Best new places to put some South in your mouth
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We still love Atlanta institutions like Thelma’s and the Colonnade for Southern classics, but there’s a newer breed of Southern restaurants that are showcasing the flavors of the region in some ways that might catch Grandma off guard — as in JCT Kitchen’s chicken and dumplings, in which the chicken is cooked in red wine and the dumplings are actually Italian gnocchi.
Then there’s the catfish at Wisteria that’s served over green tomato and eggplant with crawfish ragout, and the Harlem Bar’s Banana Pudding cocktail served in a martini glass.
We welcome these new offerings when they’re done right, and after months of artery-clogging research we share the best Southern-inspired discoveries we’ve tasted, served by both the old guard and the new.
What restaurants and chefs do you think are doing the best job of cooking Southern food these days?

Emma’s Kitchen on Hembree Road in Roswell It is a little hole in the wall in a small strip shopping center, but Emma makes great lasagna, ribs, fried chicken and real good side casseroles and veggies, all for a good price.

One of the best places for Southern cooking in Atlanta would have to be The Southern Skillet in Roswell on Alpharetta Highway. Great food at a very reasonable price and some of the best sweet tea in all of Atlanta.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of Georgia. I would like to extend my apology to the citizens of the state for the commitments that I have made towards their lack of support concerning the unsolved death of my wife, Mrs. Gina B. Lynch, and the illegal removal and adoption of my children, Darnell, Ashley, and Brittany by the Department of Family and Children Services. Everyone knows that Family Services has a great record concerning the protection of children. Even though I’m not at fault in the disappearance or death of my wife whom anyone knows how she died. I have not seen my babies in over six years. I also would like to say that I’m sorry to have gotten on so many of your nerves in posting my tragedy and injustice in the blogs of crime and punishment seeking too expose the truth concerning the mistreatment that not only I but others have experienced at the hands of law enforcement and our public officials whom we’ve voted to protect our liberties. I believed if I was to write a book concerning my nightmare and introduce official evidence and documents, which would prove my claims it would be enough in given support in correcting a grave in justice, but I was wrong. If anyone can assist me in making my family whole please visit my website @ www.kllundypublishingllc.com and e-mail me with your proposal.

The best southern style cooking in Atlanta has to be Luella’s. Everything you might try is among the absolute best you would’ve tried, e.g. fried or baked chicken and fish, mac’n’cheese, collards, peach cobbler, etc. And, they add some Louisiana favorites like red beans and rice, gumbo, and the best bread pudding I’ve ever had. It’s in an older neighborhood in SW Atlanta, but they’ve really done a great job of making it probably one of the nicer environments in which to enjoy southern style cooking. Do yourself a favor: www.luellastogo.com or 404 349 0662.

I just never understood going to a restaurant that has close to home cooking. When I go to a restaurant I go for non-homecooked food. There are fund raising barbeques held by local organizations all over the south that are hard to beat.

Mary Macs is still open ,I believe it’s run by Asians now, but the food was great the last time I was there.Only those who speak of soda and not Coke would believe that a chef could prepare southern food properly, they may do well enough to fool the other transplants, but not a true southerner.Mathews cafeteria in Tucker is as good as you’ll find, food fit for a true southern gentleman.Thomases buffet in the old depot in Covington is good. The best place I’ve found is the Green Tomato off Hwy 92 in Woodstock. It’s in the Kroger shopping center next to the dollar store. They have the most amazing meats, veggies, desserts, and salad bar. Plus, you cannot beat the prices. I eat there once a week with my entire family and have yet to be disappointed.

When did it become acceptable to call canned vegetables and frozen, bagged and fried vegetables “home-style, southern cooking”? That’s not cooking! That’s heating and serving!
I realize I may be a purist, but Southern, home-style, cooking should be fresh meat, bread and vegetables.

Granny’s done gone on now, and there’s not any place that holds a candle to her down-home cookin’ (God rest her soul). However, “Southern Style” off Hwy 20 & “Family Tradition” off Towne Lake Pkwy are pretty good. In a pinch, I don’t mind Cracker Barrel once in a while either. ;-)

Everyone can have their favorites and most of the places listed I have not tried so I can’t put them down(I was not impressed with Mary Mac’s though). But if I’m not going home for a homecooked Sunday dinner, then I’m just as happy at the Blue Willow in Social Circle.
It’s not Southern Cookin’ but I also love Frank’s off I85 south of Union City.
As to By Me, I have found lots of good eating in SC, but in all my trips through NC and Virginia I’ll just eat at Cracker Barrel because I haven’t found any good local resturants and the one recommended haven’t been anything worth bragging on. I would welcome recommendations somewhere off I95 in NC or Virginia or near Williamsburg since that is my normal route.

