memories.

Every Christmas Eve my Grandmother would buy a chocolate and coconut cake from the Rich’s Bakery. My Family loved shopping at Rich’s. I sure do miss those days!

Rich’s brownies were the best I have ever tasted! And the “elephant ears” were yummy, too. I was recently reminded of their small, round mints while on a visit to California. I found something almost identical in a local deli. Seeing them brought back memories of something gone but not forgotten.

I have wonderful memories of Atlanta baby showers where the hostess served Rich’s gooey/buttery petits fours. And during power shopping trips, my mother and I would stop by the bakery for a few cheese straws and a wedding cookie (or two).

I worked for Richway in the Richs building downtown for 7 years. I would sneak up to the “employee bakery” where birthday cakes that were ordered and not picked up would be sold for $1 to employees…ahhhh… Those were the best cakes EVER! Bless those lame people that didn’t pick up their cakes!

It was a big treat for Mother and I to drive to the Downtown Rich’s (before there were any others that I know of) for shopping. She was smart enough to wait to go through the bakery until we were on our way to the car. I have absolutely no recollection of what she bought but she always got me one of those big chunks of white chocolate. With my mouth full of that, I couldn’t really squawk about having to sit in the back seat (pre-seat-belt days!).

Do I remember the Rich’s Bakery! It was the first thing I looked forward to when going downtown with my mother. We were just having this conversation on last week about those good on cupcakes, brownies and donuts. They were freshly baked and delicious. There has not been a bakery to come close to the southern flavor of Rich’s. Let’s not talk about birthday cakes!

does anyone remember roxy’s deli in the tenth street area? I wish I could have a plate of their spaghetti or at least the recipe - my tech husband and I would have a splurge night occasionally and feast on spaghetti, salad, bread and coffee for $1.00 each - maybe that included the tip!

When I was growing up in Tucker, our BIG Saturday trip was to go downtown to Rich’s and the Candy Kettle next door. We could only afford the broken stick candy at the Candy Kettle but who cared? We always go a Lemon Cheese Cake from Rich’s Bakery. I never figured out why it was called that because it wasn’t what we consider a cheesecake. It was white cake with a lemon filling and topped with lemon filling. Then the sides were iced with white icing! We only go to get the bar size instead of the whole cake but it was our favorite!! Does anybody have a recipe? I have tried several but none come up to the memory.

Rich’s Bake Shop was my last stop always! after a day of shopping at the Rich’s Downtown Store (the ultimate in shopping at the time)! I lived in Athens then and always took home coconut cake and lemon cheese cake! I used to say when I died I wanted to go to Rich’s bakery and fabric departments! My favorite places in the store. Now they’re “gone with the wind.”

I remember a version of Rich’s coconut cake that had the “lemon cheese” filling - my absolute favorite. What we old southerners call “lemon cheese” is actually lemon curd - a traditional British dessert topping made from egg yolks, butter, sugar, and fresh lemon juice and peel. Not really hard to make, and soooooo delicious! I also remember the peanut butter & jelly sandwiches made on pastel-colored bread that were sold in the little cafe on the bridge at the downtown store. I loved Rich’s and still miss them!

We would go to the beach every summer. Before we left Atlanta, my mother would get several boxes of the “Elephant Ears” and we would have that with our peaches every morning for breakfast - I have never found a pastry so light, flakey and flavorful since the bakery went out of business - nothing compares!

Yes, I thought I was the only person in the world that remembered Japanese Fruitcake. If anyone has the Recipe for that and the Lemon Cheese Cake (which I dont think had any cheese in it at all) Please send.

WE loved the elephant ears too!! Especially w/ strawberries. Rich’s bakery was the McLatchie circle favorite. We’ll never have the pink pig like the one in Rich’s.

If anyone else out there has any more of the Rich’s receipes, please post! I remember their yellow cake with chocolate icing. If memory serves me correct, the cake had maybe three or four small layers. The icing was cooked, not the instant type you find on cakes now!

To Sherry:
If you look in the recipe collection, there is a recipe for a boiled chocolate (fudge) icing. It is very good. Use the yellow cake recipe for the Rich’s coconut cake and the cooked icing and add a cold glass of milk, and you will be on your way to yesteryear!! Enjoy.

Recalling all of my memories and reading other’s memories about Rich’s bake shop makes me so homesick for it! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a “Rich’s Cookbook” with all the wonderful Rich’s recipes from the Magnolia Room and Bake Shop.

I remember those awesome brownies! My mother loved them. My sister and I were also in the cookie club, where we got a free cookie each month! That was the best!