I haven’t seen it listed, but I wasn’t overly impressed with the Green Manor in Union City either. It was okay, but it was no Blue Willow. I wish I could remember the name, but if you are ever in Statesboro there is a great Suothern restuarant on the main drag through town in an old house that had vegetables taste as though they were picked that morning on the farm.

While not in Atlanta, Snooky’s in Statesboro, along with the place mentioned by G354ME (Uncle Shug’s Fried Chicken, known to locals simply as Shug’s) are darn good. I was NOT impressed at all with Mary Mac’s. I have yet to try John Boy’s Home Cooking in Snellvile. My father, born and raised in Tuscaloosa, AL (and who grew up with great Southern cooking) wasn’t too impressed with Journey’s End in Loganville. Just as it is with BBQ, the best Southern food seems to be found in the worst-looking places.

The “best” southern cooking can be found at the Longstreet Cafe in Gainesville, Ga. If you have not had the pleasure of being there, then it is time that you try it. Their fried chicken is great; the catfish and hush puppies (served on Friday)are outstanding; the fried okra is like fresh! The corn bread is wonderful as well as the big “cathead” biscuits. They have a large selection of vegetables and meats every day.

Thelmas is the best…hands down. Fried Chicken, Mac & Cheese, Black Eyed Peas; it’s an institution that deserves attention, but good luck finding a place to park. I agree with kuntrylvr about Buckner’s. Great food, all you can eat, great sweet tea. Also in Jackson is Fresh Air BBQ, probably some of the best BBQ and brunswick stew I’ve ever eaten (Fresh Air also in Macon, GA). Every time I go to Macon, I make sure to get some Fresh Air BBQ and stew to take home for dinner. Another good home-cooking place is in Milledgeville, called Country Buffet. You won’t find it without directions from a local. Best country-fried steak/gravy and baked chicken ever. Good greens and peas, too. Fresh-squeezee lemonade to drink and excellent sweet tea.

Wish I could remember the name, it’s a little, mostly take-out place in Grant Park, Chef something? The food is excellent & homestyle (‘cept for the mashed potatoes, sorry!) & I just love the proprietress, she is a trip & the sweetest lady! Now that I’ve moved more north, Bob’s Homestyle Country Buffet on Roswell Rd. Again, instant mashed potatoes (ugh) but everything else is to die for & the prices are great. Very friendly staff too. Try it Fridays & Saturdays for the fried chicken livers, yum! But if I say so myself, you’ll find some good eatin’ in my own kitchen. Not to brag, but my baked chicken, sweet potato casserole & homemade mac & cheese are heavenly if I do say so myself,& me a Jewish girl originally from up North, yet!

Carver’s on Marietta Street (on the left beyond King Plow when traveling from downtown) is absolutely unsurpassed for quality and quantity. Very respectable runner-up designations go to Matthew’s in Tucker, Doug’s in Emerson aka Lower Cartersville, Lunch on Main in College Park, Blue Willow in Social Circle, and Dillard House in Dillard. A posthumous designation is awarded to Thomas Restaurant at the State Farmer’s Market in Jonesboro which closed last year.

The Blue Willow is good. Just make reservations because the wait can be long.
I didn’t care for The Colonnade’s food. I gave it a shot twice.
I didn’t care for Mary Mac’s. I gave it a shot three times several years ago.
Downtown Atlanta’s Pascal’s was good back in the day.
I agree that the best Southern cooking can be found in the rinky dink mom and pops. Long-time, take-your-time, traditional cooks that fix the food as if they’re in their own home.
I’m sorry, Asian community, your take on Southern cooking is NOT authentic! Southern cooking is not about fast food, low-cost ingredients to make food stretch. There’s much more to Southern cooking than that!

Gumbeaux’s in Douglasville is fantastic! I always have to go when I’m in Georgia for some Tiger Stadium Tailgate “Dip” and Bourbon Street Crawfish Dip plus they serve Community Coffee and if you’re from southeast Louisiana, you know that’s the only good kind! I want to correct an article in the AJC online about a restaurant called Just Loaf’n that gives New Orleans credit for Community Coffee. Baton Rouge is the true origin! (and we sell sno balls at seasonal sno ball stands, not as dessert offerings in restaurants…lol) When I lived in the Carroll/Haralson County area, I really did miss those sno ball stands. There’s nothing like a spearmint sno ball on a hot summer day!
